And if you were said close relative would you go Hmm when the name was announced?

Just interested and the name is just an option but if I really liked it, I'd use it, cat or not :o

We did it the other way around. DTs were 12 when we got the cat, we named her Tess, but if we'd ever had another daughter that would have been her name!

stayfree · 25/08/2011 23:16

We did!! lol without knowing. Called our ds Solomon and my godmother/auntie has 2 cats called Solomon and Gideon, i knew about Gideon but had forgotten about Solomon. She commented on it but don't think anyoe else took much notice. Altho, if I'd have known i may not have done but love his name now.
I have a friend who called baby same name as her own cat as it was her fave name and subsquently changed cat's name!

Deceased cat was Eira - my favourite Welsh girls name that I thought would just be too Welsh to use on a child for the sake of my painfully English parents. Eira is on the list for a theoretical DD now! Current cats have 'people names' and middle names - but I do tend to call them fatface and fluffbuttocks, neither of which I'd consider for DC.

TeacupTempest · 25/08/2011 14:56

Well my mum named her dog Rosie........I am known as Rose to most people so that was a bit odd. She didn't see the issue but when I am home the dog and I often share a confused look when mums calls one of us and we aren't quite sure which one she wants!

I don't see the problem especially not as its a very traditional girls' name. Not like calling her Spot or Sooty or something.

lollystix · 24/08/2011 22:09

I've had a Boris and a Tiddles before. My bestest cat ever was Prudence.

earshot · 24/08/2011 21:12

Er yes we did.. DD has the same name SIL's cat and it's not a lovely proper girls name like Lucy either. They thought we were mad.

We don't care tho cos we love it Grin

emmanumber3 · 24/08/2011 21:06

We have just given our DD the same name as a friend's dog. Just because we really liked the name & don't see that much of the dog anyway Grin. DS2 did have a "but we can't name the baby after X's dog" moment, but that thankfully past quite quickly.

Empusa · 24/08/2011 20:20

Tbh we're considering naming our baby with the same name as one of our pet rats. It's a pretty name.

festi · 24/08/2011 20:18

I wouldnt my db had a dog called bella and I wanted bella bor dd but just couldnt, the dog had passed away a while before dd was born tho, also a friend named her dog after my dd, I was definatly Hmm about that.

however saying that I know a child with same name as his grannies dog, a bit wiered but people get used to it.

MEBMotherof3 · 24/08/2011 20:15

Our cat died a week after our DD was born and before we had registered her birth. I really wanted to add the cats name as a second middle name as a tribute, thankfully my DH talked me out of it! I blame my hormones!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 24/08/2011 12:11

So the score is 22-1 in favour of adding it. That's pretty conclusive then! Thanks :)

I'm considering Oscar even though I have had a cat with the same name before.

Lucy's fine, and at least it's a cat- my mother's nickname was Lucy as she grew up (proper name Louise) and she was quite offended when her parents used it on their dog.

chandellina · 23/08/2011 21:35

Gwendoline - that's funny because the friend's dog name I was talking about using for my DD on the way is also Lucy! another good friend had a cat named Lucy too that was like a child to her but is now deceased. it's obviously a great name for humans and animals.

mathanxiety · 23/08/2011 17:04

I would definitely use Lucy. She will no doubt outlive the cat, and it's a people name after all so imho it should never have been used to name a cat.

The cats I know have names like Mookie, Moonpie, Murph and Cleopatra. Though my own (female) cat's mn is James -- christened by DS many years ago.

PorkChopSter · 23/08/2011 16:25

Ah, but Lucy is the name of my parents neighbour's unneutered mangy tomcat Shock

KateBC · 23/08/2011 15:27

Catsmama - Rueban is on my list for DS2, and have a rabbit called Oscar

I like people names for pets, I had a cat called Eric before, and I named my parents cat Boris. MUch better than Mr Fluffy or Tiddles, imo

GwendolineMaryLacey · 23/08/2011 15:19

OK, so the tide has turned today. I'll add it to the list of names that is getting us nowhere

As long as the child is not going to be called Tiddles or Mittens...

LaTristesse · 23/08/2011 14:55

PorkChopSter, I've nearly actually just peed myself a little bit reading that! Very funny...

My DH is named after his Mum's dog. Seems like it's acceptable, go for it!

MardyBra · 23/08/2011 09:26

I don't know but the thread title made me genuinely lol.

Abcinthia · 23/08/2011 09:25

My sister was named after a cat.

monal · 23/08/2011 09:15

My little brother is named after my dad's childhood labrador so I say go for it.

Catsmamma · 23/08/2011 09:05

my cats are called Oscar, Reuben and Faerie if that is of any help to someone looking to name babies

they have middle names also ;D truefact

exoticfruits · 23/08/2011 09:02

I didn't know that you had to have 'proper names' for cats. If I got one I would call it Elsie or Hilda.

lollystix · 22/08/2011 22:19

I took on 2 cats from cat protection league. Their names were Laura and Lucy. It just freaked me out as they are not proper names for cats. Felt like a fanny calling them that so they were quickly renamed Fatty and Skinny.
