Draco (yes, as in Malfoy)

So after months of wallowing in the shit-we-have-no-ideas abyss, DH announces yesterday that he has decided that Draco is the perfect name for our little'un. He is now set on it and to be honest I'm so tired of arguing that I'm quite willing to go with it. It is quite cool. Are we mental? Shall we just call him "boy" and be done with it? Where is the tomato puree? I just don't know anymore.

If you like a HP connection, what about Remus? A bit less in your face than Draco! Or Sirius? (and that really does have more of a constellation connection!).

But seriously, the HP thing will be brought up again and again, and the kid will be REALLY teased if you go with Draco.

Other possibilities;

Shakespearean ones (I know you said Oberon was too Shakespeare, but these are possibly less mainstream Shakespeare)
Arthur
Benedict
Duncan
Edmund
Feste (I like this one, v unusual, and seems in the same genre as Draco!)
Robin

Oberon and Joaquin are lovely. Oberon is king of the fairies however, so might be a stick to beat your LO with at school!!!!! I don't think Joaquin is too Spanish - depends how it flows with your last name. Draco has a nice sound, and certainly it isn't cruel IMO, but depends if you can live with the HP association, and if you really love it enough. My friend's Mum went with Shakespearean names for all 4 DC, her brothers are Benedict and Sebastian (I knew a Benedict at school and he was lovely :) ). I don't like Lucien or Emmanuel TBH. How about Gabriel - similarish to Emmanuel???

pictish · 20/09/2011 17:19

No. Don't be silly.

CannyFradock · 20/09/2011 17:18

Calatalie - I don't like Lucius precisely because of the HP connection! Actually I love names like Bartholomew and Horace but no one else does Sad

Now, now: if he likes the Malfoy association and you like Lucian, the answer is obvious. Name him after Malfoy's dad Lucius. He can't say "too Lucifer" when he doesn't mind the whole consorting with Voldie thing.

vess · 20/09/2011 15:07

I actually like it. It's a name, it's quite rare but without sounding odd. Short, easy to say and spell. Not outrageously pretentious - a bit try-hard, but not too much. Better than your other choices. Go for it.

Haven't read Harry Potter, though.

wellwisher · 20/09/2011 14:52

Like most of the creative flourishes in HP (not that I don't love those books), Draco is derivative but post-HP, that's its primary association.

How about Marco?

GooseyLoosey · 20/09/2011 14:46

Noooooooooo. There's nothing more I can say really.

tryingtoleave · 20/09/2011 14:43

I quite like Emmanuel, actually, but the only ones I know have Greek background.

tryingtoleave · 20/09/2011 14:42

Oberon? Lucien? Maybe you need to stop trying so hard. What about something like matthew? Peter? David? James? Etc... There are thousands of names that don't sound insane.

How Oberon be too Shakespearean but Draco not be too HP?!

Danica McKellar (sp?) who was Winnie in The Wonder Years (remember her) has a son called Draco, I think...

Ah yes, here you are: uk.eonline.com/news/enter_draco_danica_mckellar_welcomes_son/199842

Thanks for all the replies. Naming is just so frustrating. It's not that we don't have some ideas - I have a list as long as my arm which in my opinion is filled gorgeous and interesting names, it's just that DH won't agree to any of them. For instance; Oberon is "too Shakespearian", Lucian reminds him "of Lucifer", Emmanuel is "too Biblical"...ARGH. The only name he said he "doesn't mind" is Joaquin but surely that's far, far too Spanish for a very British baby?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Just ... no.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 20/09/2011 09:51

I...I....like it. I'm embarassed to even type that, but I do. If I get a dog, I might do with Draco.

greenzebra · 20/09/2011 09:47

you should both decide on the name, not one of you go half heartedly into going along. You will have to carry on trying to find names that you like. I was in the same position and in the end Dh said he loved the names I did becuase he loved the meanings and they had grown on him. And now he thinks they are the best names. At one point I thought that we would never agree, and Im sure every couple has the same problems. Some of my fav names though he rejected and I did with him.

Please don't do it! Everyone will laugh behind your back.

PfftTheMagicDraco · 19/09/2011 21:15

WIN!

You should TOTALLY do it.

Maybe.

LaWeasel · 19/09/2011 20:32

Canny - can I jsut say I sympathise entirely. My husband is STILL going on about Hunter being the only name he likes, FFS.

I like Draco really, but much like Hunter the associations are just too much, not worth it in the long term.

Shall I share my plan? I'm going to book the appointment to register DS when he's born and if DH hasn't grown up before then I'm bloody going without him!

scaevola · 19/09/2011 20:25

Perhaps you could try telling him that Alecto is a girls name: she was one of the Furies.

mogandthecat · 19/09/2011 19:50

not wanting to offend anyone with a Jayden - just personal taste.

mogandthecat · 19/09/2011 19:50

I really like the name Draco and, half jokingly, suggested it for a boy even before becoming pregnant with my dd - however I was told it was ridiculous!

Still think it is a nice name, and echo those who said Draco Malfoy is not a 'bad' character but quite a complex one - rather he and his family live up to his mother's name of being quite narcissistic.

Probably would not use it on balance though, but I think there are far worse names (Jayden, for instance!)

CannyFradock · 19/09/2011 19:30

Well...I'm not too surprised by this reaction, mine was sort of similar. But I really am at my wit's end. I don't think DH is kidding either because his other suggestion was Alecto (who happens to be another baddie in HP - Alecto Carrow). I think he's more hormonal than I am. SAVE ME FROM THE MADNESS.

I must confess that recently i though Albus was quite a good name. Would never use it though. Can be shortened to Albie when little and I am not sure about -bert names so prefer to Albert.
