Got a girl name all picked out but really, really struggling with boys. There are 0 names I absolutely love, 0 names I really like, just a list of names I kind of like. Need help :(

My only criteria is outside top 100, pref outside top 500 - and I'm in America so the most popular vary wildly from the UK.

Here is my list of "meh I guess if push came to shove I would pick one of these out of a hat" - comments welcome and suggestions HUGELY appreciated. I suppose I like literary inspired names and some nature names.

Silas
Beckett
River
Julian
Jude
Theo (number 700-odd in US popularity!)
August (tacky if born in July? Or indeed August?)
Sawyer
Quinn
Jett
Beau
Toby
Sage

Henry, Quinn and Julian are lovely. Also like suggestion of Marcus, or how about Quentin or Tristan?

lisianthus · 17/11/2011 07:33

I love Julian and Quinn. How about Marcus or Julius if you want to go a bit Roman?

MitziKinsky · 16/11/2011 20:33

Max?

Fishpond · 16/11/2011 20:09

I love Noah it would be my number 1, but it's number 5 on popularity list here so it's a no go for me.

CheerfulYank, Jim Bob is cute, isn't it? Confused

I've heard Otis is not looked on favorably in the US, like the UK.

Castor? Confused

OP, Toby and Jude are good names. Especially Jude.

Or Noah?

Not a fan of Heath, sadly. It reminds me too much of the candy bar and I would be constantly asked if I called him after Heath Ledger (Americans assume any unusual celeb name = must have been named after said celeb)

ShoutyHamster · 15/11/2011 11:47

Heath, call him HEATH.

A most fabulous, strong, interesting name which is naturey AND literary (kinda).

Tis beautiful.

BlueChampagne · 14/11/2011 16:06

Conrad

halecromp · 14/11/2011 15:11

I like Theo, Quinn, Toby and Henry. How about Tobias or Eddison? xxx

tammytoby · 14/11/2011 13:28

I like Beckett, August/Augustus, Quinn and Henry.

I'm least keen on River and Sage.

comedaygoday · 14/11/2011 12:38

Silas: lovely, great name.
Beckett: no, don't like.
River: pretentious, don't like.
Julian: ok
Theo: good, but Theodore better.
August: sorry think it's awful.
Sawyer: don't like.
Quinn: no, please no.
Jett: hideous.
Beau: not good.
Toby; fine, quite nice.
Sage: no, not a name, a herb.
Henry: good, strong and.classic.

bigbluebump · 14/11/2011 11:20

Love Silas, Quinn and Toby.

I too find Sonny a bit 'nicknamey', like Buddy. I don't know any real life Sonny's but I've seen the name liked by some on other threads here.

JeanLouiseFinch · 13/11/2011 16:08

I really like the name Silas. It makes me think of Silas Marner.

None of the others would make my shortlist though.

CheerfulYank · 13/11/2011 15:53

Do people really name their boys Sonny? Confused Here it's a joke redneck name, like Cletus or Jim Bob.

melliebobs · 13/11/2011 14:29

Me and DH LOVE Silas but have since gone off it when he was the nutter serial killer in Hollyoaks! I really like Beau to

mopsyflopsy · 13/11/2011 11:37

I like Quinn, Toby and Jude (although the latter is a little feminine perhaps and close to Judy).

Thumbwitch · 13/11/2011 11:34

Silas - not keen
Beckett - not keen
River - fine if you like hippyish names (I do)
Julian - like it
Jude - fine
Theo (number 700-odd in US popularity!) (really??) one of my favourites
August (tacky if born in July? Or indeed August?) I see this as more of a girl's name, tbh. Augustus maybe?
Sawyer - no
Quinn - love this - have a friend who has a son called this
Jett - no
Beau - s'ok
Toby - like this
Sage - bit unisex, would waver on whether it was boy or girl if I saw it written down
Henry - one of my choices for DS (not the one we chose)

rachel1970 · 13/11/2011 11:31

I think you list is lovely. The ones I'd personally avoid are the mega popular ones (in the UK at least) including Theo and Harry/Henry.

I particularly love Jude, Quinn/Quentin, Julian/Jules and Sawyer.

celebmum · 13/11/2011 10:09

Like Jude, Theo, Jett & Toby lots!

Not so much Silas, too sinister! And defo no to QuinConfused

How about

Xavier
Troy
Maxwell
Jackson
Cassius (sp?)
Castor

JessieEssex · 13/11/2011 10:08

I think it's a fab list! I agree with you about boy's names - we were really stuck (and had a dd in the end) but both of our favourite names - Theo and Henry - are on your list! Also think Beckett and Sawyer are great names.

Fishpond · 13/11/2011 09:59

Awful? Really? Sad

OP posts:
MitziKinsky · 13/11/2011 09:35

Theo

Most of your choice are awful, sorry!

pilates · 13/11/2011 09:33

Only like Henry out of your list I'm afraid.

How about Jared, Sonny or Rory?

Towndon · 13/11/2011 09:25

I like Julian, Jude, Theo and Henry :)

mayanna123 · 13/11/2011 07:35

I think Quinn (I'd put Quentin on bc), Silas and Beckett are all really nice and not too widely used already. Henry seems very popular esp shortened to Harry.
