OK, final name thread! One of us will be disappointed, who should it be?

We have two name choices. Neither one of us is happy about the other's choice. We have been through every name we can think of and, without a word of a lie, there is not one single name in the entire world that we agree on, believe me, we've tried and it's beginning to grind us down. We've just got totally different taste in names. So we've accepted that one of us will have to get used to a name we're not wild about.

Anyone else in the same position, what did you do? Is it possible to live with a name that's just ok and not The Name?

The only Verity[love it] I knew was shortened to Vera[which I hate]
I love Madeleine and have a dgd with that name.

BeeBread · 27/10/2011 17:21

Some persuasion of the Cornish variety

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 27/10/2011 15:07

Please don't bring Cornwall into it. I love Cornwall and all things Cornish too but I haven't got the energy to start again!

[hwink] Easy with the skipping now.

BeeBread · 27/10/2011 14:55

Susannah Verity Violet is lovely.

But I wanted to suggest Veryan which is one of my absolute favourite names. Softer than Verity but still unusual and a bit Cornish.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 27/10/2011 14:46

My absolute favourite period in history is the 18th century. I've just done a little skip of joy :)

Fabulous, and goes really well with Harriet, in a sort of 18th century way. Lovely.

ShroudOfHamsters · 27/10/2011 13:57

If he tries to do that, you simply don't engage. You just say 'No.' in a flat, toneless voice and go and do something else. As they say - no is a complete sentence!

oohlaalaa · 27/10/2011 13:35

Susannah is a fabulous name. Much prefer it to Madeleine and Verity.

AuntieMaggie · 27/10/2011 08:06

I love it :)

If he wakes up in the morning and says he's changed his mind you will read about his murder in the papers!

Hooray! Good name, definitely go for it.

JamieComeHome · 26/10/2011 22:57

Yes!! Susannah - no z's allowed

ShroudOfHamsters · 26/10/2011 22:16

NO it must be Susannah Grin

I think you have a winner!!!

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 26/10/2011 21:33

My suggestion, he agreed :) It was on the list earlier and, having laid to rest the names with the now stressy associations it suddenly seemed like a goer.

He's trying to change the spelling to Suzanna but he can whistle! :o

ShroudOfHamsters · 26/10/2011 21:25

His choice or yours ? Grin

I like, a good classic and very beautiful. Not keen on Sue as a short form at all, but Anna, Suzy and Zuza are all good short forms (know one who is Zuza!)

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 26/10/2011 20:21

Hold the front page, we may have a decision......

Susannah Verity Violet XXXXX

How's that? Please no one say horrible :o

Bubbaluv · 25/10/2011 11:39

What about Marisa (prn Mar-EE-sa).

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 25/10/2011 11:08

I didn't know you knew him Shouty :o That is exactly what he would do. Indeed, it's the reason we're mentioning Verity at this stage at all. When I first suggested it ages ago he said he hated it, then he said it had grown on him, I hadn't mentioned it since. Git.

As of this morning he's "thinking about Jennifer". I'm "thinking about kicking him in the knackers" and have told him so.

Yes, I think new list again will be on the cards this weekend.

Lovely isn't it. Melissa similar, though prefer Vanessa. OP, maybe it would be worth sitting down and saying, look, this isn't going to sort itself out, I have rejected Madeleine- we need to start over a bit.

Then present him with a new list, maybe including Genevieve plus a few that were rejected earlier that you really like (maybe Vanessa among them!)

Hand it to him and make it VERY clear that you have found the way he's flip-flopped around over Verity and Jennifer VERY upsetting and unnecessarily stressful given that you are pregnant. And that you find it even more upsetting that he seems to want to stealth bully you into a name you have said you're not keen on (ie Madeleine) - something you would never do to him.

Slam your new list on the table and say- Verity, Madeleine and Jennifer are OFF the lists. Look at this and please try and muster up enough maturity to give each name proper consideration.

Failing that, I would get over that guilt thing and insist (with tears and tantrums if necessary) on Verity. Do you know why? Because from what you've said so far, your DH sounds the kind of bloke who, in six months' time, will say with a smirk, 'Do you know, Verity's really grown on me now, I've no idea why I insisted on Madeleine...' And then you will divorce him.

My parents chose our names very methodically. They picked a name book (in their case the Oxford English book of Christian names circa some time ago...). They both went through it (not together) and crossed out all the names they didn't like. Then a list was compiled of all the names left. They they both (separately) picked the names out they liked from that list, ending up with a shortlist of names that they both liked, and our names were chosen from that. I am sure my father designed the system in order to avoid both conflict and (probably) conversations. A friend of mine did the same and they only ended up with one name they both liked, but my parents had quite a few (four different three name combinations for the four of us).

To me the names you like and the names your dh like are fairly similar so I think you really should be able to find something that you both really like, but it sounds as if you really need to take the heat out of the discussion.

NB my mother is called Clare because her mother hated nicknames. My grandfather fairly immediately called her Clarabella (latter Bella and BellaBee apparently :)).

mathanxiety · 25/10/2011 05:02

I love Vanessa too, and for all the reasons you state, ShroudofHamsters.
