Is your own name ever brought up on the baby name threads?

And what is the general opinion on it?

I don't think my name has increased in popularity significantly since I was born (at the moment it is around the 300-350 mark in the stats) but it is very frequently mentioned on here and seems to be pretty much universally adored on mumsnet :)

I never noticed mine and then in the past few months its been mentioned a lot more - it was mentioned today in a strong female name thread. I never liked it Grin

I've only ever met one other, we both looked at each other rather gobsmacked we were both so shocked.

Really branston ,begins with a P ,I like it now ,wasn't so keen as a child as everyone thought it was difficult to spell but I think it's quite versatile mow ,It was shortened at school and University and then I went back to the full name when I started work.Have recently gone back to the shortened form a bit ,largely because it is a nightmare to text.

My brother is Julian ,you never hear that on any threads!

Mine comes up once a year or so and the OP is always told that it's 'too seventies'. So maybe one now for DD's grandchildren...

Very occasionally (it came up the other day actually) and it generally gets either no reaction or a positive one. It's certainly not making any inroads into the top 100 names.

Personally I'd never give a baby girl my name though. It feels very dated to me, but it's fairly unusual and very regional, so I guess for most people it doesn't have the baggage.

funnily enough it's actually coming out first.

Mine is one of those names which has a variety of different spellings so that if you added them all up, it'd very probably top the most popular girl's names list.

When I was given it in the 70s it was deeply unfashionable and right after I was born a load of them appeared in the obituaries and my parents thought: 'what the hell have we done?!' Granny chic was not in back then. They even ensured my middle name was simple enough so that if I really, really hated my first name, I could use that instead.

And now you can't move for them. Funny how fashions change - and this is why I'd never say never to the possibility of even the most ghastly name regaining popularity (for the record, my name's not ghastly; it's lovely, but you know what I mean).

I think we should go back to all girls being called Jane, Mary or Elizabeth and boys being Henry, Thomas or George. Was simpler.

I assume because its a very 1960-70 s name. So old enough to be dated but too young to come back in as granny chic

georgimama I'm a Helen too,and I think I did see it suggested once... I know its not an unusual name but I do think it is a classic and very underused now. I also like Helena,which I was going to be,but my parents decided to drop the a.My mother had a cousin who died of cancer at 15 and her name was Helena.I'm named after her but they didn't want to use quite the same name as her death was so tragic.

Just did a MN search for mine and it came up on quite a few threads, including:

  1. 'plain' names?
  2. "Old Lady" names which should never see the light of day ever again
  3. A sister for Nigel

I think I'm getting a bit too into this- I just searched for my middle name as well :o Not so good- it's dated apparently, which I probably agree with. I much prefer it with an -a on the end :)

Haha, I just searched my name and there are 1000 mentions, but not one of them are about names!

It would appear that a place with my name is very popular for camping, but not for naming DD's Grin

I've just done a search and it actually appears a lot more than I thought... people either love or hate it... no-one ever seems to pick it though.

It also appears a lot on the contraceptive/health thread as people mis-spell the name of their pill. :o (That's one reason some people don't like it.)

Personally I love it!
