AIBU to go off a name just because it is my MIL's favourite?

I have always liked Anna ad as it is my grandmother's name and DD is due in October (gran's birthday month) we are seriously considering it as her name (along with Georgina as a second name for DH's maternal granny).

But I also really like Greta (really, really like it) but last night at dinner, MIL started going on and on and on about how her favourite name is Anna, and how well it'll go with the surname, how lovely it s etc etc etc.

I know I am being completely unreasonable Grin but I really don't want a name she has chosen, or will feel like she has chosen. She already likes to think that she is more important ind DH and DS's lives than I am. Angry

haha.I liked my gmas name as a middle one for dd 6months.It happened to be mils name too so i thought it was ideal. She was then such a beeatch during my pg and totally out of order afterwards that i couldnt bring myself to use it.Thats how they get you sometimes.

lisianthus · 08/08/2011 09:38

You know, I think YANBU. On a practical level, if you give your child a name that now has annoying associations for you, knowing that your MIL is going to exacerbate this every opportunity she gets, this is going to cause issues for you for some time. Why put yourself through this?

Whether you "should" or "should not" feel something is irrelevant- you DO feel this way. You are entitled to your feelings.

Besides, Greta is a lovely name.

diddl · 08/08/2011 09:38

Well I think if you get on OK with your MIL that makes a difference.

My son has the same middle name as by husband & therefore as FIL.

MIL thought that if we had a daughter she would therefore have her middle name!

Eh?-I have a family too!

diddl our MILs sound very similar. Her family is the only one that matters (to the extent that she didn't want us to invite FIL's parents to our wedding as they 'aren't part of my family). I'm not entirely sure she sees me as part of the family tbh, DS is definitely but I'm just a useful incubator Grin*

*It's not that bad really, I am exaggerating.

My MIL does make things about her that´s for sure.

My son, husband, FIL & his father all have the same middle name.

So why would it necessarily be because of FIL that we used it??!!

But when we announced my pregnancy to all GPs, MIL said to mine-well, you´ve already got a GC-as this is our first, it´ll mean more to usShock

diddl · 08/08/2011 10:17

TSC-I suppose it could be worse-she could call him ValerieGrin

kittensliveupstairs · 08/08/2011 10:19

My MiL suggested we add the name Mary to DDs BC 'since she was born abroad it doesn't matter'. Actually it does matter. She has a Brit BC from the embassy.
OP, call your DD Anna, it is a lovely classy classic name. Greta OTOH isn't.

In your case it doesn't really matter as you can tell MIL, and anyone else, that she is called after your grandmother.

33goingon64 · 08/08/2011 16:15

Why don't you have Anna and Greta on your shortlist and see which one instinctively feels right when she is born. I love Greta too, I know a Greta Florence but it is still really unusual and nice to have an unusual name. We didn't tell anyone our shortlist to avoid exactly this situation. It was hard but we were strict about it. We haven't even told anyone what our girl's name was so that we can use it in case DC 2 is a girl, without suffering people's well meant opinions!

nearlytherenow · 08/08/2011 16:26

We chose a fairly unusual, really fab (I thought!) name for DS2 when I was pregnant. We kept it a secret and didn't tell a soul. About 5 weeks before I was due, my mother (who had made constant name suggestions throughout my pregnancy) suggested it. She said that she had a friend with a grown up son named this, and had always loved it, and wouldn't it go perfectly with DS1's name, etc, etc. I almost didn't use it! I really didn't want my mother to think she'd chosen (or even first thought of) DS2's name. Not sure why - we have a good relationship - but I suppose she's a bit controlling and I was being a bit childish. In the end we used the name anyway (although he was nameless for a week first). I am so very glad that we did. I love it, it's just 'him' now, and after a brief day or 2 of my mother claiming that she 'found' his name, it has never been mentioned since. If you love the name, don't let your MiL put you off. Your baby will grow into her name and any conversations from now will soon be forgotten.

PaintedSelfInCorner · 08/08/2011 16:35

My MIL blithely announced that if we were having a girl it should be called a name which is basically her name slightly modified! Most definitely not.

Why not try playing some mind games with your MIL to see if you can work her round to backing another name which you're definitely not going to go with, then if you do decide to go with Anna then it will feel like it's "yours" again...?

SaffronCake · 08/08/2011 17:49

I think if I had your MIL I'd spend the rest of the pregnancy announcing loudly that I intended to call my daughter Princess Whitney Britney Chantel Jordan (lastname) because it reminded me in some curious way of my MIL, to whom I am so grateful.

And I'd maintain an utter stone faced seriousness too!

Dummyhunter · 08/08/2011 17:49

I vitoed a boys name l love because DH and MIL were talking about what it could be shortened to at dinner when l was 8months preg! A year after DS was born (not called that name) l confessed to DH the reason DS wasnt named the name we both adored was because of his mother. l actually do regret it because he said if that was the only reason he would have said to her before DS was born 'mum l'm glad you like that name because it is the name we have been thinking of since day one, but can you lay off just incase he doesn't look like a ...... or we change our mind'

BTW l love Anna

TheFrozenMBJ · 08/08/2011 17:55

I am very tempted Saffron

I think part of what riles me about is that DH had obviously told her we were thinking if Anna at some point (completely harmlessly, and I don't blame him) but I haven't even told my own mother because I'm worried that if she is born and just isn't an Anna my mum will be disappointed.

Dare you Grin

Oh go ONNNNNN, you know you want to.

It'll also be so much fun having the name discussions with DH and you in secret while eveyone starts to seriously expect Princess Whitney Britney Chantel Jordan too. You must never let them shorten it either, it's the full PWBCJ or nothing!

JustFiveMinutesHAHAHA · 08/08/2011 18:03

YANBU However, all you have to keep saying to everyone is that you are pleased that your MIL likes the name you have given your daughter - your Grandmother's name - totally wipes out any chance that she 'chose' it. If at anytime she gets right on your last nerve about it simply say 'MIL - we chose Anna despite you liking it, not because you liked it - it was my Grandmother's name so please shut the fuck up let it go'.

I like Anna Georgina :)

Not keen on Greta.

Please call your child the name you like and do not be swayed by the idea that someone else likes it too, or does not like it! Maybe do not talk about it for a few weeks or months and then when baby is born present your name to the world without any worries.

If MIL says 'I chose it' - just smile and say, we chose it because we love it, but we are very glad you like it too.

Good luck.

notlettingthefearshow · 08/08/2011 22:22

Stick with your favourite name! Don't worry about what other people think.
