I hadn't occured to me before I read this board, but it looks like Kit's a short form of Christopher. DP has a Christopher/Chris already.

Will anyone notice do you think?

(Please say no, please say no, please say no.... Oh Okay, just hit me with it)

Yes I think most people know Kit is a short form of CHristopher :( sorry

birdofthenorth · 07/08/2011 18:11

Sorry OP just saw your last comment re Chris being fully grown & Kit now being off your list- ignore my comment below!!

birdofthenorth · 07/08/2011 18:09

This will sound awful but I think people would assume you didn't consider your stepson as one of your own tbh. Kit is a well-known nn for Christopher (obviously not known by all, but many) & you'd be unlikely call two of your own biological kids derivatives of the same name. I had to rule out lots of names because they sounded wrong alongside my stepson's name (which is Jack, ruling out my faves Jacob & Zachery) so I sympathise as I didn't choose my DSS's name but was a bit constrained by it. But to pick something that sounded odd along side Jack would be like sending a message that the name I was picking was more important to me than Jack. Likewise Jack has a half-sister Molly by a different dad so DD as she transpired to be could not be my first choice of Mary (after my mum) because Molly is a derivative of Mary & it would therefore sound silly to sone when Jack had to say "I have two sisters, Molly & Mary." Just pick another name, I really do know how attached you get to favoured names of babes-to-be, but your kids who are already around must come first.

I sympathise though as Kit is a lovely name Smile

IssyStark · 07/08/2011 16:13

Yep, I would assume anyone male called Kit was actually as Christopher. Kit is a longstanding nn for Christopher.

SaffronCake · 07/08/2011 11:30

To be clear, I don't have a son called Christopher. Chris (Christopher) is one of my partners sons from a previous relationship. Chris is a fully grown adult man, so there is zero possibility of me ever finding myself saying "Christopher, Kit pick up your toys it's time to go".

Still though, it does seem it's only one step less blatent than having a Lauren and a Laura. Bugger. It's off the list.

(sorry pinkx - i scanned the thread for a reference, but obviously not very well Blush )

nickelbabe · 06/08/2011 15:41

yes, it is - Kit Marlowe (playwright who was around when Shakespeare was) was a Christopher.

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 06/08/2011 15:39

Kit is definitely a short for Christopher/Christian, so I wouldn't use it if your partner already has a Christopher. I really like it though! I would have difficulty calling a boy Kit because my instinct would be to go from Kit to Kitty. I wouldn't mean to but I wouldn't be able to help it!

By the way, KitKat can be a nn for other names too - there was a boy at school called Kevin-Kyle and he was called KitKat.

iklboo · 06/08/2011 15:21

It makes me think (unwholesome thoughts) about Kit Harington from Game of Thrones. The car in Knightrider was KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand)

It was I initially my first choice for DS1, but didn't go with it because DP wouldn't allow a nickname on the birth certificate and im not keen on Christopher.

Vajazzler · 06/08/2011 11:37

Sophie Ellis Bextor named her ds2 Kit think his middle name was Valentine.
I had never heard of it being a NN for Christopher before and have a christopher and a christine in the family

SiamoFottuti · 06/08/2011 11:29

My DS nn is Kit but his name is not Christopher or anything like it. Its short for kitten because he sounded exactly like a little kitten when he was newborn.

scarlettlips · 06/08/2011 11:28

Sorry but i think you need to have a re-think. I love the name Kit..but you can't have a Kit if your DP already has a son called Christopher. It's the same name!!!! It's like having Henry and Harry!

Georgimama · 06/08/2011 11:06

I think Kit Fisto, a Jedi knight from Clone Wars. But that is due to my obsessed four year DS.

If I met a boy/man called Kit I would definitely assume their real name was Christopher (principally due to Kit Marlowe as above). Definitely do not do this if your partner already has a son called Christopher. The poor child would need therapy for years.

pinkx4 · 06/08/2011 10:54

Kit has been a common nickname for Christopher for centuries. In fact, the playwright, Christopher Marlowe (contemporary of Shakespeare and equally as gifted, with some plays attributed to Shakespeare thought to have been written by Marlowe), was well-known as Kit Marlowe. I love the name and would have used it if I'd had a boy.

superjobee · 06/08/2011 10:54

i didnt know it was short for christopher :) did make me think of heroin immediately tho as thats what its known as where i live. 2nd immediate thought was the car Blush

I dont think Christopher, I think Knightrider.

It's nice, but he may well get KitKat.

Anyway, you can't use it if you already have a Christopher - people will laugh at you and you dont want that.

EssentialFattyAcid · 06/08/2011 10:38

If you have two sons, Christopher and Kit, that is going to cause confusion. Surely a different name would be preferable?

EdithWeston · 06/08/2011 10:33

Sorry, but yes. I'd automatically think Kit was nn for Christopher.

(Kitty - sometimes pruned even further to Kit - for Katharine).

Ephiny · 06/08/2011 10:31

I know it can be used as short form of Christopher (and think most people will have heard of this) but that wouldn't be my immediate association. Most Christophers shorten it to Chris in my experience.

If I didn't know if it was boy/girl, I'd probably think girl to start with, and assume short for Katherine or similar.

I don't think it should be a problem in your case though, if one is known as Chris and the other as Kit I can't imagine there'd be any confusion, they sound quite different.
