Hello, at 30 weeks pregnant my OH and I have started to think about names for our DC. As this will be our first we are looking for people's general thoughts on our name ideas.

Boys
Lennox
Atticus
Chester
Phoenix
Orlando
Austin

Girls
Emilia (nn Lila)
Eloise
Isla
Gabriella
India
Scarlett

What are your opinions on these? Ideally we want our DC to be the only one in their class with their name but don't want it to be too unusual/no one can understand or say it. Do you have any other suggestions that would fit our criteria?

They are very different styles- your girls names are v pretty and seem like real names while your boys names are a bit try-hard. They seem like names that could easily be surnames/place names. I don't think they go together so if you had another child I can't see you using the same list - eg Chester and Gabriella don't sound like they are related.

It is really difficult to predict which names will be unusual as it depends on where you are - lots of people will try and get unusual ones so you end up with duplication. I really like Eloise and Gabriella - but both could be shortened to Ellie/elle and there are lots of those around.( Emilia is a bit tricky as I think you'll get lots of variations on the spelling etc

I don't really like the boys names - too hard/american for me- Atticus is best. What about Gabriel? Ellis?

Ephiny · 02/09/2011 16:44

I like Gabriella, sounds like you have quite a long surname though so it might be a bit of a mouthful. Isla is absolutely lovely, that would probably be my first choice.
Not sure I 'get' Lila as a nickname for Emilia - if you like Lila why not call her that, it's a perfectly good name in its own right. Both quite popular at the moment though, I think.

I'm not too keen on the boys names, seem either a bit pretentious or too surname-ey.

lohby · 02/09/2011 15:45

I like Chester and Austin for the boys.

Isla, Eloise, and Scarlett are pretty popular here, there could be others in a class or school year with that name if you used them.

Similarly Amelia, Emily and Emma are all popular and similar sound to Emilia

I would chose Gabriella, usual and classic.

Any other opinions?

Well it's more just started discussing! Most of the names I loved at the beginning of the pregnancy seem un-thought through and silly now OH and I have sat down and talked it through properly.

Oh & just starting to think about names at 30 weeks???? I'm thinking of names now for my dc3 & I'm not even allowed to have another one!! Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 31/08/2011 20:56

Zetta doesn't read as Zee-ta, she'll have a lifetime of Zeh-ta. Zita is better for that pronunciation.

CaptainMartinCrieff · 31/08/2011 20:52

Actually no!

Eloise Scarlett

CaptainMartinCrieff · 31/08/2011 20:52

Austin Lennox
And
Gabriella Scarlett

MummysLittleSunbeams · 31/08/2011 20:49

Wow this is the first time I've been on a baby name thread on mn & actually liked the names! Grin

I'm also into names that are not popular but that people are familiar with (I have a Sadie & a Kitty)

I like all of your names but I'm dead against calling a baby X but having a nn of Y. I believe nn's should naturally evolve & can't be pre-ordained.

If I had to choose I'd say Atticus & Scarlett.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2011 20:45

Boys
Lennox
Atticus
Chester
Phoenix
Orlando
Austin

LOVE Atticus but dislike all of the others, sorry.

Girls
Emilia (nn Lila)
Eloise
Isla
Gabriella
India
Scarlett

Love Eloise.

autumngirl231 · 31/08/2011 20:37

Eloise is beatiful, as is Zetta. I love all of the boy's names. How about -

Scarlett Eloise
Eloise Gabriella
Zetta Emilia

Phoenix Orlando
Lennox Austin
Atticus Chester

MadHatter302 · 31/08/2011 13:10

Just seen the suggestion of Zetta, very nice!

manicinsomniac · 31/08/2011 12:01

Boys
Lennox - not keen, sounds like a surname
Atticus - bit heavy for a child. Finch could be a good nn though?!
Chester - quite nice
Phoenix - I actually like it but I think the general concensus would be 'weird'
Orlando - too fancy
Austin - it's ok, not overly keen.

