hi all,
What do you think of the name India for a little girl?
I usually prefere more classic English names, not into calling children sky, apple etc, anyway since iv come across India I love it, but dont want it to be a name people laugh at.
Honest opinions please

And if u have any ideas what goes well with it as a middle name I'd appreciate it Surname is 2 syllables starting with H.

Thank you xx

Thank you for all ur input :) I met a lady today who's niece is called India - apparently the only negative comments or "Paki" jokes have come from adults, rather than children who she goes to school with! Which is shocking but good to know the younger generation are not as ignorant as ours :)

I have a (white) relative called India, she spent her early school years being called P*ki by her school mates & the usual cornershop/curry kids jokes.

I don't think it's a good name for anything other than a country, sorry!

mrsarmadillo · 31/08/2011 13:09

I do like it, also indiana is lovely.

iskra · 31/08/2011 13:08

Someone suggested Indra upthread - which is actually a boy's name. Indira is a female alternative.

TillyIpswitch · 31/08/2011 02:42

My very honest opinion is that it's very current and will therefore date. But, if that doesn't bother you, then go for it.

I would avoid Rose as a middle name, though - India Rose is just too predictable.

thecaptaincrocfamily · 30/08/2011 23:15

Really like this and I love very english names like Eliza! Belle, Niaive, sorrel, mae, brie, honey, mia, louvre, as middle names?

brodanbell · 30/08/2011 22:58

Love India, and also Indie as a nn. Think it is pretty and also a worldy-wide kind of name all at the same time. It feels quite inspirational to me, like she'll grow up to explore the world and embrace different cultures. I don't think you have to have gone to India to use it. I haven't been but I would use it.

Bitdifferent · 30/08/2011 21:15

Great country but probably not best to go there now you're pregnant, too many inoculations, malaria tablets to take. Definately would recommend for the future though.

MockingbirdsNotForSale · 30/08/2011 21:07

I think its a beautiful name and I really really wanted to call my DD it but then I googled it with my surname and got some extremely undesirable results and I did not want my DD to bear the brunt of it!! If you like it go for it. Congratulations btw Smile.

handsomeharry · 30/08/2011 21:07

I love the name India.

happybubblebrain · 30/08/2011 21:05

I love the place too.

happybubblebrain · 30/08/2011 21:04

I love it. It was on my list, in second place.
India Blue
India May
India Hope

I think the middle name can be almost anything - a name that has a special meaning to you.

rachel234 · 30/08/2011 20:55

Have you got any connections to India - is your family from there? Otherwise I'd find it an odd choice - like calling your child Africa.

justhayley · 30/08/2011 20:53

Thank you for all your input!

I love India Rose, not sure if Rose is too old fashioned but I think it's classic & pretty, I like it with India but not on it's own.

Don't know why I'm thinking of names I'm only 6weeks lol

WhiffOfBath · 30/08/2011 19:46

I know several. They are all nice. I wouldn't choose it myself, though.

Hulababy · 30/08/2011 19:45

I like the name India.

acsec · 30/08/2011 19:45

Love India, it's on my list. Also like Indira.

birdofthenorth · 30/08/2011 19:44

I love Indra and Indigo for girls! I have to say I know a couple of (cute) young Indias near me whose parents are definitely neither posh nor rich (more the oppposite tbh!). India is a nice name though, exotic but pronouncable and spellable.

talkingnonsense · 30/08/2011 19:41

India Rose is fairly popular but lovely

mollymole · 30/08/2011 19:38

i like India (also like Indra) but i think of Indigo as a boys name

MsChanandlerBong · 30/08/2011 19:34

I know an India who is lovely and really suits her name (very middle class, creative/bohemian type). Personally I prefer Indigo, and raised this as an option with DH who declared that I am much too uptight to have a daughter called Indigo Grin
