This is our 5th baby everytime we go through this and it drives me mad. Name after name rejected for no real reason but nothing else suggested so that in the end we end up going for something last minute that just sort of gets by us both.

I dont think he is being awkward on purpose but seriously how do other people deal with rejection of all the names known to man.

My DP says no to most names I suggest. But the other day he actually said 'what about Bella?'....I suggested it months ago and he turned his nose up at it!!!! Give me strength!

Lonnie · 24/11/2011 13:44

I like Hester

But if He likes names like this how about Frances Daphne Lillith Maud Elsa Elsie

MsChanandlerBong · 23/11/2011 12:16

OP I think you're right to ask for reasons as then you might be able to challenge some of them and start to have a discussion (which is more helpful than just him veto-ing everything!!)

We had a similar situation. DH only had one suggestion. I had about a hundred, which meant I didn't want to just go for his suggestion iyswim. In the end we had a shortlist of 3 names: my favourite, his suggestion, and one we both quite liked.

We went for the one we both quite liked, and last week (DD is now 11 weeks old) DH turned round and said "I love her name for xyz reasons" which is more of an opinion than he had the whole pregnancy!! I love the name too now btw.

Actually I like Hester

Towndon · 15/11/2011 22:34

Lose the H and you have a nice name - Esther. Or how about Estella?

LittleMissFlustered · 15/11/2011 22:12

Has he been reading/watching The Scarlet Letter recently? Hester is the main character in that.

I'm not sure about it. I think it has potential, it's just she's bound to be called Hez by classmates as she grows:(

ShesAStar · 15/11/2011 20:41

My DH does exactly this, he rejects every name and 'hates' nearly all names in general. What I do is draw up a list of all the names I am considering (usually quite long) and ask him to put a number between 1-5 next to the name (1 = hate, 5 = like/tolerate).

Then I focus on the names he doesn't hate. I find if DH hears a name enough he seems to like it more.

I'm really not keen on Hester.

Fishpond · 15/11/2011 19:21

Hester? Not a fan.

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 15/11/2011 16:32

Ok well dh has suggested a name:

ready..

Hester.

I cant decide if i hate it or love it!

I think if I'd got to number 5 with this sort of behaviour, I would have given up trying to involve him in choosing a name. Instead maybe you could go all cryptic about a 'secret list' and drop the odd teaser about moving something up or down the list to pique his interest. Otherwise it's an ultimatum: if you can't come up with some ideas, I'll choose!

Luckily for me DH was quite happy to play the name game.

poppydaisy · 15/11/2011 11:55

Do you know whether you're having a boy or girl? As it is your fifth baby, how about Quentin/Quinn, derived from the latin meaning fifth?

How about Annabel or Antonia, then you could shorten to Anna or Annie?

PootlePosyPumpkin · 14/11/2011 00:35

Should have mentioned that DH now loves DD's name and refuses to admit he ever said anything negative about it whatsoever Grin.

PootlePosyPumpkin · 14/11/2011 00:33

The only way my DD had a name was by me saying "how about this one?" at regular intervals throughout the pregnancy. It went (in his opinion) from being "snobby" through "too girly", then "not too bad" & finally "quite good". We managed to arrive at a (very) shortlist of two names this way & chose between them after she was born. Luckily, DD ended up with my favourite girl's name but many, many good names were discounted along the way for rather flaky reasons (i.e. I knew one at school, she was ugly Confused). By the way, DH's suggestions were Belinda & Julia - not my cup of tea I'm afraid Hmm.

mrsshears · 13/11/2011 19:29

welcome to my world Sad

Me and dh are not so much not on the same page as not even in the same library, some of my likes are

Pearl
Elizabeth
Primrose
Victoria
Romilly
Rupert
montgomery
ernest
stanley

And dh and vetoed all of these and suggested...... zoe! I mean fgs! >>runs of persued by parents of dd's called zoe

freerangeeggs · 13/11/2011 18:30

Sometimes they just don't understand what names are popular and what names are dated. Try showing him the top hundred baby names from last year and get him to circle all the ones he doesn't hate. You could do the same and then you could check for overlap.

Clandy · 12/11/2011 20:14

Argh I am in exactly the same position with my DP! It's so hard to keep making suggestions even names I don't like. For DD I just called bump her name and it grew on him but no clues for this one yet! The only suggestion he has so far cone up with is his own name for a boy!!

Watching for any advice!!! Smile

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 12/11/2011 17:04

Towndon I like the names on that this it actually includes both my name and two of my daughters names Grin I really like Lily dh doesnt like it because and i quote "its a flower and i dont like flowers". Psammead I will try more strongly to push for a reason although most of the time it just seems to be that he either knew someone at work with that name who he didnts like (I am starting to realise he may be slightly antisocial at work!) or that he thinks it sound too complicated, he has a better reaction to what i think of as 60s names like beverly although he still rejects them. I dont want a baby called beverly or Patricia either no offence to any here its just not my cup of tea!.

Reasons*

Psammead · 12/11/2011 16:57

I know the feeling very well. I have asked him to give asons now, even if it's something he considers silly, just to get on the right track. It's very annoying!

Towndon · 12/11/2011 16:56

How about...

Abigail (Abi)
Lily
Sophie
Lucy
Georgia
Katherine (Katie)
Emily
Maisie
Lydia
Bethany
Amelia (Millie)

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 12/11/2011 16:11

oh sorry i have done him an injustice - he does like one name Annie but our children all have red curly hair as do I it just seems cruel to call our little girl Annie...
