Gray for a boy?

i love it but DH thinks it's too unusual. In fairness I've never met a Gray so that does make it unusual. I don't mind an unusual name so long as it doesn't result in him being hugely made fun of in school.

What do you think?

Or Shittah Cheerful :o

I love Gray, adding to my list of possibles for DC2!

IHeartKingThistle · 09/08/2011 20:36

Love it!

Continuum · 09/08/2011 20:36

Oh I love it! It's something we considered for a split second... as in, that's a gorgeous name, such a shame it rhymes with our surname!! Although rhyming isn't quite as bad as being called Gray Brick is it :o

CheerfulYank · 09/08/2011 20:31

Red is nn for Frederick, Mardy ... I could start a whole theme: Scarlet, Rusty, Indigo :o

pjani · 09/08/2011 20:31

I think it's pretty cool! Don't think I'd use it myself though... there is definite childhood torture potential.

browneyesblue · 09/08/2011 20:30

I really liked Gray when I was pregnant with DS, but DH was worried about the 'r' being dropped too.

I had a look at this website, which gives you info about a name and info about how people with that actual name like/dislike it. Unfortunately, there were a few mentions of being called 'Gay', which meant DH vetoed it.

There was also info on similar names, ed Graydon, Grayling, Grayson.

Still personally like the name Gray though...

MardyBra · 09/08/2011 20:16

I was sure I heard Red as being used as a name, but having posted that I'm not any more.

MardyBra · 09/08/2011 20:15

What about Red Brick, Cheerful?

SheCutOffTheirTails · 09/08/2011 20:12

Not nice.

CheerfulYank · 09/08/2011 20:01

Love Gray, and Grayson. But "son" names are SO popular right now and I couldn't just go with Gray as my surname is Brick. Gray Brick just doesn't quite do it, does it? :)

Bandwithering · 09/08/2011 19:55

What about Grady ?

Wouldn't be my cup of tea, but some people like sur namey names. Grady is quite nice actually IF you had to pick from a list of sur names.

AvrilsAtonement · 09/08/2011 16:16

Thanks to you all for replying. I can see there are some people who passionately hate the name but so far not enough to put me off I think.

I must check out the Nanny Diaries which a couple of you have mentioned.

Slightly off-putting that kittens has thought of Gay as an obvious nn though, I hadn't thought of that!!! Must mull it over.

glitter - apparently in England its mostly of Norman origin, and stems from a town called Grayes somewhere in France.

I think Grayson is a very nice name too, hadn't heard of it before. Instinct warns me though that my hard-to-please DH will not approve!

I love Gray, fab nameSmile

hulabula · 09/08/2011 13:39

Especially if it a nickname for Grayson.

hulabula · 09/08/2011 13:39

Why would you need a nickname for Gray - it is about as short as it gets Smile.

kittensliveupstairs · 09/08/2011 13:31

Grey, Greyer, Greyest.
It is a horrible name on it's own and not much better as an abbreviation for Graham, it also rhymes quite nicely with gay. I wonder what his playground NN would be?
Go for Duncan, you know you want to.

MamaLazarou · 09/08/2011 13:23

I like it a lot.

FoxyRevenger · 09/08/2011 11:08

I like it, a lot. It sounds quite elegant, and would work well for a boy or man.

hulabula · 09/08/2011 10:24

I know a Grayson, nicknamed Gray. I quite like it.

jomorgan · 08/08/2011 23:23

I quite like it as really unusual, but also really like Grayer.. what do u think of that? Its the name of the little boy in the book the Nanny Diaries.

changer22 · 08/08/2011 18:52

I think it sounds like a nn for Graham.

pranma · 08/08/2011 18:49

When dgs4 was named [Finn] dgs1 who was 8 said 'I dont know anyone called that but it's not a teasing name.'Thats what I feel about Gray-I really like it.

tethersend · 08/08/2011 18:45

It's a family name on my dad's side

LivinInATinyZoo · 08/08/2011 18:40

could always be a nn for Greyson. (cougar town)

Greyson McNally

i like it. x

Crosshair · 08/08/2011 18:36
