I want to call my baby Avocado

Not really.

Hear me out...

Okay, I like Persimmon (nn Persi) (which is still in the running) but everyone was horrified to the point where I have a seed of doubt sown in my mind.

So... my children have taken to calling the baby Avocado, and I was idly wondering if there was a nice Latin name for Avocado or an Avocado flower or something, and it turns out that the Avocado is of the genus Persea - do you reckon it's pronounced Percy or Persee-ay?

And, if you're feeling indulgent, can you think of anything else Avocado-y that might work? (But don't just be cutting and acerbic) (unless it's also funny).

We passed her in the street - her mum looked slightly Spanish/Brazilian etc so not sure if it could be a foreign name.

Honeydragon · 23/09/2011 20:07

Shouty you can just turn up, suggest Pingu and leave!

Are we doing both genders?

EdithWeston · 23/09/2011 20:03

Mango? Transferred surname, isn't it?

lollystix · 23/09/2011 20:01

Ds1 told me girl' in his class called mango. I didn't believe him thinking he'd heard it wrong but checked with another mum today and it's true. How odd? Poor girl.

frutilla · 23/09/2011 16:59

I like Persimmon, and Persephone. Percy is sweet for a girl. Also like my username, frutilla, pronounced "fruiteesha", the word for strawberry in latin america.

OTheHugeRaveningWolef · 23/09/2011 16:36

If you're thinking about the outside of the veg box, what about Abel or Cole?

allhailtheaubergine · 23/09/2011 16:24

Now that's thinking outside the (veg) box.

Marie Rose? After the sauce on the 70s prawn and avocado buffet dish?

allhailtheaubergine · 23/09/2011 16:01

Pear is a boys name.

ShoutyHamster · 23/09/2011 16:01

Penelope?

CailinDana · 23/09/2011 15:57

Why not just call her Percy, that's a great name and related to foodstuffs as in Percy Pig.
Otherwise why not call her Pear?

pixiestix · 23/09/2011 15:57

I would have thought it was per-say-uh.

ShoutyHamster · 23/09/2011 15:56

Sidge · 23/09/2011 15:43

DD3 and I were watching Blues Clues yesterday and I thought that Periwinkle was a FANTASTIC name.

I think you should use it.

Aworryingtrend · 23/09/2011 15:39

What about Persia, prenounced per-say-a?

Please do not name your child after a foodstuff.

CalatalieSisters · 23/09/2011 15:35

What about shortening to Ocado? (assuming of course that you had a home delivery.) Nice and aspirational.

allhailtheaubergine · 23/09/2011 15:31

Is Orchid testicular in etymology then? How strange when they look so much like fannies.

Vanilla. No.

OP posts:
EdithWeston · 23/09/2011 14:57

If you really want a testicular name, you could try Orchid?

Or if you must have an edible child, then Vanilla.
