Curiosity got the better of me, and I've paid 23p to the scotlandspeople site for a breakdown of recent Aeneas's. Only 5 had Aeneas as their first name between 1990-2009 in Scotland; the others were middle names.

All of them had very traditional, safe names as their other name; John, James, David, Adam, Michael etc.

crystalglasses · 04/08/2011 12:56

atticus - attic = nickname 'lofty'?

CoteDAzur · 04/08/2011 12:53

Arguably, that is the one name that would be more cruel than Aeneas for a boy.

effingwotnots · 02/08/2011 20:00

What about anais?

CoteDAzur · 02/08/2011 19:56

I bet they are kicking themselves now.

AberdeenAngusina · 02/08/2011 17:11

According to Scotlandspeople website, there have been 25 boys whose names have included Aeneas born in Scotland since 1990. It doesn't say how many of those were first names, and how many were middle names.

So, 25 sets of parents who didn't make the Aeneas = anus connection.

BalloonSlayer · 02/08/2011 16:19

I've just looked it up, CalamityKate and you're right . . . many apologies!

I wonder where I read that he was called Aeneas? What a shame - I thought the people who wrote the show were doing a bit of clever irony there. Grin

Hope DH doesn't look at the Internet History and wonder why I am googling the Dukes of Hazzard. Blush

Oakmaiden · 02/08/2011 15:42

My Mum wanted me to call my daughter Clytemnestra. She thought "Clytie" would make a good nickname. When I said I thought the child would be mocked about her name, she said "Oh, I don't think so, dear. I can't see anything they would be able to make out of the name Clytie".

ThatllDoPig · 02/08/2011 15:38

Definately too anus like. IMO

CalamityKate · 02/08/2011 15:37

BalloonSlayer he was actually called Enos.

WeDONTneedanotherhero · 02/08/2011 15:18

Aeneas has definately been scrapped.

Do you remember the Dukes Of Hazzard?

The monumentally gormless young police officer was called Aeneas. I was surprised when I found that out. I always thought he was called Eeenis.

ShoutyHamster · 02/08/2011 14:41

Yeah... 'the gods made me do it' Hmm

If only poor Dido had read 'Not Just Friends' by Shirley Glass...

Penthesileia · 02/08/2011 13:58

Hee hee. I'd forgotten about Casio calculators.

Penthesileia · 02/08/2011 13:57

Trouble with Classical names is the men are - mostly - homicidal maniacs, and the women were - frequently - rape victims... Hmm

WeDONTneedanotherhero · 02/08/2011 13:57

Cassius reminds me of a calculator Grin

Grin @ "jumped-up lothario. Yes, poor old Dildo Dido.

Penthesileia · 02/08/2011 13:55

Atticus is nice, and has good 20thC connotations wrt "To Kill a Mockingbird".

Cassius is also a good name, IMO.

I wouldn't go for Tiberius, as Tacitus has rather ruined his reputation, and by the end of his reign, things were not well in the imperial household...

ShoutyHamster · 02/08/2011 13:52

What! No. Aeneas was a little shit.

Land-nicker and jumped-up lothario.

Call him Hector :)

WeDONTneedanotherhero · 02/08/2011 13:47

Historical Penthesileia, thank you for the link.

It shows you how innocent I am Kate Grin.

We also like Atticus and Tiberius.

I am getting into this thread... Grin

For Greek mythological names, borrow or buy a copy of "Apollodorus's" Library of Greek Mythology, which contains shortened versions of most Greek myths - lots of name inspiration there.

For Roman mythical names and some historical ones, browse through Wiseman's Myths of Rome.

You could check out this site too.

CalamityKate · 02/08/2011 13:38

It SERIOUSLY hadn't occurred to you that "Anus" would be the immediate and logical nickname??

Bless you Grin

Penthesileia · 02/08/2011 13:35

If Roman, what about Marcus? Marius? Titus? Gaius? Julius?

If you want a Greek name, do you want a mythical name or an 'historical" name?

Penthesileia · 02/08/2011 13:31

LOL @ non-cruel parents. Grin

Penthesileia · 02/08/2011 13:31

Also, Aeneas goes all mental and violent at the end of the Aeneid and brutally murder Turnus, the indigenous prince whose land Aeneas nicks to found Rome, so not exactly a role model. Grin
