Sorry, but I still really like Persimmon.

I'm pronouncing it PER-sim-on. Like the fruit, not the house building company.

I love the nickname Percy for a little girl.

It's pretty. It fits with my other daughter's name.

Is it really so terrible?

You see, my problem is that deep down, I secretly think that I'm right about this and you lot are ALL WRONG. I realise this is unlikely, but such is my hormones vanity.

It's a dreadful name - right there with Peaches, Apple, Melon, Papaya or any other random supermarket label.

That it looks identical to a major housebuilding company is even worse.

allhailtheaubergine · 05/09/2011 14:22

Lorelei is really nice actually. Have just looked it up on a meaning site, and it lead me to Aurora and Laurel too.

McAlpine weren't taken over by Persimmon. Maybe you could get them to sponsor your family, and give you a lovely big house to live in. Grin

SheCutOffTheirTails · 05/09/2011 14:17

I've never heard of Persimmon Homes.

I think Persimmon is OK. Persephone is probably better though.

MelinaM · 05/09/2011 14:14

Persimmon Homes instantly sprung to mind here tooGrin ..so that'd be a no from me!!

MissBeehiving · 05/09/2011 13:21

Sorry, nothing construction ve to add. Just popped by for a snigger Grin

Badtasteflump · 05/09/2011 13:19

And PS I honestly thought this was going to be a thread about somebody admitting preferring new-builds or something...

Sorry to be so harsh!

Badtasteflump · 05/09/2011 13:15

Sorry but It's awful! Why not just call her Bovis?

LydiaWickham · 05/09/2011 13:10

You might get away with it for a boy, but not a girl.

And it's a house building firm.

And she'll be bullied.

Pick something else for the nickname Percy.

MmeLindor. · 05/09/2011 13:07

Oh, I didn't know that Persimmon used to McAlpine. I prefer McAlpine.

NOT as a baby name, Aubergine so don't even consider it.

SailorVie · 05/09/2011 13:04

You could always call her Sharon... after all the other name for Persimmon fruit is Sharon Fruit.

Hideous name, pregnancy hormones raging much?

MugglesandLuna · 05/09/2011 13:03

We live in a Persimmon home.
They are very nice, but not a great name for a DC.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 05/09/2011 13:02

Which isn't a dig I meant to say. I had excellent taste Grin

OriginalPoster · 05/09/2011 13:01

They used to be McAlpine, would make a nice middle name.

Will you get a NHBC certificate instead of a standard birth certificate (Newborn Human Birth Certificate)?

Seriously, ignore the banter. Just go for it, if it's a name you both really like.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 05/09/2011 13:00

x-post!

Persephone was on my list of baby names when I was a young goth teenager. Which isn't I dig - it's such a pretty name. Lorelei was another (connotations again though maybe - like I said, I'm not really up on mythology).

allhailtheaubergine · 05/09/2011 12:59

No, it might be a boy

Yes I have mostly stopped vomming Grin

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 05/09/2011 12:58

I'm not very up on Greek myths - did Persephone do something dreadful (most of them did, iirc)?

allhailtheaubergine · 05/09/2011 12:58

But... But... We don't live in uk. I had never heard of the house company.

And yes, we are hippy dippy types. Eldest daughter is called something along the lines of Tigerlilly.

And I DO like Persephone, but I worry about the Rape of Persephone connotations.

OP posts:
JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 05/09/2011 12:56

Oh I think it's OK. Plenty of DCs around named after fruit (or spices or herbs or flowers of course) - it's not that out there. Although actually I can't think of any fruit-related names now I've said that...

But if you love Percy you'd be safer going for Persephone.

MmeLindor. · 05/09/2011 12:56

Pregnancy hormones are a bitch.

LOL at brother to Barrett and Wimpey.

ShoutyHamster · 05/09/2011 12:51

A sister to Barrett and Wimpey Grin

No no no. Persephone instead! That is lovely.

seeker · 05/09/2011 12:49

And the fruit is pronounced per SIMM on anyway.

seeker · 05/09/2011 12:48

It's ghastly. And Percy is a boy's name. And not a very nice boy's name either. Why would you call a girl a boy's name?

schobe · 05/09/2011 12:48

LOL at Wimpey
