And what is the general opinion on it?

I don't think my name has increased in popularity significantly since I was born (at the moment it is around the 300-350 mark in the stats) but it is very frequently mentioned on here and seems to be pretty much universally adored on mumsnet :)

hypenated sunny-wet dog's name. I haven't a clue what that could be

ZZZenAgain · 04/08/2011 16:31

It won't be Sue-Ellen (Dallas y'all rmember)
Mary-Jo
Anne-Marie

EduStudent · 04/08/2011 16:29

BINGO! Just been described as a dogs name.

This is oddly addictive.

ZZZenAgain · 04/08/2011 16:29

go on, tell us, what's your name?
I'm another Alexandra btw

ZZZenAgain · 04/08/2011 16:28

sunny but wet

EduStudent · 04/08/2011 16:28

Oh wait, just found another thread where someone's described it as a 'wet' name.

As well as awful, dated and uninteresting.

Oh well Grin

EduStudent · 04/08/2011 16:26

Mine's been mentioned as a nice, sunny name on a couple of unusual thread names.

It's also been put forward as the exception to the rule that hyphenated first names are chavvy Grin

The only thread dedicated solely to my name was entirely positive Shock Grin [smug]

ZZZenAgain · 04/08/2011 16:23

your past will catch up with you Teela

I love Victoria

branstonsandcheese · 04/08/2011 16:19

Mine is being discussed on another thread just now. Opinions are mixed. I'm not too bothered - mind far more when the DCs names are criticised!

TeelaBrown · 04/08/2011 16:18

Mine has been in a poncey/ try-hard name thread too Blush I must remember to tell my parents Grin

Also, one poster said they thought my name was OK, but it was the name of her husband's ex-girlfriend so she wouldn't choose it! Gave me a slight wave of paranoia, but even though it's not common, I'm not the ONLY person with this name!

HerdOfTinyElephants · 04/08/2011 16:18

I've not seen it mentioned, but just did a search and got back over 500 posts, so I guess it comes up quite often... the ones I skimmed were all pretty positive about it. There were virtually NO others when I was growing up; I have still never met another anywhere near my age, but it's quite popular for girls now so I keep hearing people calling my name and turning to find that they are talking to a seven-year-old. On the plus side, I can now buy all the personalised mugs and door plaques I could ever want but could never find as a child.

Raahh · 04/08/2011 16:18

Mine is another 'typically 70's- I went to school with half a dozen' type name. I hate it. It's Joanne, am Jo to everybody (except my mother). It is a name I cannot imagine a 90 year old having. I have a lovely, classic middle name, and always wished that that had been my first name instead.

DamselInDisarray · 04/08/2011 16:16

Rarely and mostly in threads about names that almost certainly won't make a comeback. It's a fair comment; it's not a nice name.

Meita · 04/08/2011 16:14

Oh I too stand corrected after a brief search. 2 mentions. Once on a 'unusual girl's names' thread and once in the list of names posted on the 2010 stats thread. Apparently it's joint nr. 2589 with 9 girls being named that in 2010.
Only if I drop the extra -h at the end of my name that my parents added for their own strange reasons though (think Susanna - I'd be Susannah).

Folicacid · 04/08/2011 16:13

Yes plenty. It was a very unusual name growing up but more popular now polarising on mumsnet.

Some people love it but others denounce it as try hard, ever so popular round here, doesn't pass the judge or MP test

And it always provokes a debate on how to pronounce it.

Yawn.

CareyHunt · 04/08/2011 16:12

Mines another 'dead popular late 70's early 80's, pretty uncommon now'. It has come up, and was met with 'lovely, classic' etc.

I guess it's a pretty safe name. I don't hate it, and if I thought someone was going to name their child it I wouldn't think 'for the love of God NOOOO'...just 'meh'.

Interestingly, on the 'baby name' finder the predictions about clothes/ shops etc were spot on for my name! ( and my dc's). We must be walking MN cliches!

SecretNutellaFix · 04/08/2011 16:12

Classic and underused for me, anyway. Maria.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 04/08/2011 16:11

Yes, mentioned as an idea, but I dont believe anybody ever says, oh yes I like that one.
Victoria btw :)

stardustn · 04/08/2011 16:10

It's Helena btw

notso · 04/08/2011 16:09

Yes, mine has been popular for ages.
Some people suggest it as a classic,
some people think it is boring,
some people insist on putting an ie at the end of it,
no doubt some people think you can't be a high court judge with it,
and it appears you have to change it if you marry into the royal family.

stardustn · 04/08/2011 16:09

Just done a proper search for mine and yep, almost every comment is positive. The only issue mentioned is pronunciation (which I agree with) and one comment that it is 'uppity'. They obviously haven't met me :o

OP posts:
argghh · 04/08/2011 16:08

Just had a look through and its mentioned on the 'beautiful classy elegant' name thread - oooo get me!

Its Alexandra by the way

befuzzled · 04/08/2011 16:08

I am like you OP (preen, preen)

Meita · 04/08/2011 16:07

Never. I've never met anyone sharing my name in RL either.

Yama · 04/08/2011 16:07

Only on the 'Who's got a typically 70's name then?' threads.
