We have two name choices. Neither one of us is happy about the other's choice. We have been through every name we can think of and, without a word of a lie, there is not one single name in the entire world that we agree on, believe me, we've tried and it's beginning to grind us down. We've just got totally different taste in names. So we've accepted that one of us will have to get used to a name we're not wild about.

Anyone else in the same position, what did you do? Is it possible to live with a name that's just ok and not The Name?

How about Josephine? A strong name for you & DH could call her Posy Smile.

Fishpants · 21/10/2011 00:08

If Verity is too battery-ish...Maybe...Clarity? Claire for short for him? I know it's not a common name choice but could be appropriate in this situation Grin

Fishpants · 21/10/2011 00:08

Agree that Verity doesn't bring up a lot of nicknames, but 'V' could work. Had a friend called Vanessa who went by V frequently.

Do either of you have other backups?

frutilla · 21/10/2011 00:07

Well, I went to school with a Veryann. It's similar to Verity but a bit more girly. Or you could go for other names in the same vein, Patience, Hope, Charity. Or put an Ann on the end Verity Ann....

Peppa and Dipdap?

So why not combine them - Pippa? Daphne? :)

Crumbletopping · 20/10/2011 23:59

Louise.

benandhollyandgaston · 20/10/2011 22:45

I know sisters called Harriet and naomi and Harriet and Livy (Olivia)

Thankyou!Grin It means 'strong' in Swahili and something else in Arabic. My name's Swahili too and means 'woman is strong', so our names match.

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 18:52

Oooh - Imara is beautiful

aswellasyou · 20/10/2011 18:45

Have you looked at names in other languages? Or really unusual names? I found my daughter's name 3 days before she was born and it was absolutely perfect, so there's always hope. It's Imara-on the very small off chance it's perfect for you too!

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 18:27

I've always liked

Marnie

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 18:26

Oh Dear

It will happen.

Dh and I thought we'd run out of ideas (actually, he vetoed all of mine). Then we found "the one"

How unusual would you go?

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 18:22

That's it, I officially give up. Julia was suggested before and he liked it. I've been thinking about it this afternoon and actually rather like the idea of it so suggested it just now. Got an out and out no.

Sod it, let him call her what he likes.

Julia is lovely

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 17:46

love Delyth, Cwtchbach

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 17:45

I'd put Verity and Madeleine in the same ball-park, FWIW

How about:

Serena
Esther
Cordelia
Margaret - Meg, Maggie, Peggy
Lana
Vanessa
Christina
Elodie

Cwtchbach · 20/10/2011 17:34

Ooh, also, what about a Welsh name, a few girls names sound very strong but have a lovely flowery meaning - could that be a compromise?

Angharad - intensifying love
Branwen - from the Mabinogion - Welsh folklore
Bronwen - blessed breast
Carys/ Cerys - Love
Delyth - Pretty

Cwtchbach · 20/10/2011 17:17

I'm just thinking of my family tree now to see if it throws anything up. Edith, Ethel, Lydia, Lavinia, Martha, Beryl, Olive, Vera, Evelyn, Rachel, Mable, Jennetta (think someone made that up!), Lizzie, Maria, Harriet

I realise that some of those are stinkers, just thinking 'aloud'

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 16:58

Just trying that nymbler. Ironically it's throwing up lots of names that were on our longshortlist.

OP posts:
minipie · 20/10/2011 16:52

Have you tried nymbler? Bit American but v useful if you have a few names that you think are ok-but-not-quite-right.

iggi999 · 20/10/2011 16:44

We couldn't agree either but we didn't know the sex, so we agreed I'd choose the name if it was a girl, him if it was a boy. I had a boy, and got to pick the middle name.
I still wouldn't have picked the name ds has myself, but within days it just became his name, iyswim. I wouldn't worry too much if your dh one of you has to compromise.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 16:42

DD1's contribution is Peppa and Dipdap, if that's any clue to her age and helpfulness... :o

Like Laura but one in the family already. I have thought about family tree. My aunt has done it back a couple of hundred years and if nothing is decided by the end of Nov when I see her then I'll get her to fire it up and have a plough through.

I swear there isn't one name we agree on :o We went through the top 5000 odd names a few weeks back and dismissed them all except our chosen ones
