'Hipster' names?

babybumblebeee · 14/10/2011 00:04

Having a chat with a friend today about what we consider to be hipster names.

Some names mentioned were Matilda, Florence, Esme, Felix, Leo, Finn, Oscar

What would you add to the list? I am particularly interested as these are the type of name I go for and am trying to work on a list!

Jermaine Byte.

Sorry, on my phone so not sure that link worked. V funny and worth a watch though if you copy and paste it

MargeryDaw · 14/10/2011 11:14

I agree OP that the names you've listed generally wouldn't be considered 'hipster'. Head into hipster land that is Dalston in east London and you're much more likely to meet a baby Eric or Maud.

Being a hipster isn't so great anyway: m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=GB%23/watch?v=lVmmYMwFj1I

My Mum and Granny are called Jeannie (not that unusual in Scotland), it was at the top of my list if i had a girl. DH had some hipster name choices for the boys, namely Dirk or Otto, but i vetoed them, somehow I feel it is better to give boys sensible names.

My London friends have a much higher quota of hipster names than my small town Scotland friends!

Utsera by itself maybe...

Or twins Utsera and Utsera

Or Nutsera and Sutsera

must stop now

Sorry, got a bit carried away there :o

ImpYCelyn · 14/10/2011 11:04

I desperately wanted to call DS Jason, I love it. DH said no :(

titchy · 14/10/2011 11:04

South Utsera anyone?

SheCutOffTheirTails · 14/10/2011 11:04

:o I think knowing the members of Sonic Youth and Spiritualized is about as unhip as can be.

bottlebank · 14/10/2011 10:57

Oh of course he is. I remembered his surname (Moore?), but clearly not what band he was in. I am tragically unhip Sad

I'd love to see Jason make a comeback.

SheCutOffTheirTails · 14/10/2011 10:56

Thurston is the guy from Sonic Youth.

The dude from Spiritualized is called Jason. Now that would be a good hipster name.

BuntyPenfold · 14/10/2011 10:54

Ooh, Faeroe is lovely.

ImpYCelyn · 14/10/2011 10:51

Love Fitzroy!

I also quite like Malin (meaning clever/cunning in French, to give it a bit of extra weight) and, the slightly altered, Faeroe (girl, natch).

It's a pity that Shannon and Bailey have been so overused :o

BuntyPenfold · 14/10/2011 10:51

Nine??

bottlebank · 14/10/2011 10:48

Hipster names at my kids' school - Thurston (named after the guy from Spiritualized I assume), Albie, Nine.

SheCutOffTheirTails · 14/10/2011 10:44

Top marks for Rockall :)

BuntyPenfold · 14/10/2011 10:44

And Fitzroy - great name.

Psammead · 14/10/2011 10:39

I would like to add Rockall to the list of awesome shipping forecast names.

SheCutOffTheirTails · 14/10/2011 10:38

Irish hipster children will be called Belmullet.

Which also contains the name of a favourite hipster haircut.

Double hip points.

Psammead · 14/10/2011 10:37

Cromarty is all kinds of awesome Grin

Why oh why has this name been overlooked until now? Shock

Arfurnoozingbrain · 14/10/2011 10:33

babybumble, you are taking this terribly seriously, aren't you? Grin

you mark my words. There will be a cluster of Cromartys when the so-hip-it-hurts brigade hit the Shipping Forecast.

thesurgeonsmate · 14/10/2011 10:25

em, now that babybumble has told us about nameberry, do we need MN? A richer seam of naming goodness I have never seen.

scarlettlips · 14/10/2011 10:21

Betty, Joan, Pearl, Bert, Jimmy and Bob!

SheCutOffTheirTails · 14/10/2011 10:17

If something is trendy, it's not acceptable to hipsters.

Matilda is trendy.

That list is the trendy names of yesterday, not the hipster names of tomorrow.

YY to 'Jean' - I love it in a poncey way, but sad old non-hip DH vetoed it.
