Final shortlist for DC4

Papyrus · 17/08/2011 21:04

We've had great difficulty deciding on names for DC4 and time is running out! We both like names with a vintage feel, but my taste is a little more adventurous than DH's. Ada, Avis and Leopold are all names I love but he has vetoed this time round.

So the shortlist is:

Rose Vita
Matilda Rose
Mabel Rose

Ivan Stanley
William Stanley
George Stanley

sibling for Elizabeth (Elsa/Eliza), Henry and Anna (Annie)

Poor DD2 was nameless for five weeks, so please save us from indecision!

Thanks for all your suggestions!

DC4 is due at the beginning of Oct, so we have a while to go yet. At least when he/she is born we can discard half the names.

Ivan Stanley is fantastic! William and George are nice but a bit dull. Ivan is a cool name. Ivan sounds great with your other kids' names, too - a bit less predictable than George/William.

I love Rose Vita. I've never been a big Matilda fan - it's a great name, but it will almost definitely get shortened to Matty or Tilly or something. Mabel is a nice name too but Rose is prettier. Rose is also a bit overdone as a middle name - nice to see it up front for a change.

I disagree very much with your DH over Ada. Maybe you could show him the name statistics to prove it's coming back?

californiaburrito · 21/08/2011 16:08

I like Ivan for the boy, yeah, William and George go better with your other names but they are all individuals after all and Ivan isn't completely mismatched. In fact, I think I like it so much I'm adding it to my short list if you don't mind

For girls I like Matilda Rose or even Rose Matilda. But please no Clara Rose, it's too much!

I also have an Ada, we get loads of complements on it (despite the fact that complementing you on your kid's name is a very weird thing to do), but some people do get it confused with Ava.

How long have you got to decide?

mrswoodentop · 21/08/2011 14:21

Another thought,what about Dulcie

Cattleprod · 21/08/2011 10:24

I think it's compulsory for Henrys to have a brother called George - I know several sets.

If you like Matilda, how about Mahala? It was popular in the early 20th Century, so has that vintage feel, but doesn't seem to have come back into fashion the way that Ruby, Rose, Milly etc have. I think it's pretty.

Ephiny · 21/08/2011 10:07

I think Ada is a lovely name, and really not one I can imagine anyone getting bullied for. As you say it's a very similar spelling/sound to Ava which is very popular right now, so I don't think anyone would find it odd.

Mabel sounds far more 'old-fashioned' to me anyway - and not as nice as Ada!

Himalayanbalsam · 20/08/2011 23:05

What about Adelaide known as Ada?

Ada is my top tip for a name to come back in a big way.

lilibet · 20/08/2011 23:04

Everytime I hear of Rose for a middle name I think of the sentence Matilda Rose from the chair and left the room.

(no help at all that!!)

But I do love it as a first name.

mrswoodentop · 20/08/2011 23:00

What about Hilda .my Grandmother was Hilda Florence and she was known as Dilla for short :)

She was a lovely lady and I miss her dreadfully ,so the name has good memories for me,we had boys thoughWink

Papyrus · 20/08/2011 22:48

I'm still mourning the loss of Ada - that would be my number one choice and it goes beautifully with the other DC. But DH has absolutely put his foot down, saying that it is too old fashioned and she'll be bullied. I personally can't see any difference between Ada or Ava/Eva etc.

I wonder if I agree to Matilda - would it be too much of stretch to use Ada as a nickname, then we've both got our way?

like william stanley for DS.

also like matilda for DD though like Ada much more (my DD2 is an Ada) Grin

Papyrus · 19/08/2011 23:06

Just to complicate matters DH has decided he actually rather likes Clara after vetoing it for DD2!

I really, really love Ivan - but can see that George might be be more in keeping with the other DCs names.

Vita Rose (I know that wasn't on the list!) and Ivan Stanley would be my favourites. Not too keen on Stanley but it's OK as a middle name, and Ivan is fantastic.

AlpiniAddict · 19/08/2011 14:50

I'd go for Matilda or William(I have a William) but Rose is pretty too, though I agree that Rose Vita sounds like mineral water. Vita Rose is really nice.
I hate Mabel but I love Maybelle, turns an ugly name into a pretty one IMO

Sirzy · 19/08/2011 11:54

Love them all but would go for Matilda or George I think

oohlaalaa · 19/08/2011 11:47

Rose Vita

William Stanley

CurwySwide · 18/08/2011 09:07

Matilda could be shortened to Tilda, but it doesn't have to be shortened - I know people with names that are traditionally shortened (Catherine, Elizabeth etc.) but they have used their full names throughout their lives.

Papyrus · 18/08/2011 00:52

I think the problem is that I could quite happily call the baby any of those names. My one reservation about Matilda is that I don't like either Mattie or Tilly and its bound to get shortened isn't it?

I went out with a friend tonight and she said that Mabel with our surname (begins with a 'm') sounds like a character from Balamory!

brodanbell · 18/08/2011 00:32

William or George are lovely. Not keen on Stanley, but as a middle name it is fine.

Matilda is lovely. I'm a bit indifferent to Rose tbh, but agree with others in that Rose Vita trips along a little too comfortably - sounds a bit like Ryvita or wine or flavoured mineral water.

Mabel - sorry I have never understood why people like it. There are some gorgeous old fashioned names, but this just conjures up images of downtrodden scullery maids wearing house coats and rollers in their hair!

muminthemiddle · 18/08/2011 00:03

I was going to say William, but if you've ruled that out then George. As for the girl's I can't choose between them tbh.

SaffronCake · 17/08/2011 23:29

With your other children I'd say Rose and Ivan.

Papyrus · 17/08/2011 23:25

Thanks for all your replies

mrswoodentop I love Vita too, but DH is not keen.

I think we've just about discounted William as lovely but a bit too popular - I know that George is probably just as common, but I only know one under ten when we know four or five Williams.

At the moment my favourites are Mabel and Ivan and DH Matilda and George.
We're doomed!

We both adore Rose though so might end up with that as a compromise.
