How is the name Guto perceived outside of Wales?

Dc3 is due any time now and I know that he is going to be a boy. I had no problems naming dd1 and dd2 but dh and I are completely stuck on boys names. Both of us like the name Guto (pronounced Geit-oh) and most local welshies are positive about it. However, a couple of relatives/friends who over the border really don't like it. I've known a couple of Guto's over the years and they have been rather cool, very gorgeous sporty blokes which has probably increased my preference of the name!

Anyway, would you say yey or nay?

Nothings happened to GB. OP was commenting how GH looks better than GB. I was worried for GB's wife should she stumble across this thread, she'd be upset to find that OP prefers Guto Harry to her husband!

((((hides in the 'sbensh' for making everyone confused))))

BelleEnd · 13/10/2011 08:27

I think I've come across you on here, lostinwales - Am I right in thinking you're in the south west? I am mid-Wales coast, but from north west originally- Quite weird going from somewhere that is a bubble of Welshness to somewhere where it's considered a quaint quirk... :(

I have also missed the Guto Bebb thing. What happened?

lostinwales · 12/10/2011 23:05

Love Gwenno.

What is happening with Guto Bebb

Cory no offence at all, and I could see your point perfectly, it just tickled me! It was a point well made especially as the boys were watching 'pointless' tonight (goodness only knows why but that's another thread) and there was a question on languages, DS1 was totally incredulous that hardly anyone would know that 'Bore da' would be a greeting in Welsh. We live in a Welsh language bubble here, but I pointed out to the Ds's that they speak the contestants language perfectly whilst they don't understand his. I imagine your Swedish names are beautiful (and unlike DS2 here they aren't one of three in their classes)

DigOfTheStump I have one of those and we spell it Gwilym although that's probably diffrent somewhere, Wyre is a great name too.

mejon · 12/10/2011 20:44

I've got a Gwenno too SenSationsMad (and a Mabli Smile).

I like Guto - just that little bit different and not too common. Go for it OP!

DigOfTheStump · 12/10/2011 20:18

What about Gwyllm (sp) or Wyre?

BelleEnd · 12/10/2011 19:43

My hormones must have been mental when I was pg with DC1. If he'd have been a girl, he'd have been Lloer. Bearing in mind I am a pale moon-faced girl, the teasing would have been terrible... Hmm :o

Esyllt is a great name. I loved Eirys too, but it doesn't suit our surname.

BestisWest · 12/10/2011 19:39

Mrs Bebb is called Esyllt according to wikipedia. Another gorgeous name.

SenSationsMad · 12/10/2011 19:39

Thank you! Though I would n't have gone with Gwenno if I had called DS Guto or we'd be forever singing " Guto benfelyn o Dyddyn y Celyn a Gwenno o Dyddyn y Gwynt......

BelleEnd · 12/10/2011 19:37

Aye. In fact, there was a Geini in that book. I've never heard that used in rl. Not keen myself, but it's different.

moondog · 12/10/2011 19:31

What a fine place to be stuck too!
Good old Kate.

BelleEnd · 12/10/2011 19:26

SenSations Gwenno is a wonderful name. One of the nicest EVER. It always makes me think of "pa bryd y deui eto i edrych am dy Wenno, pa bryd y deui eto wrth grwydro, Deio'r Glyn?" (Folk song.) I LOVE Deio too, for that matter :o

moondog · 12/10/2011 19:26

There is and she is a very nice woman. Grin

SenSationsMad · 12/10/2011 19:23

"Actually I was looking at a picture of Guto Bebb, Guto harri looks much better!"

I bet she loves him very much Grin (if there is a mrs Bebb)

Reesie · 12/10/2011 19:02

Guto is lovely, go for it. Love Gethin too (my dad's name) but agree it is getting very popular.
Just looked up the story of Guto Nydd Bran and realised in his case Guto was a diminutive of Griffith (another good name).

Reesie · 12/10/2011 18:57

Oooh! Lovely names lostinwales. Gwilym particularly (the other two have been taken up by close friends!). I'm going to go for it despite the 'Git' warnings from my more english speaking friends. I'm not bothered if it will be misspelt. The more I think about it the keener on the name I'm getting. DH is starting to be more worried but saying 'Oh a name like Guto Rhys "Surname", he surely would play rugby for Wales' - usually makes dh more agreeable!

What his happening to Guto Bebb's wife tonight? - I haven't seen the news.

Sorry, lostinwales, I read the OP carelessly and though the OP lived in England. My apologies Blush.

Since she lives in Wales (just re-read it) clearly it is not a foreign sounding name, any more than my ds' name would be foreign in Sweden. I take it back.

spiderlight · 12/10/2011 10:52

*well-before-that

spiderlight · 12/10/2011 10:52

Gwenllian is beautiful! I'm not a massive fan of Guto but I think Guto Harri has made it a bit more widely known outside Wales. I have a Rhidian (or, as he's commonly called, Rhidian-with-an-i-not-a-y-and-no-he's-not-named-after-the-X-Factor-bloke-he-was-born-well-that' Hmm He did get a rapturous welcome when we coincidentally wandered into X-Factor Rhydian's local pub once though!)

lostinwales · 12/10/2011 09:39

Sorry but at foreign sounding names! Welsh is not 'foreign', sorry cory I mean no offense, and I can almost see what you mean, it just tickled me! (although I do get offended and upset that my father still cannot pronounce his youngest grandsons name, it's not hard!)

cory · 12/10/2011 08:36

With these foreign sounding names I think there is one factor you need to make your mind up about first:

are you going to be the kind of family that gets terribly offended (=posts obsessively on Mumsnet) if the child's teachers/friends/future in-laws mispronounce the name or misspells it on their first birthday card?

or are you going to be able to take it in your stride?

both my dcs have difficult names but we get on with it and are tolerant of other people's efforts

HengshanRoad · 12/10/2011 04:37

Not super-keen...

BikeRunSki · 11/10/2011 15:22

Lost in Wales and Reecie -
Your DCs names are great,
I have Welsh nephews, Rhobert Emrys and Tomos Micael (sp????),
My favorite girls' names ever are Elin and Carys, but since I have v little connection with Wales don't feel justified using them.
