Really want to name our baby!

DS2 is 3 days old and we just can't decide between Rex or Freddy. We have been trying each out for size but can't come to a decision. Both names have family connections, Rex was my Grandfather and Freddy was DH's so naturally I'm drawn to Rex and DH to Freddy but both of us are okay with the other.

I feel Freddy goes better with our surname (Cole) as it is 2 syllables but I like the fact that Rex is more unusual. I appreciate it's becoming more popular but I don't think it will be a Jack or Oliver. DS1 is Xander and I just feel like it would look like we put more effort into his name than DS2's if we went with Freddy.
God it's sounds ridiculous now I've typed it out but I just want to give the poor child a name!
Opinions please Smile

Rex is a cool person's name. Rex plays lead guitar in a band and wears skinny jeans. Freddy is a little boy in the fifties.

Nightstar · 23/09/2011 21:40

I think Rex is a bit mean as a first name, but quite cool as a middle name. Freddie as a first name then Rex, that gets my vote

Thank you Caroline good advice. We have trialled Asa today and so far so good. I know the family will be a bit Shock but they were when we chose Xander so no change there!

Don't be teary - those are four great names - it's just your hormones! You have a few more weeks before you need to register so no need to rush. I always thought the best tip I heard was to imagine yourself standing the playground shouting for your kid - would you be a bit embarrassed? If yes, then rule that one out! It is important to have a couple of names so that when you are cross you can call out both names to underline quite how cross you are! I slightly regret calling our second daughter a name no-one had heard of that she will always have to spell out - people can't relate to it and often forget her name (that is, until next summer when the next Pixar movie comes out and her name is that of the princess) (horror of horror for us)!

I'm going to sleep on Asa and Luca and see how I feel in the morning as am all teary about it at the moment!

we couldn't choose between two names throughout the whole pregnancy, after 7 days post birth we chose a completely different name that never appeared on any of our lists.

let your mind rest and see what you feel like calling him when you are having a little cuddle

what about Lachlan?

shufflebum · 22/09/2011 21:46

Thanks, have finally managed to get a suggestion out of DH - Luca which I do like and I'm really liking Asa....

I think they are both nice, but agree with the poster who pointed out that Rex Cole means 'King Cole' as in the rhyme, so I would avoid that for this reason.

Frederick Rex sounds good - personally would use Frederick on bc and call him Freddy.

Hope the right name comes to you soon.

shufflebum · 22/09/2011 21:06

Still not named poor DS2. Have named him Freddy (got DS1 to pull it out of a hat) then had a wobble and changed it to Rex and now today I don't think it suits him. Am getting all emotional over it as people keep asking his name and I can't tell them.

I slightly prefer Rex. I think because its more unique and goes better with Xander than Freddy. Also as you pushed Rex/Freddy out I think that he should be named after your Grandad Grin. I do like the idea of using Felix as a compromise though but I don't think it goes so well with Xander.

seeker · 19/09/2011 15:42

Freddy. But please call him Frederick- he won't always be a baby so won't always want a cutesy name.

I think Freddie and Xander sound great together. Rex and Xander don't work that well together imo.

Try saying Rex, Xander quickly like when you'll be calling them. I think the two Xs could run into each other.

I think Freddie and Xander sound better together.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/09/2011 21:49

Don't like Rex, sorry.

Not fond of Freddy but love Frederick/Fred.

Like Jude.

shufflebum · 18/09/2011 21:43

I think Rex goes better with Xander, it's just the one syllable that bothers me.
