Has anyone any ideas of strong/unusual English names for boys?

Thaddeus (not sure of the spelling).

I would have thought you'd llike unusual names because you called your son Jolyon!
Thanks anyway busybee1983

Still looking for suggestions if anyone has any new ones. Don't know why but we just cannot decide on one. We both like unusual names but not too unusual. This is a hard decision!

How about Harcus, named after the WW2 war hero, who then emigrated to Canada and had a mountain named after him - Harcus Strachan.

Arlo is lovely, really underused.

ONS names

Renaissance227 · 05/08/2011 11:17

Thanks for that!
Where do I find the ONS statistics?

Uther
Ambrose (origin name Ambrosius is Greek, so not sure if this in English enough for you)

evamummy · 05/08/2011 10:53

Have a look at the ONS statistics from last year. There is a list with ALL boys name given last year (well, all those used at least twice). If you look beyond the top 100 or even top 250 you'll find some lovely underused names. There are around 5,000 to choose from Smile.

I like Arlo and Quentin but they seem to be getting more popular.

Renaissance227 · 05/08/2011 10:34

There are some good names here. Thank you.
Still haven't agreed on one yet though.
Any more suggestions? Slightly more unusual (but not silly) names?

Going through cousins/uncles/father/in laws etc, I get the following list:

Thomas
John
Iain
Nicholas
Miles
William
Andrew
Cornelius (ny grandad, not really that serious a suggestion!)
Neil
Joseph
Matthew
Alexander
Kenneth
Daniel
Oliver
Peter
Christopher

Not that unusual (Cornelius excepted) but certainly strong names.

Renaissance227 · 03/08/2011 16:30

John - Too popular and already three in the family
Arlo - Not bad, so I'll put to my DP tonight!
Stanley - Stan?! No
Seth - No, no, no
Reuben - DP doesn't like this one, so it's out!
Oscar - Not keen
Alexander - My DP's name and we both don't want an Alexander junior situation!

Thank you.
