Thought we'd chosen a name that's easy to spell... apparently not!

I'm stunned that so many people are struggling with dd2's name. She is called Heidi and people have tried Hydie and Hidi so far and she's only 12weeks old. I thought it was a classic (although not hugely popular right now) name.

We get Harriett, Hariott and Hariette. It's only bloody Harriet fgs not rocket science!

Waspie · 30/11/2011 18:29

Heidi is my name. I absolutely hate it, I always have and I always will. It's either spelt incorrectly (most recently: "Hydy" - I mean - huh?) or people feel the urge to tell you all aboutsome other Heidi they met in 1984 on holiday in Corfu as if you must know then because you have the same first name.

Unfortunately I didn't even get a decent middle name to use instead. So, at university, I let myself be given a nickname which has stuck. I can't use it on formal documents but at least it's something.

Sorry, I realise I sound bitter but it's because I really hate my name. I'm not bitter about anything else in life Smile

We have a Harriet... or Hariot/Harriette/Hariet. It's disappointing because I was certain we'd chosen a name that was easy to spell (my own name being one that people invariably spell incorrectly).

DD is Phoebe

We've had

Pheobe
Phobe
Phebe

Very frustrating !! My name is is Siobhán and I would be here all day telling you the different spelling I've had - and the different pronunciations when people read it !!!Angry

FairyArmadillo · 02/12/2011 00:31

DS has a very common name. One of my friends kept spelling it Ythan (Ethan).

proudfoot · 02/12/2011 16:32

Heidi is a name with clear and easy spelling so I am also surprised people are messing it up!

Hmm at the person above claiming "ei" in German is prn aay... No, it is certainly not!

PrincessScrumpy · 02/12/2011 17:21

well waspie I hope dd isn't so upset about her name as you are - dh and I spent a lot of time choosing it. Oh well some children are just ungrateful I guess - hope mine aren't.

I have an Imogen and nursery workers often spell it Imogin but maybe that's just them. I would have thought Heidi is quite obvious to spell, congratulations, lovely name

TeWiharaMeriKirihimete · 02/12/2011 17:45

I think loads of people just can't spell!

I have one of the most popular girl's names of my generation and yet it is still regularly spelt wrong. Hmm.

DDs (very classic and traditional) name also gets some very odd 'alternate' spellings.

lljkk · 02/12/2011 17:51

You try Isabel.
"The name" of her generation, and it turns out there are at least 4 very common ways to spell it (one of which, Isobel, I never heard of until DD was like 3months old).
You should have spelt it Jighdee, OP. Wink

SuckItAndSee · 02/12/2011 17:54

I thought the spelling of dd1's name was well-known
we once got an invitation (from a grown-up) to Feebee

HoldTouchEngage · 03/12/2011 15:27

We love Heid and it could be a choice for us if we ever were blessed with another dd.

We already have a Georgia and the variants of the spelling for that have been somewhat surprising too! Xmas Hmm

HoldTouchEngage · 03/12/2011 15:28

Ha and then i go and type it incorrectly in a rush...... Heidi Blush

mumatron · 03/12/2011 15:30

I am amazed at the amount of people that struggle to pronounce/spell Eliza correctly Xmas Confused

Even my mum calls her Elijah Xmas Shock what the chuff is that about?

PrincessScrumpy · 03/12/2011 21:52

Kitty

We have Heidi Matilda and Kitty Alice.

Kitty is a family name and we keep meeting people with dds called Kitty since we had her - not met any Heidi's yet! Grin
