hi, just wanted your thought i have chosen the name finlay jon alexander, finlay and alexander are no brainers to me as they are my fave but we thought sticking jon in there was a nice gesture after my dad. but i am concerned that he will have the longest name !!!! has any one any thoughts on this or do you think its sounds ok?

Not too much, my son has 3 middle names (due to cross cultural negotiations between me and hubby!) and I love it. I actually added the final name at his Christening as none of them were religious so it is: 'Arjun (first name) Meyrick (Family name) Immanuel (Christian name) Singh (Sikh name) Mann'.

It sounds kind of mad but completely suits him and sums up all his different influences!

morethanasong · 25/08/2011 19:00

I'm obviously going against the grain here, but I have two middle names and I find it irritating :) I can never fit them onto forms properly, and it seems to confuse the person dealing with the form who inevitably misses one of the names/initials anyway. I don't feel really strongly about it (strongly enough to only give my DDs one middle name each!) but I thought I'd give you a different view.

LittleWhiteWolf · 25/08/2011 17:12

DD has two middle names, so three in total. There's a silly little tradition in my family that everyone has a J middle name and I wanted to continue that. My mum was also very poorly at the time so I want to honour her specifically, but she doesn't like her name so I added her favourite flower. It worked out quite nicely as DDs J middle name is Jane and its the same middle name as that of mum, sister, cousin, nana and even MIL and SIL!

Of course now we have to think of two middle names again for DC2. Thats the only trouble IMO!

HeidiHole · 25/08/2011 13:46

3 names is the norm as far as I'm concerned

LaLaLaLayla · 25/08/2011 13:14

... and having 3 names is fine.

LaLaLaLayla · 25/08/2011 13:13

It is not often I say this on here, but...

I love the name! It's really cool Smile

KikiRC · 24/08/2011 18:24

My sister has three names, because my mum, my dad & I each chose her one. I don't think she's ever found it awkward.

EJCH · 24/08/2011 15:48

I have 3 names and wanted my son to have the same. As it was he has 2 because they were all 3 syllables long. I would say go for it - it sounds lovely

Going2bamum · 23/08/2011 13:01

thanks everyone, i am surprised at how many people have 3 names! We liked Jon just because it sounds a bit more modern.

Do you think many people give their children there grandparents names ?

I have 2 middle names and dislike it (although I do still use all my names as it is my name iyswim). My husband has no middle name. Our children have 1 middle name (i.e. - 2 names).

InstantAtom · 23/08/2011 10:12

Three names is not unheard of - but it usually means posh. Most people have two.

Primafacie · 23/08/2011 10:11

Everyone in my family has 4 names. DH wanted our DC to have two. We settled for three. Why should that be a problem? Go for it.

Lara2 · 23/08/2011 10:04

Everyone in my family has 3 names - DH, DS's and myself, as well as my DB,DSis, mum and dad. Go for it!

Warlock · 22/08/2011 22:57

Both DD were given short names so that they learned them easily. The middle names were longer. Once a teacher always a teacher :)

emmanumber3 · 22/08/2011 22:56

My baby DD has 3 names Grin. I always wished I'd had 3 names myself (I've got 2) & always wanted to give my DC 3 names. DH, however, is from a family where everyone only gets the 1 name "because you only use 1" Confused & insists that 2 names is therefore "more than enough". Before having the DCs we ended up making the compromise that any boys we had would get 2 names & any girls would get 3 names. 14 years & two DS's later, I have finally had a DD & been able to give her 3 names. Yay! Grin

Warlock · 22/08/2011 22:55

My last christian name has the same initial as my surname. Officialdom often assume that I made some kind of mistake and leave it out.

btw I got a name from each parent and one from older brother

[it was nearly Ginger from the Biggles books]

oldsilver · 22/08/2011 22:52

DS has 3 first names, and his last name is also a commonly used first name - 8 syllables altogether. Though when he does tell people his name, it is mostly commented what a long handle he's got. Doesn't worry me in the slightest, it's his name Smile

drcrab · 22/08/2011 22:48

My 2 DC have 3 names. It's fine! Fwiw I like your choices! Smile

watfordmummy · 22/08/2011 22:48

Both my dss have 4 names, I love them and they work together, they each have a name for themselves, one after my family, one after dh's, ie a family name.

yellowsubmarine41 · 22/08/2011 22:47

My two have 3 names, one middle name from each side of the family.

Never been a problem.

FessaEst · 22/08/2011 22:46

Both DDs, DH, my Mum, my Siblings & I all have 3 first names. DH & I double-barrelled our surnames too so our little family all have 5 names!! No problems for any of us. Why restrict yourself - there are no rules!

LadyBoy · 22/08/2011 22:45

Three names is quite normal. Finlay Jon Alexander is a great name but I would spell Jon as John.

its fine I have three names as does my brother, and my first born. Ive kind of carried it on as a family tradition.

mumatron · 22/08/2011 22:10

My ds has 3 names. His first name and 2 family names, both grandads.

I like it.