Girls
Emilia (nn Lila) - sweet, like it
Eloise - not keen
Isla - lovely
Gabriella - beautiful, I used it as a middle name
India - nice
Scarlett - not keen.

For a boy I would choose:
Chester with something like Thomas, Alexander or James in the middle.
or (as a guilty pleasure which I think is totally ridiculous but sounds kind of awesome!) ... Phoenix Orlando (!?!)

For a girl I would choose:
Gabriella Emilia (other middle options - Alexa, Faye, Lucy, Niamh)
India Gabriella (other middle options - Jade, Faith, Kate)
Isla Scarlett (other middle options - Abigail, Grace, Katherine, Matilda)

BedHog · 31/08/2011 08:52

Boys
Lennox - good name, and Lennie is a v. cool nickname
Atticus - pretentious
Chester - animal name
Phoenix - girls name
Orlando - ok
Austin - reminds me of ugly, annoying 10 year olds.

Girls
Emilia (nn Lila) - pretty but popular
Eloise - love this, nn Lois
Isla - like
Gabriella - bit princessy
India - Earth Mother
Scarlett - racy

LaLaLaLayla · 31/08/2011 04:22

Atticus & Orlando, Eloise & India.

Offspring · 31/08/2011 03:59

Not overly keen on the boys names, but at a push would have Lennox Austin or Austin Lennox.

I really love the name Eloise and would have it for this DC if it was a girl (or if Eloise was a unisex name :)). MN-wise I would have Eloise Gabrielle, or for others not on your list I like Eloise Kate and Eloise Georgia.
I also like Emilia and Isla.

bunintheoven1 · 30/08/2011 21:17

Okay Zetta (pn Zee-tah) has now been added to the girls list!

OP posts:
curlwur200 · 30/08/2011 18:07

Personally I would go with Orlando Lennox or Phoenix Austin and Emilia Eloise or Gabriella Scarlett. Good luck! :)

rachel234 · 30/08/2011 17:08

Love Lennox, Atticus and Orlando - lovely, cool, not overused names.

Your girls names, on the other hand, don't really do much for me, sorry. I'd choose Eloise if I had to.

MadHatter302 · 30/08/2011 17:07

Lennox - Love, especially nn Lenny or Lex
Atticus - Okay, not my favourite from the list
Chester - very cool, like nn Chess
Phoenix - Good as a nn but a bit 'out there' as a fn
Orlando - ^^
Austin - Like

Emilia (nn Lila) - Love the nn Lila (if pn Lee-la) and like that it is a bit different to Amelia
Eloise - Favourite of your list and would be on mine if having a daughter
Isla - Nice as mn
Gabriella - Love with nn Ella
India - nice, would be on my list as well
Scarlett - okay, mn though

I would have Lennox Austin or Chester Phoenix and Eloise Isla or India Scarlett

Good luck!

Cereal · 30/08/2011 16:46

Lennox - like
Atticus - a bit pretentious and dusty-old-attics, but I like it as it sounds quirky and academic
Chester - place name, surname or dog's name
Phoenix - place name
Orlando - place name
Austin - place name but quite like it

Emilia (nn Lila) - like Emilia, but not Lila
Eloise - like
Isla - faddy
Gabriella - pretty
India - place name and a bit "done"
Scarlett - OK but "scarlet woman" not a nice connotation

minipie · 30/08/2011 16:34

Austin is my favourite by far of your boys' names. Lennox is ok. The others are a bit "try hard" for me, sorry.

Girls: I love Emilia and Eloise. The others are nice too though, just not quite as lovely!

bunintheoven1 · 30/08/2011 16:19

Surname four sylable ending in -ery

OP posts:
janeandmichaelbanks · 30/08/2011 16:17

Not nowing syl/ending of surname it is hard but personally I think

Atticus Orlando

Girls are harder as a lot end with a

Emilia Scarlett
Gabriella Eloise
Isla Scarlett (just I think)
