will the following be the only one in a class without being too unusual...

Liberty
Tigerlilly
Callie
Darcy
Octavia
Kyra
Thea
Oonagh
Ailie
Kitty
Freya
Lydia
Fenella
Mimi
Hanna
Tegan

Which is nice/ugly/weird nick names or connotations?

OP posts:

Don't think you could guarantee being the only Kitty, Freya, Darcy, Thea or Tegan in a class.

Callie - quite like this

Liberty/Tigerlily - not really a fan

Mimi - quite sweet but isn't it a word for grandmother? Maybe as a nickname for something? Just in case she wants to be a judge or the prime minister or something (sorry for the cliche)

Fenella - like this, reminds me of an Enid Blyton book set in a circus.

Ailie - Like. Prefer it spelled Eilidh but realise that this looks odd outside of Scotland and within Scotland is very popular.

Lydia - Like, don't think it's too common

Kyra - doesn't do it for me

Octavia - probably will be the only one but personally feel it's a bit poncey

Oonagh - like

Hanna - not as popular as you'd think.

Quite a lot of pot luck though, so pick something you genuinely like. Even an unusul name could have multiples in your school, conversely a popular one could be the only one.

I think Ailie and Fenella are the only ones that fit the bill from your list.

thisisyesterday · 27/08/2011 19:38

I would say not Darcy, Thea, Kitty, Freya or Lydia.
You stand a reasonable chance (round here anyway) of having one in a class at school

although as others have posted,.. you just don't know!

my first thought on reading the title was "call her X then" lol

From your list my favourite is Octavia

IndigoBell · 27/08/2011 19:38

I love Callie and think it's still pretty unusual.

Otherwise I'd go for Freya or Lydia

Pretty much any name which is not currently in the top 100 girls names should be ok......

toomuchpurple · 27/08/2011 19:36

Liberty
Tigerlilly - Geldof (well yates) actually know someone who changed their name to it. Na sorry just too well Geldofy
Callie
Darcy - Bussell. If you want something that DC will be the only one, think to many people know it
Octavia - Roman and actually I think a bit pouncy.
Kyra - I like it (prefer it Kira though) but would people think you misspelt Ciara even though they are very very seperate names
Thea - It is alright
Oonagh - I like it (I also like Una)
Ailie - I really like it.
Kitty - People may think it's actuallt Katherine. But I really like it as a name
Freya - getting more popular I think. Don't like
Lydia - they may be the only one and yet people will still be able to say it. A win win
Fenella - Sorry just too wierd
Mimi - I like but as a nn
Hanna - I like it, in my head it's popular but then I went to school with 3 Hana's
Tegan - Not uncommon (but it maybe if you aren't in wales) I really like it but unfortunatly to close to mine to use :(

As somes who as always been the only one in class - it is great. As long as people can actually pronounce it.

FingandJeffing · 27/08/2011 19:36

A few of your names are quite popular, Freya, Kitty and Lydia. Chances are they will be the only ones in a class of 30, but they are not uncommon names at the moment. If its really important to you, try Janet, Linda, and Patricia :)

Mimi is common nn for Jemima, and that is a name on the up.
irl, I don't know anyone (under 11) called: Callie (Blakes7 fan are you?), Darcy, Octavia, Ailie, or Fenella (that's a type of pasta, right?).

Call her Julie. I DARE YOU.

I thought DC3 would have a rare name... none in school so far, but TWO others in nursery, sheesh. And people still don't know how to spell it right, and mix it up with only vaguely similar names. There's a reason DC4 has a very boring name like "John".

mandoo · 27/08/2011 19:31

Love the run down Bedhog You've hit the nail on the naming head there...especially Fenella!

Firawla · 27/08/2011 19:31

Obviously you can't say for definite, but some of those I would say are quite common/popular so if you want the name to be more rare then would not go for darcy, kitty, freya, hanna, tegan, cos i have come across quite a few of those so seem quite well used to me

I like Thea from your list, dont think i have come across a little Thea so far

PotteringAlong · 27/08/2011 19:30

Who knows?! And as you are only in 'a class' for your primary education are you really going to name her based on 7 years out of a lifetime that could see her live into her 100's?!

But I agree with boo, please don't call her tigerlily - although I'm fairly certain she'll be the only one, you'll also be singled out in the staffroom as the parent who called her tigerlily! :)

On a more serious note, she's your daughter, choose the name you like, don't overthink it.

mandoo · 27/08/2011 19:30

I work in childcare and have come across all the following names in the last 3 years. So maybe not as original as you may have first thought?
Hanna
Mimi
Tegan
Kitty
Thea
Darcy(Many times)
Octavia
Liberty

BedHog · 27/08/2011 19:29

Liberty - a brand of sanitary towel
Tigerlilly - Paula Yates & Michael Hutchence's daughter
Callie - ok, haven't heard it since the 1980s
Darcy - quite popular, prob won't be the only one in school
Octavia - posh
Kyra - ok
Thea - Theo very popular for boys
Oonagh - very Irish
Ailie - like Hayley?
Kitty - cute but quite popular
Freya - was very popular a few years ago
Lydia - chlamydia
Fenella - middle aged mediterranean woman
Mimi - cats
Hanna - Montana
Tegan - Australian

DandyGilver · 27/08/2011 19:28

Xanthe (means golden I think)

Or

Xenia

Gemjar · 27/08/2011 19:27

I thought from the title that you wanted to find a name starting with the letter x!

I like Darcy and Tegan, and I don't think there will be many others. Not sure about the rest, don't think Freya particularly is that original these days

BooBooGlass · 27/08/2011 19:25

How on earth will you know this without a crystal ball? A name is not yours to stake a claim to. But please, please not Tigerlilly or Mimi. If only to save them the embarassment of not being the only stripper of that name in the club.

Or Helen!
