Toby as a girls name

thecatisdead1 · 27/07/2011 23:12

Yeah okay I know. But it was used (a lot) as a girls name inthe 1920s-40s. And on it's own it is both a girls and boys name.

But will they then spend their life getting odd looks or will people just think it's a family nn that gets used by everyone?

But DP and I really like it.

So opinions?????

boys name, schmoys name!

You like the name? You use it! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

The way I see it, kids bully each other for anything & everything, better a name (which they didn't choose) than weight/appearance/class/aroma etc. Besides, they can decide to go by any other name they fancy.

Hence why DS has a more normal traditional middle name!

They might have spelt it wrong, in which case Denys is probably pretty peeved.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/07/2011 16:45

Terrible.

TobyLerone · 29/07/2011 16:40

Ah, fair enough. I just assumed.

Quenelle · 29/07/2011 16:39

It says Denis in the C4 website. I had to check because I thought my hearing was going.

TobyLerone · 29/07/2011 16:31

I'm thinking she was probably Denys.

Quenelle · 29/07/2011 16:18

There was a woman called Denis on Help My House is Falling Down last night.

ragged · 29/07/2011 16:15

NO

lalabaloo · 29/07/2011 16:14

It's brilliant! I went to school with a Toby who was a girl and she was one of the coolest people there, nobody ever batted an eyelid about her name. In fact, it was only as I got older I realised it was a boys name as well.

franke · 29/07/2011 00:03

Don't be silly!

Pancakeflipper · 29/07/2011 00:03

No.

Valpollicella · 28/07/2011 23:59

Awful either way, Razzle?

How so?

wehavenochairs · 28/07/2011 23:57

I can see it as a bizarre nn for a girl - one of the ones that isn't connected to actual first name, mainly because I can't think of a girls name it could be short for. But actually Toby on Birth cert? somehow - no. Sorry.

Unless as middle name, then a definate girls name as the first name. So for offical things they have a 'girls' name but everyone could call them their middle name - toby.

yousankmybattleship · 28/07/2011 23:43

No. Just no. Awful for a boy or girl.

mskatemc · 28/07/2011 23:42

If you both love it, why not?

ilovesprouts · 28/07/2011 16:22

TobyLerone · 28/07/2011 13:19

No, don't do it. How about Tori (Victoria)?

EightiesChick · 28/07/2011 08:32

No. Not aware of it being used prewar as girl's name but even if it was, don't think you should use it now.

Hevian · 28/07/2011 08:26
