Anyone actually managed to pick an unusual name?

I'd really love my DC to have an unusual name and personally wouldn't like it if there ended up being 4 others in his/her class at school etc. I gathered together a list of names I like bit looking on here loads of other people like them too so I've clearly, subconsciously, picked up a penchant for fashionable names. So..I was wondering, did you pick an unusual name for your DC which is actually still unusual now they are at school? How did you do it and have you got any tips for avoiding the latest trends?

Tortoise there is no chance I'm having a girl as DP is one of 5 boys and there are 3 girls out of his 28 cousins. You've probably picked the girls name I'll never have Grin

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 06/10/2011 22:12

Grin yes, apart from "f" rather than "th"

But you should probably be made aware that I am basing this on the episode of The Vicar Of Dibley where she thinks Tristan (?) is proposing to her but it turns out he wants her to marry him and his fiancee Aoife Grin

I met a child called 'Freedom' and another called 'Winter' and one called 'Seriel'

I haven't got a clue what to call my yet to be born child, but I'd kind of like it to be fairly phonetic. I have an unusual name and have probably spelt a good proportion of my life spelling it. Think it is great though.

SausageSmuggler I met a woman with sons Dexter and Fletcher, if that helps?

Cupofbrownjoy My son is Tristan and older people always ask me if we have an Isolde.... considering that the classic couple were lovers, we do not have plans to use the name, but we do like it!

Both my children have very unusual names. In fact, I have never heard of anyone else with their names. If you google them with the "" round them, you get practically nothing. My youngest's name is an indian surname, but as a first name - nothing at all. My elder child, well, according to google, there are about 2 other people in the whole world with that name Grin

Although I hear it's chavvy to have an unusual name and I should have named both my sons John or something Grin

I will say though, that my older child is going through a bit of a patch re his name. He doesn't like it that nobody else has the same name. So prepare yourself for that Grin

My DD is another very old Scottish name, Cairistiona (cara-shteena).

I've never met another one, but she's still a baby so who knows.

Amanowl - I'm very glad to see someone who knows how to pronounce Aaron correctly! I have an Aaron (Air-on) and it really annoys me when people get it wrong. (Aran is lovely for a girl btw - would not have thought of that!)

Amanowl I used to know a little boy called Aaron, pronounced Aron, when we were living in the USA - but I think that Aaron would be pronounced more like Aron in an American accent anyway. So maybe it's an American influence?

Flamingredhead · 06/10/2011 20:41

Ds3 name is Irish and only the Irish can say it right to .Riordan English say readen arghh

Bollocks2u · 06/10/2011 20:35

I have two girls - Asha and Billie (after thefirstMrsDevere's beautiful girl - just fell in love with the name) Asha is the only one in the school, but Billie has two others at nursery.

Loving Erazmus!

SausageSmuggler · 06/10/2011 20:35

We have a Dexter which we love (obviously otherwise we wouldn't have chosen it). I wanted a name that was unusual but not so out there people would think it was weird. Admittedly most people ask if it's after the programme but we've only had compliments. Struggling to think of a name for DC2 that follows the same 'rules' and that goes with Dexter.

Thank you readyornot2011!

Helpfully ONS have totally changed their site since I last looked but I found this: You can get the complete lists of baby names for 2010 from this page

You have to open the Excel documents and then the various tabs/tables show you a huge amount of detail. The table at the end has every name in 2010 that 3 or more children were called.

You can see from those that Olivia (most popular girls name) was still only used approx 5,000 times, so there could still easily only be one in each class and none in some.

weasle · 06/10/2011 20:24

Amanowl
maybe the boys are called Arun? Common Asian name.

readyornot2011 · 06/10/2011 20:21

feb1970 here's the link but you need to download the excel file
