Yes, no, maybe, only in fantasies?

Was watching a film last night with this in and thought it has a lovely sound.

If you're happy for him to be mocked, then yes, fine. And before anybody states it won't happen - of course it will. Parents judge as well. So many people nowadays seem to want to show how 'clever', 'wacky' or 'inventive' they are. All it shows is a lack of forethought for what the poor child will have to go through.

CupOfGoodCheer · 27/11/2011 16:48

Nooooooo

Et in Arcadia ego.

Has the world gone mad? What happened to the lovely normal names?

PercyFilth · 26/11/2011 12:23

You could have Cajun as a nickname.

But no. This is not a serious suggestion. Just no.

nooka · 26/11/2011 07:17

It's a perfectly nice sounding word but it's not a name. www.thefreedictionary.com/Arcadian

Personally I find it difficult to understand why so many people want to call their children random words rather than real names. I have a very unusual name (never met another) but it is recognisably a name. I can't imagine it would be very easy to have a name where the frequent reaction is going to be confusion, but given the strange array of names in use now perhaps that's not an issue anymore.

Montsti · 26/11/2011 07:08

I know loads of Alexanders, Sebastians and Matthews too! Personally I don't have a problem with popular names if I love the names, but a lot of other people do which is fair enough. I have never heard of the name Arcadian but to be honest I much prefer it to many of the other names that come up on this board!

mathanxiety · 25/11/2011 23:00

I also know a ton of Alexanders and Alexs, but there's a happy medium between Alex and Arcadian.

Lots of nature names are bound to be unusual (Heath, Sage), lots of ancient saints' names (Dunstone, Wulfric), and there are names that were popular in the 50s to the 70s (Ray, Roy, Leroy, Malcolm, Derek, Simon, Colin) that are still not cool again.

Camerondiazepam · 25/11/2011 22:49

Any name starting with Ar risks sounding like Our. As in Our Kadyen. He'll end up spelling and / or explaining his name all his life. I would consider something a bit more mainstream (but I like really dull classic names for boys so just my opinion).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/11/2011 22:43

Oh gosh sorry but this is the worst name suggestion I have ever heard - and there have been plenty of bonkers ones on here. Sorry but is terrible....really, truly dreadful.

rosebery · 25/11/2011 22:41

What about artavia instead. Kinda sounds tthe same (sort of ish!) :)

PoppadumPreach · 25/11/2011 22:41

the fact you were even considering calling a child Arcadian says a lot to me.

but i really don't want to make this personal

it's just that so many people on here want to give their poor unborn child a ridiculous, pompous/pretentious and "original" name.

i'm afraid your name suggestion was just the straw on the camel's back as far as i'm concerned.

Fishpond · 25/11/2011 22:20

Alexander? I know tons of Alexanders.

I also just said I liked the sound of the name as I saw it in a film last night, not that I was 100% set on it. Opinions are perfectly fine and welcome but attacking a personal preference to give a child a unique name is OTT, and FWIW I wouldn't think doing so would give me a more clever or intelligent child. Hmm

fishpond there are less extreme ways of making sure your child isn't 1 of 5 in a class with the same name...

Matthew
David
Peter
Robert
Sebastian
Flavian
Antonio
Caspar
Alexander

bethelbeth · 25/11/2011 22:14

Arcadia is the name of Philip Green's clothes shop empire. They'd probably end up nicknamed TopShop or DottyPee.

Think again methinks.x

Fishpond · 25/11/2011 22:11

Poppadum - wow. Fair enough to say you don't like it, but saying for fucks sake to parents who don't want their child to be 1 of 5 in a class with the same name? Really? Hmm

NewsClippings · 25/11/2011 19:46

Another no, sorry

PoppadumPreach · 25/11/2011 19:41

FFS what is it with people wanting "unique" names - it's not going to make your child any more intelligent/famous/amazing

think of the child, not yourself

MakkaPakkasWilly · 25/11/2011 19:39

We have an Arcadia shopping centre here, makes me think of that

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 25/11/2011 19:29

It's a shopping centre. It would be like calling your child 'Westfield' or 'Merry Hill'.

SoupDragon · 25/11/2011 19:08

No. Just no.

first1 · 25/11/2011 19:06

Err no. Just no. Sorry!

BrigitBigKnickers · 25/11/2011 18:56

Sounds like a Computer game- his future teachers will make Hmm this face when they see his name on a register and think you are a crazy parent to be avoided at all costs!

cece · 25/11/2011 18:35

Sorry to busy rolling about on the floor laughing. God no it's awful...

Cinquefoil · 25/11/2011 18:34

Nooooooo! Please don't.

MitrochondrialEve · 25/11/2011 18:32

Nope - sorry!

It does sound nice, but look here

There will be similar sounding names in the baby name sites. Aurelian springs to mind - but depending on people's accents that one can sound like 'Our Alien'...
