Is Eve really that popular?

SacreLao · 21/11/2011 05:30

We love the name Evelyn for or new little one who we have recently found out is a girl.

I keep reading on here that eve and evie are really popular but is it a regional thing?

I live on the outskirts of a rather rough area and have never heard anyone with eve or any variants. None in the local school either (was quizzing teachers on friday) although they have 12 jades apparantly in a small primary school.

Everyone that I have mentioned eve or evelyn to, family, friends, neighbours etc. have ask said it is unusual and no one has said my neice, aunt, cousin etc. is called that. Well except an elderly neighbour who told me it was her grand mothers name.

Is it possible that eve just isn't that popular in my area or will I be seeing them every where next year.

I adore the name but being one of 6 rebeccas when I was in school has put me of popular names. Perhaps there is a nickname for evelyn that isn't eve and I've not thought of it.

Please excuse spelling by the way, typing on phone and can't quite get the hang of this swype keyboard.

Lots in our area-generally known as Evie. However-does it matter?

nicknamenotinuse · 22/11/2011 18:59

I know lots.

pinkgirlythoughts · 22/11/2011 18:56

I wouldn't pay too much attention to whether friends and relatives think it's unusual, to be honest. You wouldn't believe how many people told me that Ava was really unusual when I was considering it earlier this year, and that they'd never heard of one.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 22/11/2011 01:25

Whether it's popular or not in your particular region is irrelevant, really.

For one, you or your child may well move away/around as the years go by.

Plus, I'm sure there were areas in the 70s/80s that had very few Claires or Joannes or Karens. But overall they're still names you very much associate with that era.

So while there may be pockets with a higher or lower proliferation of Eve/Evies, because it is very popular overall I think it will still date and if that is a concern for you (it isn't for everyone), then maybe back to the drawing board.

I think Evelyn is lovely. I would go with that although I really like Eve too. I only know 2 Eves and they are both 10. I don't know any Evelyns. I too regard Evie as a different, stand alone name, which is far more common.

workshy · 22/11/2011 00:03

south leeds

only know one eve and one evie

MelinaM · 21/11/2011 23:59

Yes, I know of two little Eve's and three little Evie's!

DaveyStott · 21/11/2011 21:23

Evelyn is a lovely name, but I would say that as my DD is Evelyn (pronounced Eve-Lyn). We chose it because it's a family name, but also because we liked it so much.
Her name does get shortened to Evie, which I'm not so keen on, but we also call her Eve.
Evie is quite popular round here (Midlands), but I don't know any other Eve's nor Evelyn's. All the HV's we've met have commented on how unusual Evelyn is.

choppychopster · 21/11/2011 21:16

Meant to add, we didn't realise how popular the name was 5 years ago and possibly wouldn't have chosen it had we known. It suits Dd though - she's quite girly, sociable and talkative (we didn't have a hiddeous pink pushchair though)

choppychopster · 21/11/2011 21:08

It's very popular here (fairly nice area of Manchester). Dd is one of two Evie's in her reception class. In fact, out of the class of 31, they have the only duplicate name. Dd also went to nursery with an Eve and an Eva.

dearheart · 21/11/2011 20:08

I would pronounce your name Ev-Lyn too. I haven't met another one (though know various Eves and Evies and Avas). Evvie might be a nn, or Lynnie. If you love it I would go for it.

Eve · 21/11/2011 18:44

I'm 40 a little older than 21, come across only another couple of Eve's in my life.

winterland · 21/11/2011 18:41

Its probably the most popular name up here (borders) at the moment. In nursery and P1/2 I know of 5 Eves and Evas.

RedHotPokers · 21/11/2011 18:33

Eva, Ava and Evie are quite common where I live, but hardly any Eves.

I love it and know of a few baby Eve/Evas. But love it anyway.

MrsJohnDeere · 21/11/2011 18:03

Eve, Evie, Eva, and similar names (Edie, Ava) very popular here (Herts)

PattySimcox · 21/11/2011 17:58

Midlands Evie very popular but don't know any Eves

angelinterceptor · 21/11/2011 13:52

Yes, its really popular in NI too - know lots of little Eves and Evies, most are under the age of 10 though

MamaLazarou · 21/11/2011 13:50

I know two Evas, three Eves and three Evies, all under five. I live in Kent.

2tired2bewitty · 21/11/2011 13:21

I have an Evelyn, known mostly as Evie, though the CM does call her Eve. I guess she can choose which abbreviation (if any) she would like as she gets older, as I have done with my own name.

In terms of popularity, I work in a firm of about 100 people, between us we have four daughters called Evie/Evelyn, three of whom have the same middle name! We are in London/South East.

Memoo · 21/11/2011 13:16

I have an Eve and haven't met another yet. Even in all my years of being a teaching assistant I never came across an Eve.

BeattieBow · 21/11/2011 13:12

it is in my area. I was in a playground at the weekend and there were several eves/evies there.

mayanna123 · 21/11/2011 12:59

To get an exact number have a look at the regional ONS statistics - they will show you how often all the variants of Evie (Eve, Eva, Evelyn etc) have been used over the past few year, regionally split.

That will be more helpful than asking a random bunch of us - who may or may not happen to know any of these Evies.

Catsycat · 21/11/2011 09:19

Evelyn is a lovely name, and I don't know any round here, or any Eves. There are, however, lots of Evies and Evas (pronounced Ava and Eva). I think some names can tend to be regional. We live near Evesham, so I guess there might be a subliminal thing going on with the town name too!!!!
