I want to call my baby Avocado

Not really.

Hear me out...

Okay, I like Persimmon (nn Persi) (which is still in the running) but everyone was horrified to the point where I have a seed of doubt sown in my mind.

So... my children have taken to calling the baby Avocado, and I was idly wondering if there was a nice Latin name for Avocado or an Avocado flower or something, and it turns out that the Avocado is of the genus Persea - do you reckon it's pronounced Percy or Persee-ay?

And, if you're feeling indulgent, can you think of anything else Avocado-y that might work? (But don't just be cutting and acerbic) (unless it's also funny).

I always think Alioli is a beautiful girls name, wins Guacamole hands down anyway.

tigercametotea · 23/09/2011 13:39

Avocado just doesn't have a feminine ring to it. It ends in an "o"... which is typical of Latin boy names. Why not have it end with an "a" as in "Avocada"? :D

thisisyesterday · 23/09/2011 13:32

there is also one called velvet-apple

velvet is a cool name

thisisyesterday · 23/09/2011 13:32

persimmon is also known as Sharon fruit....

schobe · 23/09/2011 13:21

You could start a new trend of modern names like Grace, Charity, Hope etc.

Persistence.

HerdOfTinyElephants · 23/09/2011 13:21

Persea I'd say per-SEE-uh or per-SAY-uh. I think I quite like it (for a girl).

Mind you, your baby won't be an avocado either. In fact, will have rather less in common with an avocado than with a Persian woman.

EdithWeston · 23/09/2011 13:18

I googled, and found there is an avocado.org which lists names of varieties. How about Gwen?

allhailtheaubergine · 23/09/2011 13:16

Noooo. Persephone is a beautiful sounding name but the connotations are too unpleasant.

Lol @ baby name black hole. I can't call it Jane or Susan! I do like those names but daughter 1 is called something ridiculous and I have to stick to the theme. I can't have them come to me in 20 years time and tell me Everything Is My Fault for calling one of them Rainbow-Flower and the other Maud.

Northey · 23/09/2011 13:16

So we can assume it will be an avocado, then? Wink

allhailtheaubergine · 23/09/2011 13:13

Persea pronounced Persee? I like that.

OP posts:
ShoutyHamster · 23/09/2011 13:12

Why not Persephone??

schobe · 23/09/2011 13:11

I'm loving this saga.

You're going to end up calling her Jane.

You'll have gone round full circle, then imploded and sort of become a baby name black hole.

Imnotaslimjim · 23/09/2011 13:09

I'm not very good with funny, but I did find this name pronouncer which pronounces it persee. Definitely prefer that to perseea/persaya

aliceliddell · 23/09/2011 13:08

dp suggests jerusalem & artichoke for twins, nn jerry and archie

allhailtheaubergine · 23/09/2011 13:08

Persis means 'Persian woman' which my baby won't be, so I don't think that works.

I keep x-posting.

Must try harder.

KnottyLocks · 23/09/2011 13:07

Erm, I'd steer clear of using 'avocado' itself though. It is derived from the native word for testicle.

So, if you go for it, I'd suggest using it for a boy Grin

allhailtheaubergine · 23/09/2011 13:06

Testicla for a girl presumably.

Oh arse. Does it really come from testicle?

OP posts:
EdithWeston · 23/09/2011 13:06

Testicle? Back to Plum, then?

JuneChollySawcutt · 23/09/2011 13:06

You will get many copies of this if you do stick with Avocado.

Just back from the farm shop where they are selling Quince, in season atm. Kind of cute. (If you want to stick to the fruit and veg theme.)

thisisyesterday · 23/09/2011 13:05

damn MP got there before me! lol

Northey · 23/09/2011 13:05

Or Eve Ocado.
