"Sunday name" for Billie?

We like Billie for a girl but what would her "Sunday" name be?

There is Wilhelmina or Wilma but can't say I'm too keen. Would Belinda work? Any ideas?

Isabel would be perfect. Billie is a perfectly reasonable shortening. I entirely agree with everything Theas18 said.

I like Eleanora as a Sunday name. That would be great for shouting :) Might give Bertha a swerve though...

Not a big enough My Bloody Valentine fan to have a Bilinda! Thanks for all the replies, even if we don't go for Billie/Willow maybe someone else will be inspired by the thread?

Lots of billies out there

Billie Pipers real name is Lianne
Billie Holidays real name is Eleanora (she took her name from Billie Dove an Actress)
Billie Doves real name was Bertha Bohny

Billie Whitelaw the actress this is her birth name with the middle name Honor.

I like it by itself but I would go for Belinda or Willa

Willa being the top or you could always spell it Billinda.

Gotta have a "sunday name" if you want to to name your child a nickname really. Billie isn't a bad "all rounder" as a name but if they end up in aserious profession they might want a more appropriate name eg

Posy as per the previous thread "Judge Posy Shufflebottom" is just rubbish but "judge Josephine Shufflebottom" might want to swap the shufflebottom by marrying appropriately but is otherwise fine!

You "define" your child if you aren't careful too little "gracie-Mai" is lovely for a ballet dancer but if you actually want to be a biker with a career in mechanical engineering you might rather your parents had at least called you "grace" so you can now be known at "gray" or similar.

oohlaalaa · 10/10/2011 12:35

Just google, Billie's name is Lianne.

shoobidoo · 10/10/2011 11:52

Sybille is lovely.

But I think Billie can be a standalone name like Lillie. If you like it, just use Billie.

twinklespeciallyforlittlegirls · 10/10/2011 11:23

Oh, I forgot about Billie Piper...I think that might be the end of the road for Billie then! We do have other names that we like.

re. Sunday names - I am up north and I am very old fashioned :)

Billie Piper is Liane apparently (sort of see that, if you focus on the Li!)

birdofthenorth · 10/10/2011 10:31

A Sunday name is a very traditional way to talk about full names up North. I'm with you OP. My DD has one... Perfect for being told off!!!

Belinda and Willow def best so far!

Can't think of anything else that's not daft... like Willoughby or Mabel (MayBill?!).

What's Billy Piper's real name?

whathappenedtom · 10/10/2011 09:37

A sunday name? Thats just daft. Hmm

thistlemuncher · 10/10/2011 08:54

Don't choose a name you don't like just because you think it matches the nickname. A nn doesn't have to have anything to do with the given name.

I would say it goes best with Wilhelmina, but I don't like it!

Bubbaluv · 10/10/2011 02:59

I know two Billies, both are Sybillas.

FairyArmadillo · 10/10/2011 01:08

I knew a Billie whose given name was Lilias.

bishboschone · 09/10/2011 19:41

My dd is willow ( don't care if that outs me ) is a beautiful name and different without being wacky .. She is nearly 8 and there are more around now but still love it . I thought she may be shortened to Billy but she isn't :(

twinklespeciallyforlittlegirls · 09/10/2011 17:10

Definitely going to put Willow on the list. I can't countenance Sybil, it will always be Fawlty to me (shows age)!

TheDinnerWitch · 09/10/2011 16:42

Ooh, I like 'Sybil', especially now because of Downton Abbey Smile

bishboschone · 09/10/2011 12:54

Willow

cece · 09/10/2011 12:23

Bobillina?

patindahat · 09/10/2011 12:20

Sybilla.

twinklespeciallyforlittlegirls · 09/10/2011 10:04

Billicent is amazing, I wouldn't do that do a baby but I would be very impressed if I met a Billicent! We used to have an insurance or something with "Boncaster" which always pleased me greatly.

Prisbilla?

Billian?

Embillie?

Willow is rather pretty - I do like Willa but it's a bit too much like willy for me (very juvenile mind I've got)!

A "Sunday" name is the one you use on formal occasions, e.g. job interview, appearing in court :) DC1 has a Sunday name so only fair that this one gets one too!

ShroudOfHamsters · 09/10/2011 09:49

Yes - Belinda, Wilhelmina, or Willow. I think I'd go for Belinda.

Billie is lovely!

BlueKangaroo22 · 09/10/2011 09:47

what on earth is a sunday name?

tryingtoleave · 09/10/2011 09:44

I like Willa - Willa Cather was quite an impressive woman.
