Elowyn?

What do you think? I can't find much about it on Google, don't know the meaning etc. But I like the way it sounds and the 'lo' sound could make for different nns (not just Ellie and specifically Lola, ahem).

As always, entertain me, be brutal! x

I know a baby Elowen, hadn't heard it before she was born but love it, very gorgeous name.

I had a feeling the correct spelling would be with "wen" at the end in Cornish as it is so similar to Welsh.

With "wyn" on the end, as a Welsh speaker it'd be the same as calling a girl bert or Fred or any other masculine name Grin

Emphasising the last syllable from the end is also the same in Welsh.

It is a cornish name, Fairy. Thanks for clearing up the spellings and pronunciation for me Hairy and Shouty. I found the name on Appellation Mountain and it is meant to be spelled Elowen. The Cornish way of pronouncing it is ''Eh-LOW-en'' with the emphasis on the LOH and not the way I imagined it in my head (Ello-wen). I am so pleased I stumbled upon this name. Tis indeed gorgeous.

I love it. Never heard of it but I'm fond of Welsh sounding (is it?) and LOTR style girls' names. If DS was a girl Arwen would have been his middle name! Wouldn't even go for a nickname unless it evolves. Elowyn Alice sounds good.

And the girls name is pronounced ellowen (like hello when) and boys is pronounced like hello win.

Yes in Welsh it's -wyn for a boy and -wen for a girl, eg Tegwyn and Tegwen.

I automatically thought you were asking for opinions on a boy's name before I opened the thread!

So given that I'd go for Elowen

The end part "wyn" is masculine in Welsh - "wen" would make the name sound feminine.

I hadn't considered another name beginning in a vowel but Elowyn Alice is very pretty!

Yeah you're lucky to get a good response to be honest, I started one about the name Lyra and the results were mixed to say the least, bordering on rude!

I like both spellings, but I think Elowen is a bit less LOTR and therefore I like it a bit better.

Wow, so pleased it's getting such a positive repsponse on mumsnet. I saw it spelled Elowyn so assumed that was the 'normal' spelling. Wonder if Elowen 'looks' better?

I thought LOTR too, so not the only one. Hardly the worst connection to make though, wasn't she really beautiful?

My friend used Elowen for her baby's middle name. It's cornish and means elm tree. I presume Elowyn is an alternative spelling.

Elwyn is a fairly popular 'traditional' masculine name in Wales. Never come across Elowyn as a girl's name but I like it.
