How was my Nan's friend's name likely to be spelt...?

My Nan had a good friend who she talked about a lot, and her name was pronounced 'Marry'. Is this likely to have been a shortened version of something, like, say, Marigold...? Or is it another way of pronouncing Marie (which I would pronounce MaREE)? Thanks, and sorry for the ignorance! :)

The gaelic for Mary is Mhari or Mairi, pronounced Marry.

BibiBelle · 05/08/2011 22:35

In Scotland it's Mhairi or Vhairi pn Marry

Demiwave · 05/08/2011 22:34

Marie

Sorry Dueling Fanjo - cross posts!

iskra · 05/08/2011 22:32

No, Marie Stopes pronounced it MAH-ree, not Marry.

NicwNacw · 05/08/2011 22:32

Was she Welsh? A popular welsh girls name is 'Mari'

FellatioNelson · 05/08/2011 22:32

My mum has a cousin called Marie but she pronounces it Mar-ree, with a long aar sound. I also know a woman whose name is Marrie. I would guess it is short for Marilyn, or Marian.

DuelingFanjo · 05/08/2011 22:31

it would be Mari in Wales, was there a Welsh connection?

Summerbird73 · 05/08/2011 22:31

YY like Marie Stopes ('Marrie' Stopes)
