We've managed to come up with a shortlist of names for our new DD and would like to gauge opinion on how they are seen as I have not a clue! I have mentioned a couple of the names (Jasmine and Lily) to various people and there have been some mutterings about chaviness and/ or being overused:

Please shed some light on this by letting me know what you think about our list and your favourite. Thanks!

Beatrice
Jasmine
Lily
Millie
Molly

Jasmine if you're posh isn't chavvy. No names are chavvy if you're not. I knew an upper middle class Jason once.

(fwiw I hate the phrase chavvy, but I suppose it's no different to the Kevin and Tracy thing that used to go on in the 1980s. )

oh fgs just use the names if you like them!

I would say Beatrice is the one that is least used at the moment, but none are particularly uncommon. I like Beatrice the best!

Actually I would use Lily for my next child, but it is just too ubiquitous.

I think Jaz-min is a nicer pronounciation that Jaz-mean, too.

Beatrice is lovely.
Lily is too, but very popular.
Molly is sweet.
Millie sounds like a NN to my ears.
Jasmine... well, I like it sometimes, but in my accent it sounds horrendous.

Prunella79 · 03/11/2011 13:51

tbh they're all quite ubiquitous at the moment but Jasmine is certainly up there in the chav stakes

thousandDenier · 03/11/2011 13:44

what do you mean by 'chav' in this instance? If you can explain what it is you're trying to avoid that'd be helpful :)

Beamur · 03/11/2011 13:39

Beatrice is getting waaay too popular (she says trying to stem the tide against DD's name...)
There are quite a lot of Jasmines and Lily's around here, but still pretty names - I guess it depends on whether you want your childs name to be shared with classmates etc or not.
I wouldn't say any of the names on your list are 'chavvy' though.
