Our baby boy was born 3days ago. We named him Kade which is a Scottish name we've always liked. We live in Scotland and dad is Scottish.

MIL has made it clear she doesn't like it, thinks it sounds chavvy and said something like 'someone called Kade would never be a physics graduate and would be pre judged by teachers'

I know my hormones are currently crashing but I'm really really upset by this. It's made me feel awkward about his name and that people will all hate it. I think it's insensitive of her not to have kept her opinion to herself and now I know she feels that way I know she'll be cringing every time she has to say his name and I don't want that for him. I've always thought a lot of her so I guess it feels more hurtful. But again maybe I'm just being too hormonal.

Is it really a horrible chavvy name? To me your personality and upbringing puts your name into the context of who you are but maybe other people don't think like that. Any thoughts?

Tell her that before you met your DH you didn't think much of his name either, but you're not so narrowminded to have made a judgement about him as a person before getting to know him.

She had her go at naming her child/ren and now it's your turn.

People grow into their names and any arsehole you knew at school negative connotations are quickly forgotten

Although I'm Scottish and live in Scotland, it's not a name I've ever come across so I'm surprised to read that it's of Scottish origin (which after a quick google search I now know it to be!) as it doesn't 'sound' or look Scottish, iykwim?

What she said was just plain ill mannered - regardless of what she thinks of the she should have kept quiet about it. As long as you and your DH like it, that's what matters. Congratulations on your wee boy Smile

I love it..... Never heard it before.
How rude and insensitive your MIL is....

budgieshell · 04/11/2011 20:42

Stuff her, if you like it thats all that matters. Some people pass comment on everything, if you had picked Colin she would say it's boring. (this is when you tell me your DDad and DH are both called Colin, sorry in advance , but you get my point).

Kade doesn't sound chavvy.

Ignore her, she is being a cow. So what if she doesn't like it, so long as you and DH do.

and congratulations!

I think it is a lovely name. Unique, as I haven't heard it before. Make me think of a nice, strong, charming, good looking young man - which I'm sure he will grow up to be.

Congrats on the birth of your son.
