I wonder why Dahlia and Camellia are not pronounced the way they should be, yet it is accepted as the norm? Very odd.

Actually Camellia is a really pretty name as well.

Clary · 26/08/2011 21:18

You need to say it Day-lee-a because that's how the words is said in English.

Mr Dahl is neither here nor there. As someone else says, nobody says Fucks-ya, do they? (apologies for his silly German name, it's just Mr Fox really Grin).

thisisserious · 26/08/2011 20:57

So which pronunciation is prettier do you think? There seems to be a split here! I was thinking Dah-lee-ah but I guess Day-lee-ah is more floral!

No. I don't like it. Dahlias are notorious for harbouring earwigs.

MamaLazarou · 25/08/2011 13:48

It's pronounced Day-lia, as far as I know.

My niece is Dalia (Dar-lia), which is Arabic and also pretty.

Clary · 25/08/2011 13:15

Yeah makes me think of Bertie Wooster too. At least she was the nice aunt Smile

LOL @ Delia and Dahlia!

LaLaLaLayla · 25/08/2011 13:11

My maid is called Dhalia. I think it is a beautiful name.

Plonker · 25/08/2011 08:30

Not really. Sorry.

Cereal · 25/08/2011 08:30

Same here Scaevola, I'd assume it was DAY-lee-a.

SheCutOffTheirTails · 25/08/2011 07:11

I like it too, pronounced either way.

Scaevola · 25/08/2011 07:10

The normal British flower pronunciation is Day-Lee-A (whatever the roots (sorry) - similar changes occur with eg camellia and fuchsia).

It wouldn't have occurred to me that it would be pronounced differently (in UK), and as I know I would intensely dislike having to explain a pronunciation, news of this alternate would put me straight off.

Which is a pity, as I think Aunt Dahlia is a great character and love the name (in that pronunciation).

FellatioNelson · 25/08/2011 07:06

Yes! I adore it! Pronounced either way but I prefer Day-lia, like the flower, although I agree it is somewhat illogical give the 'Dah'.

I fell in love with this name for a girl about 20 years ago, when a friend of mine had a little Swiss niece called Delia, but it was pronounced Day-lia. Although now I see there is a sleb baby called it, we can expect it to become rather over-popular.

tummytickler · 25/08/2011 06:58

Lovely, reminds me of Bertie Wooster and his Aunt Dahlia though, but that is no bad thing at all!

HerRoyalNotness · 24/08/2011 23:42

I like it and it would make my potential shortlist.

pinkthechaffinch · 24/08/2011 22:01

I knew of twins once names Delia and Dahlia.

minko · 24/08/2011 21:54

Slightly kitsch flowers these days dahlias. Bit like being called carnation or gypsophilia...

scarlettlips · 24/08/2011 21:52

Whoops Blush sorry my bad...Grin

deepfriedcupcake · 24/08/2011 21:31

Honestly, no. sorry.

MelinaM · 24/08/2011 21:29

No, Delilah is lovely thoughSmile

thisisserious · 24/08/2011 21:21

I would pronounce it Dah-lee-ah.

I once knew a ravishing Portuguese woman called Dahlia (pronounced the Dahl - lia way) so I associate it with her and think it is stunning
