will the following be the only one in a class without being too unusual...

Liberty
Tigerlilly
Callie
Darcy
Octavia
Kyra
Thea
Oonagh
Ailie
Kitty
Freya
Lydia
Fenella
Mimi
Hanna
Tegan

Which is nice/ugly/weird nick names or connotations?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
BuntyPenfold · 27/08/2011 23:02

I don't know an Octavia, Oonagh, or Tigerlily. Well, actually I do know a Tigerlily, christened Lily but nn Tigerlily.
All the rest are pretty much a current class list.

If you want to be unusual, I don't know a single little Jane or Susan.

franke · 27/08/2011 22:33

Haha! So funny to see some of the opinions on one of the names here. It's my dd1's Grin. I've always kind of regretted the spelling I chose (even though it's a recognised spelling).

I think the thread is a bit of a wind up though.....Smile

Hulababy · 27/08/2011 22:30

Liberty - one in DD's class; not my choice, it's ok, a bit "hippyish" I guess
Tigerlilly - I dont like this. I like Lily but that is v popular.
Callie - sounds like a nn. I know a couple of adults called Carolyn/Caroline with this as a potential nn
Darcy - ok, quite popular in some areas I think
Octavia - Skoda car? Not keen
Kyra - too harsh sounding for me
Thea - fine but quite popular in some areas
Oonagh - don't like
Ailie - not keen
Kitty - sounds like a nn, know of 2 children with this name re popularity but not sure if full name or nn
Freya - very popular amongst friend sof firends down south; quite nice though
Lydia - very popular in primary age girls ime
Fenella - don't know any
Mimi - sounds like a nn
Hanna - prefer Hannah or Anna but both rather popular
Tegan - know of two primary aged girls, not keen

WhiffOfBath · 27/08/2011 22:29

I know several of the following at my DD's school:
Liberty
Darcy
Thea
Kitty
Freya

I know fewer of these:
Tegan (Dr Who!)
Hanna

Please don't use because they are frightful:

Tigerlilly
Mimi

My DD is the only one of her name that I've ever come across anywhere, but hers is a surprisingly normal name to say it's so unusual. I think you may need to raid the 60s and 70s for something original that isn't outlandish or stripper-y.

Hulababy · 27/08/2011 22:25

TBH on the whole it is often just hit and miss as to whether you get abother child in the class with the same name. Many of DD's class have names in the top 10 all but 1 or 2 tbh, but there is only one duplicated name - Emily. The rest, including the top name in UK for last few years, are all the only ones in the class with the name. Most aren't even duplicated within the school.

WiiUnfit · 27/08/2011 22:20

Liberty - I don't like it sorry, it's too American like 'Faith', 'Hope' .etc
Tigerlilly - No, please don't do this to your DD
Callie - It's okay
Darcy - Again, okay but very popular atm
Octavia - It's okay but it may come across as a little pretentious
Kyra - I don't like it. By the way is it pn. 'Ky-ra' or 'Keer-a' or other?
Thea - I personally don't like Thea but a lot of people do
Oonagh - I wouldn't have a clue how to pn this
Ailie - Reminds me a bit of my hometown where people sometimes drop the 'H' from words - "I'm going 'ome with 'elen for some 'ot cross buns"
Kitty - Too feline for my liking
Freya - I like it but it is very popular
Lydia - I love it
Fenella - Reminds me of fenugreek(sp?)
Mimi - Loud-mouthed Matriarch from Shameless
Hanna - Why drop the 'H'?
Tegan - Not for me

swingingcat · 27/08/2011 22:16

Darcy is very, very popular amongst the chavesque population.

acsec · 27/08/2011 22:06

There are lots of Lydias at my school, also a Darcy. Don't like any of the others, especially not Liberty or Tigerlily!

coccyx · 27/08/2011 22:04

looking at the list I can understand why they they would be the only one in the class. !!!

ChippingIn · 27/08/2011 22:01

Liberty - Just No.
Tigerlilly - wtf - you just can't do that to a child. No.
Callie - Nice
Darcy - OK, but getting popular so no.
Octavia - Urgh - No.
Kyra - has a 'cheap celeb' sound to it - so No.
Thea - no
Oonagh - say what?
Ailie - no
Kitty - lovely, but probably wont be the only one
Freya - too popular
Lydia - no
Fenella - no
Mimi - no
Hanna - no
Tegan - No no no

Try again??

catsareevil · 27/08/2011 21:54

Liberty - a few of them about
Tigerlilly - no
Callie - Sounds like it should be short for something
Darcy - OK
Octavia - Nice
Kyra - No
Thea - Dont like it
Oonagh - OK, not great
Ailie - Eilidh?
Kitty - Sound like a nn
Freya - nice, popular
Lydia - I dont like it
Fenella - bit stiff
Mimi - no
Hanna - OK
Tegan - Slightly more popular than its position in name lists wold suggest due to number of different spellings. I like it though, strong name, not fussy.

