Oenone for a girl, Inigo for a boy

This is probably a pointless thread as is purely hypothetical, however I had a pregnancy scare in January and if I had been pregnant, it would have been due about now.

Still feel a bit wistful about it now.

ANYWAY I thought I would risk the MN baby name wrath and see what you would think of my choices

Girl
Oenone
Iris
Artemis
Ariadne
Hera

Boy
Inigo
Albert
Idris

What do you think?

Great names.

Great namechange.

First thing I thought was 'how the hell doyou pronounce it', and once I knew the first hting I thought was 'hey nonny nonny', so it's a no from me. Not a fan of Hera either I'm afraid. I like Iris though.
I LOVE Inigo, Idris is nice but only if you have Welsh/African connections, Albert nice but popular

alexpolismum · 08/09/2011 15:45

Ariadne is my dd's name. I love it!

I like Oenone too, but I think it would be very difficult to grow up with in the UK, so unless you are planning on emigrating to Greece, it's probably best to think carefully about this one.

(sneaky way to call your daughter Wine, though!)

mamsnet · 08/09/2011 14:23

THe n in Iñigo is, in fact a ñ.. so it sounds like the ni in onion.. sort of ny..

If anybody pronounces it Inigo, I promise I will die on purpose just to come back and haunt them.

suspiria · 08/09/2011 14:16

Iris, Artemis, Ariadne, Inigo. Fabulous names.

Inigo is on my shortlist for this baby. I'm using Iris as a middle name if we have a girl . Ariadne is on my shortlist for any future daughter.

'Oenone is ee-no-nee'

but is it ee-no-nee or ee-know-nee? Because the first sounds like hey nonny nonny

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 08/09/2011 13:13

Inigo Montoya!! can't see past that now, will have to get the Princess Bride out of the back of the cupboard and watch it tonight!!

sorry but i don't really like any of the others except Ariadne. all seem a bit too try hard.

PivotPivotPIVOT · 08/09/2011 13:02

gwendoline it's pronounced eee-no-nee (the oe is pronounced the same as in Phoebe)

Laughing at onanism. It's not scoring highly - poor old Oenone. Grin

This is a very self-indulgent thread so thanks for (a) giving me the time of day and (b) not taking the piss!

Love, love, love Inigo! Know a man named Idris, never heard of Oeone :)

latrucha · 08/09/2011 10:39

sorry

latrucha · 08/09/2011 10:38

Soory this isn't a real baby names thread too. My post sounds horrible!

I have a list of fantasy baby names too. Farah is my girl's name.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/09/2011 10:33

For the first time I understand what it's like to not be Irish and confronted with Caoimhe and Saoirse!

How the hell do you pronounce Oenone? Confused

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 08/09/2011 10:31

Oneoneoene or whatever it is sounds like onanism which is self pleasuring Grin
I do like Iris and Inigo. I knew an Inigo, he was lovely. He was pronounced In-ee-go rather than Mr Pipkin who was In-i-go.

PivotPivotPIVOT · 08/09/2011 10:28

OOH Ondine. That reminds me of my fictional twins (Odette and Odile).

I do wish this place had a [twat] emoticon because I would apply it to myself.

Thanks Maryz Smile. I do wander up the baby aisle in Sainsbos and look longingly at the tubs of sudocrem and nappies Hmm.

PLUS my dd is nearly 16. Look at all the new stuff they make. I can buy all sorts of completely unecessary crap like heated baby wipes containers.

It would be lovely. I look like some weirdo smiling at strangers' babies at the moment.

Inigo is fantastic, but poor Oenone is condemned to a lifetime of people looking blank and saying 'What?'
What about Undine or Ondine?

PivotPivotPIVOT · 08/09/2011 10:19

Maryz you are right - when I think of all the grandiose names I thought of when I was pregnant with dd (Cassiopeia, Cassandra, Angelica, Pheonicia Hmm) and she ended up with a very normal name - Sophia.

I am very broody at the moment I must admit and DP has wanted a baby for ages. However life has been a nightmare this year so I doubt we will tbh.

You should hear DP's names - Ra, Osiris, Ramses.

We are NORMAL people btw Grin, not maniacs.

Oh Viola - I knew she was a character in Phedre but had no idea what she got up to! Yes that is rather offputting, I rather like the original Greek myth link to wine Grin

DP would hate Oenone anyway, he looked at me blankly when I told him and said it is just a random collection of vowels.

Iris. Hate the others.
Idris if you're Welsh. Otherwise Albert.

DessieLou · 08/09/2011 10:04

Iris and Albert have my vote...sound great together so I suggest you should have twins! Wink
Good luck if you are TTC. Smile

ViolaTricolor · 08/09/2011 08:53

I like Inigo, but Oenone is a rather unappealing character in Racine's Phedre. She's a devoted servant who makes a false accusation of rape to cover up her mistress's guilt, then ends up throwing herself off a cliff.

sparkle12mar08 · 08/09/2011 08:33

Umm, no. Just... no.

Nikki82 · 07/09/2011 22:37

I know a boy named Inigo.. It's a great name.
