Our shortlist and it's 'chav' rating!

We've managed to come up with a shortlist of names for our new DD and would like to gauge opinion on how they are seen as I have not a clue! I have mentioned a couple of the names (Jasmine and Lily) to various people and there have been some mutterings about chaviness and/ or being overused:

Please shed some light on this by letting me know what you think about our list and your favourite. Thanks!

Beatrice
Jasmine
Lily
Millie
Molly

Thanks for your replies everyone. I didn't really think about whether our shortlist were 'chav' or not until I started talking to people about names ... and reading MN! I guess what I am getting at is what Jajas said:

They are not just names though are they? Like it or not we consciously or sub-consciously make up our minds about people based on lots of things but their name is most definitely one of those deciding factors.

It would seem, going by this, that Jasmin/ Lily seem to be perceived by some as 'chavvy' whereas Beatrice isn't. All are lovely names to me!

Any more opinions on our shortlist would be very much appreciated.

What do you think about Yasmin as a nice alternative to Jasmine? I love that name.

RitaMorgan · 04/11/2011 16:34

None of them are chavvy, all are very popular though.

Chavvy names are made-up/misspelled/hypenated.

What a bloody awful tread

phlossie · 04/11/2011 16:24

I have a Beatrice! I'm not a chav! (or least I don't think I am)

oohlaalaa · 04/11/2011 14:47

I love analysing names for how chavtastic they are, but don't really give a flying fuck, if they are chavvy, if that makes sense. I've seen mine and my brothers names described as chavvy on mumsnet, but still love the names.

Beatrice - Beautiful name. Not at all chavvy.
Jasmine - beautiful name, I don't think Jasmine is the least bit chavvy, but the nn Jaz, is very very very slightly, possibly chavvy.
Lily - lovely name, and in my humble opinion, not the least bit chavvy
Millie - I think Millie is nicest as a shortening for Amelia or Emilia. As a name on its own, it is ever so tiny bit chavvy - possibly.
Molly - definitely not chavvy. I LOVE the name Molly.

All nice names.

OrmIrian · 04/11/2011 14:42

Millie only on that list I'm afraid.

notso · 04/11/2011 14:41

I don't like Beatrice at all though it does have some lovely nicknames. It just makes me think of beetroot which I hate.

I'm not keen on Jasmine and dislike the nickname Jas.

Lily is really pretty but there are lots of them.

I like Millie also pretty, don't know that many.

I love Molly Wink It is popular but I only actually know five and three are in their 80's.

marylou242 · 04/11/2011 14:25

I think Millie and Molly are okay up to about age 7 or 8, but I don't think they would suit an older child, or teenager, or adult really.

I like Beatrice, Lily and Jasmine though

MelinaM · 03/11/2011 23:37

Beatrice is lovely, how about the less popular Beatrix too?

Lily, Molly and Jasmine I find rather tired I'm afraid ...Milly-Molly-Mandy springs to mind too Blush

proudfoot · 03/11/2011 23:03

I think Beatrice and Lily are the nicest, then Molly.

scarlettsmummy2 · 03/11/2011 23:03

lily is the only one I would really think of as being chavvy.

I like Beatrice best.

"I hate all the chavvy talk too. How can a name with no inherent attributes be chavvy"

I agree with you. The same applies to so called 'poncy' or 'posh' names imo - they are all just names, collections of letters.

It is up the individual to define his or her personality.

I'm not keen on any of the names, op, but not because of their 'chavness' or 'poshness', just because I have different taste to you. (thankfully we all have different tastes!).

Montsti · 03/11/2011 16:48

I like them all. Beatrice the most and Jasmine the least. I don't have a problem with widely used names but do think some of the girls names blend into one namely Lily, Tilly, Milly, Molly etc...I would definitely go for a lnger name, where possible if using these names too as they are cutesy in my opinion..

Btw don't think they're chavvy at all...

noddyholder · 03/11/2011 15:50

I hate all the chavvy talk too. How can a name with no inherent attributes be chavvy. Maybe the names are associated with that sort of person in some minds but it is ridiculous. As bb says choose a name you love that suits your child! I like all of those they are pretty

Redrubyblue · 03/11/2011 14:47

'There' not 'their'. Blush

whatkatiedidnext31 · 03/11/2011 14:46

I think they are all lovely TBH, I seriously thought about Jasmine when my daughter was born, but we settled on Mia instead, to be fair it really is about what YOU like, there will always be some people who have different feelings than you.
It is also better than being (IMO) one of these people that go a million miles the other way and choose a totally daft name for their child, Like Moonbeam or something...AND if thats your brothers/friend/other childs name then Im really sorry Wink

Redrubyblue · 03/11/2011 14:46

Dislike Millie. I find it a 'neither here nor their name'. What is it really short for? Millicent?

comedaygoday · 03/11/2011 14:41

None of them are "chav". Of them all, I prefer Beatrice. Lily is very pretty, but it is everywhere. I don't like Mollie or Milly because they sound too cuteish and nnish to me. Jasmine is ok.

Beatrice - the most traditional on your list
Jasmine - pretty, no idea if it's "chav" but I like it :)
Lily - pretty, fairly traditional I think
Millie - nice as nickname for Amelia/Millicent
Molly - don't like

Letchlady · 03/11/2011 14:20

I agree none of the names on your list are chavvy.

Beatrice - Nice, I really like this name and love the nickname Bea. Probably the poshest of your names.
Jasmine - Not my cup of tea, but nothing wrong with it.
Lily - yawn. Its okay I suppose, but there's nothing fab about it, and so many around that it has just become a really boring name. Like Sarah and Claire of our time.
Millie - Nice. I reallly like this name, but feel it would work best as a nickname for a more formal name - Camilla? Amelia? Emilia?
Molly - Okay. I'm not really into using 19th century working class / servants names. Not as nice as Molly imho.
