When you see/hear Marley are you more inclined to think boy/girl?
My partner says girl, I say boy.
It's been described as male, female and unisex on various websites and is currently more popular as a girls name. Not sure if it's just the Bob Marley reference that makes me think boy? I don't want this thread to turn into an argument about who's right or wrong, or how it's used in other countries, origin etc. Just opinions on how it sounds please.
Thanx :) :) :)

I think Scrooges partner Jacob Marley, dog, Bob

Ihavewelliesbutitssunny · 20/09/2011 15:36

I would think dog first tbh, then boy

birdofthenorth · 20/09/2011 15:30

I think boy. You could always have it as a shortening of the (definitely masculine) Marlon

DriverDan · 20/09/2011 15:21

My friend (a girl!) is Mahli, think her mum made up the spelling!

CollieandPup · 19/09/2011 17:29

Boy. Fwiw, I wouldn't use it personally, but I do really like it.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/09/2011 21:57

Don't see it as either. It says surname to me.

umiaisha · 18/09/2011 21:53

I think girl, as a relative's daughter is called Marley, named after the country/place I think..

nulgirl · 18/09/2011 18:52

At dd's nursery, a little girl who is mixed race was called Marley. Beautiful child with a blond afro. She suited it totally. Not sure if it would suit a fair skinned, freckly child though

mynameiselisaday · 18/09/2011 18:37

Girl... is the name of Will Smith's daughter in "I am Legend".

Like it.

2wwmadness · 18/09/2011 17:44

3 boys on girl. One lad is 6 little girl 3 the other two are babies. If im honest. The little girl suits it more. It just suits her. Can't explain it really

lchodge · 18/09/2011 17:14

2wwmadness Are all 4 boys?

When I started this thread I thought boy but the more people have agreed the more I've started to think girl!!! Ever since I saw the Marlene connection.

Dog. Don't see it as either gender really.

2wwmadness · 18/09/2011 17:10

I know 4! I think it's going to be a very popular littleboys name. I like but have been put off a bit as u think it's going to be the new "Ellie-mae" iyswim

lchodge · 18/09/2011 17:07

I'm not bothered who likes/dislikes it just wondering wether people think boy/girl.

Bob Marley fans who decided to call their child after their hero but Bob was a bit pedestrian. OR the ghost in Scrooge, OR that ghastly film/book, OR a NN for Marlene.
I think you can tell I don't like it.

LetThereBeRock · 18/09/2011 16:59

Great name for a boy that should read.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/09/2011 16:54

Jacob...tightfisted, lots of chains, Scrooge.

LaWeasel · 18/09/2011 16:50

I only know a little boy Marley, but I don't think it would sound odd as either gender. (he is a lovely child too!)

LetThereBeRock · 18/09/2011 16:42

Boy.Definitely boy. It's a gorgeous name.

lchodge · 18/09/2011 15:19

Hmmm now you've mentioned Marlene I'm leaning towards girl.....dammit! Don't know if I like the 'ie' spelling though.

boy

GirlWithALlamaTattoo · 18/09/2011 15:12

Marley: boy. Dad probably a Bob Marley fan. I quite like it.

Marlie: middle-aged to elderly woman, probably short for Marlene.

picnicbasketcase · 18/09/2011 15:11

Only ever known one Marley, a boy. Seemed like a very cute name as baby/toddler/small boy. Sounds kind of different now he's a teenager and he doesn't like the name.

lchodge · 18/09/2011 15:06

Again, the dog thing wouldn't put me off, I know several dogs called Lucy, Jake, Dylan etc and lots of cats called Oscar and Bella. I think it's just more common these days for pet owners to give their animals human names.

FairyArmadillo · 18/09/2011 15:04

Both. I think of it as a unisex name. I like it.
