OK, final name thread! One of us will be disappointed, who should it be?

We have two name choices. Neither one of us is happy about the other's choice. We have been through every name we can think of and, without a word of a lie, there is not one single name in the entire world that we agree on, believe me, we've tried and it's beginning to grind us down. We've just got totally different taste in names. So we've accepted that one of us will have to get used to a name we're not wild about.

Anyone else in the same position, what did you do? Is it possible to live with a name that's just ok and not The Name?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
HettyAmaretti · 20/10/2011 16:40

Julia is lovely.

Crumbletopping · 20/10/2011 16:35

Laura - rhymes with Flora but not so flowery or margariney.
Florence.

THere MUST be one name you can agree on!!! Is DD1 old enough to have a say? can you look back at family tree for inspiration?

exoticfruits · 20/10/2011 16:33

We had the same problem-you have to keep going until you agree-not settle for one. If you do settle for one you need someone who isn't involved to toss a coin.

WineAndPizza · 20/10/2011 16:29

Grin Lonnie

CobOnTheCorn · 20/10/2011 16:27

Ok this is a long shot but...I went for a walk to the local cemetary and I noticed lots of names that I either hadn't heard of or certainly not heard for a while.

How about going for a stroll with your dh just in case inspiration strikes.

startail · 20/10/2011 16:23

Verity or Amelia I could live with either, agree Maddie makes me sad even though I know a delightful one.

Lonnie · 20/10/2011 16:22

laughs Ive so got your dh's sense of name as I love Flora for a name and I dont mind Amelia ...

I think Cecily or Cecilia might work for both of you?

WineAndPizza · 20/10/2011 16:00

I love Verity. What about just 'Vee' as a nickname?

How about Cecily as a compromise? It's got a similar sound but I think it's more 'flowery'.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 15:45

I don't have a compromise name Whoever said upthread we were stubborn is spot on, only I'm more stubborn than him :o

I do toy with Julia every so often...
Honor is a family name (his), don't think he's that wild about it though. Like Connie, not keen on Constance. I could get him to agree on Amity and then suggest changing the 'Am' to 'Ver' at the last minute :o

Ho hum...

OP posts:
minipie · 20/10/2011 15:37

Ahhhh now I understand. Ok, we need a name like Verity but without of those kind of associations Smile

If Madeleine is his "compromise" name, then what is your "compromise" name?

What do you think of:
Liberty
Juliet
Amity
Serena
Constance
Honor
Romilly
Cecily
Jessamyn
Marianne
Jocelyn
Emily

evamummy · 20/10/2011 15:31

It doesn't matter what WE think.

What matters is that the OP and her dh find a name THEY can live with. If not love, then at least like. There must be a name out there, honestly!

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 20/10/2011 15:28

Oops. Not Felicity then.

Maddison

Kennedy

Georgia

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 15:25

Oh God no. Felicity is the real reason he hates Verity, it's apparently a certain type of name and it winds him up (despite his background being that certain type of person IYSWIM). It's taken me 6 months to free Verity from Felicity associations.

OP posts:
HettyAmaretti · 20/10/2011 15:22

I love Verity.

Is Felicity not exactly half way between Madeline and Verity?

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 15:21

Oh don't. Every so often he says ok then, Verity and I have a happy little 15 minutes composing my FB announcement in my head. Then reality butts in and reminds me it wouldn't be fair on him. I hate having a conscience!

OP posts:
NotnOtter · 20/10/2011 15:18

Verity - i know an amazing 20 year old darling one
Go for it - done!!

benandhollyandgaston · 20/10/2011 15:18

My kids have soppy names Grin

As a middle ground what about something like phoebe?

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 15:16

I did host a debate on here about Madeleine when he first suggested it and it was about 50/50 on the sadness scale. I've heard it too often recently to have any other association with it now except hassle!

OP posts:
minipie · 20/10/2011 15:16

I love the name Madeleine and I don't find it frilly or girly (I too don't like frilly girly names). I find it quite strong and decisive sounding, unlike Flora/Amelia. I think it's the hard "Mad" sound and the consonant sound at the end that make it strong.

Does that help? Probably not Grin

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 15:14

I'll try selling Ferret to him but I'm not sure it'll help!

Problem is, I know that if I push it he'll agree to Verity because he says I'm doing all the work. I want to say ok then :o but I'm too decent a person really. So I'll end up giving in because I'm always the one that does, with everyone and everything

Fatshionista · 20/10/2011 15:14

My cousin is a Verity and called Ver, to rhyme with Bear.

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 20/10/2011 15:14

LOL at every single name Grin

Flora is a margarine.

Amelia is nice.

Madeleine I used to like until Maddie went missing - now it's too much of a sad name for me.

Verity I don't like, I find it too harsh. The only one I have ever known was a right little madam as well (but I didn't like the name before she sullied it!!).

What other names do you like?

AncientsOfMuMu · 20/10/2011 15:11

The only Verity I know is always called Ferret Grin

Not much help, I know.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 15:04

No Lonnie. No no no :o. MN is supposed to be on my side, he can go to blokesnet or something for his support!

He likes Flora, Amelia, soppy names like that Wink but his name up for debate is Madeleine. I don't hate it, it's just not what I would choose.

I've lost haven't I?

Still incubating btw but I don't do patience! And we have been through every single name in the world, promise :)

Lonnie · 20/10/2011 14:59

ohh I am with your husband on this one I have always found Verity harsh and yes I can see where he gets battery from..
