Hello all, this is my first post on MN, so please be gentle :)

I'd be happy to hear your comments on our list of names... Surname will be Taylor, so I think because that's quite normal, we can get away with a slightly more unique first name. But I'm worried baby brain has hijacked my senses and people will think we're mad with these:

-Woody (not sure we're really brave enough but I think is our fave, don't like Edward as the "full name")
-Barnaby (Current top contender if we ignore Woody)
-Felix (I like it, but not sure its very masculine)

Then I also love Spike, Rudy and Jett.

Phoebe
Betsy
Mabel
Polly
Martha
Kitty
Winnie

I could quite happily choose any of these girls names, find them so much easier than boys.

No idea where to start with middle names! I've never had one and it never bothered me, so considering leaving it out.

Barnaby or Spike and Mabel or Betsy

EdithWeston · 21/10/2011 09:01

Welcome to MN! This is usually a straightforward board - people might say they don't like a name (and why) but it's not usually rough at all. So I hope this will be helpful

My views:
Woody - definitely a nn to me: if you don't like Edward as BC version, how about a tree name, like Rowan?
Barnaby - lovely
Felix - lovely
Spike - don't like
Rudy - no because as an ex-Londoner this is far to gangsta
Jett - like

Phoebe - OK
Betsy - like (but would have a full form on BC)
Mabel - OK
Polly - like
Martha - like
Kitty - lovely (but would have a full form on BC)
Winnie - no so keen.

Felix for a boy, Phoebe for a girl :)

Woody - not keen as reminds me of Woody Allen. If you use it, go for Woodrow as full name. Woody is not short for Edward, which isn't pronounced Edwood.
Barnaby - OK, also Barney is fine as nickname
Felix - like, my favourite of your list
Spike - too spiky
Rudy - sounds like rude
Jett - too aeroplaney

Phoebe - like
Betsy - prim and frilly, but like Elisabeth
Mabel - OK, though a bit old-lady-faddy
Polly - don't like
Martha - OK
Kitty - dislike, cat's nickname
Winnie - not keen

ShowOfHands · 21/10/2011 09:06

I don't dislike any of them. Use Woody if you really love it. I know a Woody who is absolutely brilliant, he's just Woody, not a nickname. I also know an Elwood who is Woody to his friends.

Phoebe's a wee bit trendy/popular, as is Felix. Only slight negative to any of them.

babybumblebeee · 21/10/2011 09:40

Felix and Mabel I like very muchly.

ShroudOfHamsters · 21/10/2011 12:08

Barnaby or Felix, Polly or Mabel. Barnaby and Polly the best. Great choices!

Montsti · 21/10/2011 12:21

Felix and Kitty my favourites, but I wouldn't advise naming 2 children these names as a bit too "cat like" - he he...

Also like Polly and Barnaby.

Thanks all, I appreciate the feedback. I guess we'll have to see what s/he looks like and go from there. OH and I have always been indecisive, and baby brain has completely stolen my confidence in any decision-making - sod's law that we'll soon be needing to make really big ones (ie the name of our child) - it's scary stuff in a way!!

Have a good weekend!

Love Barnaby. Hate Felix and Woody, sorry.

Love Mabel and Martha and like Kitty as a nn.

manicinsomniac · 21/10/2011 22:18

Woody -I think it's cute. Not sure it works as a full name though.
Barnaby - Okay. Bit of a mouthful.
Felix - Lovely name. Not uncommon though if you're looking for unique
Spike - Sounds like a dog to me, sorry
Rudy don't like it at all
Jett - Unsure. Not very name-like somehow.

Phoebe - Quite nice
Betsy - Old fashioned Grannay
Mabel - Old fashioned Granny
Polly - Old fashioned Granny
Martha - Growing on me
Kitty - quite nice but think it's common - I have two in my class of 16
Winnie - Hate.

lurkinginthebackground · 22/10/2011 09:09

I like Phoebe best for a girl and Barnaby for a boy. If you like Woody then go for it but it is too out there for me.

nm123 · 25/10/2011 14:01

I think Barnaby is still winning. It's OH's fave.. Just hope if it's a boy he looks like a Barnaby after all this!

Girls, I could happily pick any of them, but have since gone off Kitty actually.

I love Felix and Phoebe. I don't like your other names. Woody is dreadful and Barnaby is almost as bad.