But if you want her to be the only X in the class, Xanthe is probably your best bet!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 27/08/2011 21:53

I read your thread title and thought you wanted a name beginning with X Grin, was going to suggest Xanthe!

Of your list I would say Thea.

OneOfTheBoys · 27/08/2011 21:48

Sorry missed the one beginning with A

OneOfTheBoys · 27/08/2011 21:47

Lydia is very up and coming.
Thea, Hanna(h), Tegan, Freya, Kitty, Darcy have all been v popular in the last few years
Liberty more common in teens, the fad has largely passed for this one
Kyra/Tyra are moderately popular Afro Caribbean names so could depend on your location as to likelihood of coming across another in class.

That leaves you with Tigerlily (just no) Octavia, Fenella, Mimi and Callie. Mimi is a nn sometimes, Fenella is the witch in Chorlton and the Wheelies but haven't come across any personally.

I like Callie, or even Callista nn Callie

KenDoddsDadsDog · 27/08/2011 21:41

PS. Lydia will be up and coming due to 'The Only Way Is Essex' character. I'd put money on it.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 27/08/2011 21:40

In DDs nursery baby room (I.e not lots of kids) there is a:
Liberty
D'arcy (v.popular here)
Freya
Hannah
Ciara (not sure if it's the same as Kyra?)

mayanna123 · 27/08/2011 21:37

Some names on your list are already quite widely used I think, for example Freya. Best to check the statistics as mopsy said.

Personally I like Octavia, Theodora (Thea), Lydia and Mimi as a nickname.

mopsyflopsy · 27/08/2011 21:25

Why don't you look at the past few years of ONS statistics to see how often these girls' names were used? That will give you a more precise answer.

From your list I like Fenella and Thea.

MrsJRT · 27/08/2011 20:44

We have a Joely, never met another and always get compliments on how pretty and feminine it is yet unusual.

cheesesarnie · 27/08/2011 20:44

i have a thomas and a james(i know youre talking girls names but just using my ds's 'common' names as examples)they are both the only thomas and james in their school!so common or unusual doesnt really mean anything.
out of your names i know-
Liberty
Tigerlilly 1
Callie
Darcy 1(male)
Octavia
Kyra 2
Thea 1
Oonagh
Ailie
Kitty 2
Freya 5
Lydia 1
Fenella 1
Mimi 1
Hanna 4
Tegan 3

Bandwithering · 27/08/2011 20:43

I like Lydia from that list and think it's your best bet. It's stayed quite steady on the charts for ages.. not going up, not going down. That steadiness makes it unlikely to be doubled up in a class of thirty.

I like Tegan as well actually. Is that Welsh?

BikeRunSki · 27/08/2011 20:41

I reckon you stand more chance of her being the only Sarah, Karen, Emma or Rachel.

TrillianAstra · 27/08/2011 20:39

If you call her "X" she's quite likely to be the only X in her class.
HTH

GoingToHelenaHandcart · 27/08/2011 20:36

oh, and here is my 14 year old's view on them

Liberty - just NO!
Tigerlilly - why!!!!!!!!!?????????
Callie - just doesn't sound right
Darcy - are you going back to Pride and Prejudice? it is 2011
Octavia - that's not a name
Kyra - a dog across the road was called that
Thea - too weird
Oonagh - no, just no
Ailie - okay but not my favourite
Kitty - not, cos you might one day get a cat
Freya - again, okay
Lydia - eurgh
Fenella - ''oh no, she's got the Fenellas''
Mimi - not a name
Hanna - perfectly fine but a bit normal
Tegan - grrrrrrrrrr

there you go, the teenage perspective!

GoingToHelenaHandcart · 27/08/2011 20:31

Liberty - try too hard
Tigerlilly - name of a bar in edinburgh
Callie - name of and Edinburgh brewery (do I sense a theme Grin
Darcy - harmless, but a bit meh.
Octavia - nice and unusual, rather than out there and unusual
Kyra - I prefer the Keira spelling, if it is pronoucned that way
Thea - not the biggest fan, what if she cannot prounounce Th?
Oonagh - bit 70s
Ailie - lovely name, prefer the Eilidh spelling
Kitty - very nice, but would have a longer name on bc
Freya - too common
Lydia - gorgeous
Fenella - sounds like something a gynae might examine
Mimi - not a great name when she is past the cutesy toddler
Hanna - too common (and where is the last h?)
Tegan - bit chavvy ish.

There are some lovely names in there, good luck.
