Dahlia-do you like it?

I don't see it mentioned very often but I think it is v pretty. What so you think?

I wonder why Dahlia and Camellia are not pronounced the way they should be, yet it is accepted as the norm? Very odd.

Actually Camellia is a really pretty name as well.

You need to say it Day-lee-a because that's how the words is said in English.

Mr Dahl is neither here nor there. As someone else says, nobody says Fucks-ya, do they? (apologies for his silly German name, it's just Mr Fox really Grin).

So which pronunciation is prettier do you think? There seems to be a split here! I was thinking Dah-lee-ah but I guess Day-lee-ah is more floral!

No. I don't like it. Dahlias are notorious for harbouring earwigs.

It's pronounced Day-lia, as far as I know.

My niece is Dalia (Dar-lia), which is Arabic and also pretty.

The normal British flower pronunciation is Day-Lee-A (whatever the roots (sorry) - similar changes occur with eg camellia and fuchsia).

It wouldn't have occurred to me that it would be pronounced differently (in UK), and as I know I would intensely dislike having to explain a pronunciation, news of this alternate would put me straight off.

Which is a pity, as I think Aunt Dahlia is a great character and love the name (in that pronunciation).

Yes! I adore it! Pronounced either way but I prefer Day-lia, like the flower, although I agree it is somewhat illogical give the 'Dah'.

I fell in love with this name for a girl about 20 years ago, when a friend of mine had a little Swiss niece called Delia, but it was pronounced Day-lia. Although now I see there is a sleb baby called it, we can expect it to become rather over-popular.

scarlettlips- I hadn't heard of Kimberly Steward so googled it and the baby is actually called Delilah- so similar but not the same :)

I once knew a ravishing Portuguese woman called Dahlia (pronounced the Dahl - lia way) so I associate it with her and think it is stunning
