Would these scream LOTR / Harry Potter to you? Can any of them be considered nice even with the connotations? Am aware some of them have been around way before either book, so just curious of opinions or whether you could add any to the list really :)

Disclaimer: Most of these names I would not use in real life Smile Would be interesting to know if you would actually use any of them.

That's good to hear bronze! :)

bronze · 17/11/2011 19:02

I know a 5 year old Theodin (or is it dan) Theo anyway, his dad is a major LOTR fan

ImpYCelyn · 17/11/2011 18:59

DH has vetoed Lorien after pointing out that it sounds exactly the same as his name, minus the initial F.

ImpYCelyn · 17/11/2011 17:45

Lorien is gorgeous LaTristesse. I might see if I can get it past DH...

twogirls1more · 17/11/2011 17:02

Yay I'mjustabloke!! Liking your thinking! Grin

LaTristesse · 17/11/2011 15:31

DS has Lorien as a mn, it's gorge; wish I'd saved it as expecting again now!

ImJustABloke · 17/11/2011 15:24

ImJustABloke but ... If I had a son I'd suugest Theoden (nn Theo), I think it's a great strong name (Lord of the Rings related)

minipie · 17/11/2011 15:20

I like Peregrine, Lucius and Blaise.

A lot of the others are either too odd or too obviously associated with LOTR or Harry Potter.

Cormac is a perfectly normal name!

Actually I really like Peregrine

twogirls1more · 17/11/2011 06:16

Also, not everyone on the entire planet has even seen LOTR or HP..(I was a LOTR virgin til fairly recently! :)) Anyway, as I think I said before, what's the big problem with the LOTR/HP connection??!! ALL names have association with things/people and will, for whatever reason, conjure up negative associations for some people! (I hate the name Zac but only really cos I was involved with a v abusive man of this name!) Angry

Fishpond · 17/11/2011 02:20

See, I disagree - I think most of the boy names wouldn't immediately tick a 'LOTR / HP' bell for most people.

i.e.

Cadmus
Emeric
Beaumont
Yardley
Luthien
Ori
Daeron
Cormac
Blaise
Caradoc

These are all very minor / passing characters, not the main ones.

Of course they would scream LOTR/HP because nearly ALL of the names feature. Having said that if you like these names I see no problem.

AlmaMartyr · 16/11/2011 17:34

I've PMed you Fishpond since her name does out me a bit.

Grin at Custardo.

twogirls1more · 16/11/2011 15:35

I think someone's trying to be facetious fishpond! Think they prob have a John & a Sarah?!

Fishpond · 16/11/2011 14:45

Alma I'm dying to know what she's called now?!
And custardo Grin

Rohan
Meriadoc
Sirius
Lucius
Aberforth
Godric
Cadmus

Ori

Beaumont
Caradoc
Samwise
Theoden
Cormac

Arwen
Ginevra
Est
Luna

Rosmerta
Hermione

I wouldn't use all of them but I think those are acceptable.
I really like Sirius, Lucius, Aberforth, Godric, Emeric, Remus, Caradoc, Arwen, Ginerva, Est, Hestia, Belatrix, Rosmerta and Hermione. I think the latter would be the most closely associated with HP along with Sirius and Remus (twins!), whilst Arwen and Samwise would be a LOTR ones.

You could just use Harry or Ron, you know Wink

Tortington · 16/11/2011 07:58

fuck, i can't believe its only just occured to me that i could have called the twins merry and pippin

AlmaMartyr · 16/11/2011 07:56

My DD has one of those names and we love it (obviously!) No-one recognises it from the book as such but everyone seems to know it and know how it's spelt. I love these sorts of names!

twogirls1more · 16/11/2011 07:21

Awww, thanx imp, will do! He's being stubborn atm and after 4 long wks of false alarms, has now decided to be officially late! grrr... :(

ImpYCelyn · 15/11/2011 21:28

Oh yay! Come on Theodin!

When we first planned names for DS I argued long and hard for names from The Silmarilion, Laurelin was the only one that wasn't vetoed.

Can't have Laurelin anymore, as it turns out that DS1's name is the hero of a French sci-fi comic, and his partner is Laureline - I don't want people to think we've done it deliberately.

I may have wangled Arwen as a middle name if DC2 is a girl. I'm in competition with Édith.

Good luck! Let us know when Theodin arrives :)

twogirls1more · 15/11/2011 21:13

Couldn't agree more imp! Grin Let me be one of the first to take the plunge! (Thinkin may be in early labour so may be sooner than you think!) :)

ImpYCelyn · 15/11/2011 19:59

Ah, there are some nice names in that too...

Fantasy books have great names in general, I think. We all just need to toughen up and start using them :o

Nightstar · 15/11/2011 19:45

You forgot Lorian

Nightstar · 15/11/2011 19:42

Rohan
Meriadoc
Peregrin / Pippin
Antioc
Luthien
Emeric
Blaise
Beaumont
Theoden
Cormac

Arwen
Ginevra
Elladora
Este
Celestina
Luna
Lavender
Vana
Eowyn
Hestia
Rosmerta
Andromeda
Hermione

These are the names I think you can use that dont sound stupid. Some are really beautiful names!

Very keen on Arwen, Theoden, Peregrine and Vana. Hadnt thought of Rosmerta before, its quite nice isnt it

Fishpond · 15/11/2011 19:13

Imp No, it's from A Song of Ice and Fire. Not quite as lengthy as WoT!!

OP posts:
twogirls1more · 15/11/2011 17:27

Names will always come with a different association for different people. Whenever I've looked up Theo on names websites people go on about Theo Walcott! Neither DH or I are into football and to us it's just as silly as assuming you've named your child David after David Cameron or Jack after Jack Nicholson?!!
