our daughter is now 11 days old and we're worried we may have chosen the wrong name. Don't know what to do!
I think We have two options:

  • change it and face short term embarrassment/criticism
  • keep the name as it is, have courage in our convictions and learn to live with the fact that we may have made the wrong decision

So we chose the name Madeleine instead of Miranda. I'm now worried that Madeleine is a bit popular and also it's caused so many problems spelling-wise and it's only been a week. My DH couldn't even remember how to spell it when telling the health visitor! We decided that Madeleine was better for a newborn but when I have my sensible hat on I realise that babies/children grow into their names.

Wwyd? I'm feeling very stressed about it as well as hormonal and exhausted! Please help!

I think short-term embarrassment is worth the hassle if you really really prefer Miranda but on the other hand I don't think Madeleine is a bad name for a grown-up either, both are very pretty but elegant names, not twee or babyish.

Personally I prefer Miranda as it's our choice for DD1, but both names are lovely.

A week is nothing - go with what you and your husband would really like! I've posted on name threads as it took me a couple of months before I could articulate that I felt I had the wrong name and by then it was a bit too late - no 1 child already used to the name etc.

Definitely change now, people understand at a week, but less so later on!

(I like miranda, but really it needs to be what you and your husband are leaning towards!)

Methe · 14/03/2012 08:59

Miranda is much nicer :)

SoFarWeAreEqual · 14/03/2012 08:57

If you regret it (which it sounds like from your post), then change it.

Madeleine is an ok name and is quite popular, but Miranda has much more personality. I love it.

mammaaintraisinnofool · 14/03/2012 08:50

Madeleine is SO much nicer than Miranda. Don't change it. Just get Dad to write it down a few times until he remembers how to spell it?

PlumPeridot · 14/03/2012 01:19

Madeleine is lovely.

eurycantha · 27/07/2011 19:55

If you both are worried about this you should change now, both lovely names but you don`t want to be parents who want to change when their DD is 9 months old

scarlettlips · 27/07/2011 19:33

Madeleine, Madeleine and Madeleine again.....stunning name.

DH not able to spell it...blimey I couldn't' even remember my our name with a 2 weeks old baby, let alone spell it. Give yourself a brake. x

Congratulations, girls are the best!!! Grin

ps. haven't meant any Madeleine's under 5 at all.

pranma · 27/07/2011 18:18

Add Miranda as a middle name and use that.Madeleine Miranda sounds lovely and you can use either.

poppysweetie · 27/07/2011 18:11

I prefer Madeleine, really much prefer it. But I dont think thats what you are asking. If you really do prefer Miranda, change it now, its not too late. You can even change it if registered I think?
What is your partners view?

spanky2 · 27/07/2011 18:05

My Mum said Ethan (ds1) was the name of a cowboy and everyone thinks we named ds2 after Milo the Tweenie. Don't worry about what people think, go with the name you like.

WiiUnfit · 27/07/2011 17:59

If your feel your DD's name isn't right & prefer Miranda then change it, but I do love Madeleine! Don't beat yourself up about it.

Whelk · 27/07/2011 14:25

I went through exactly the same with dd2. I even tried calling her several other names (quietly Blush) during nappy changes. I really decided that her name wasn't right.

Thankfully dh didn't share my wobbling.
Now however I am so thankful that I didn't change her name and I absolutely love it. I think it just isn't really a baby name.
Madeleine is a fantastic name btw. Great taste!!

JanMorrow · 27/07/2011 11:43

There is no problem/shame in changing it if you want to.

I prefer Miranda but it's totally up to you!

AstridandMagnusMama · 26/07/2011 22:15

Miranda and Madeleine are both lovely names- whichever you decide they're great!

DialsMavis · 26/07/2011 22:13

I much prefer Madeleine but you should choose the name you prefer. Its early enough to change it definitely.

candleshoe · 26/07/2011 22:12

I love Miranda - change it!

Greenwing · 26/07/2011 22:11

My advice is to tell your closest family and friends that you are now not sure that Madeleine suits her so her name is not definite yet - this will give you some time and take the pressure off you.

Then think about it and discuss it. You have until six weeks to register the birth after all.

I cried only a day or two after my DS2 was born and said I didn't like his name. DH said, a little reluctantly but meaning it, that we could change it - I said, 'No' because we had already told everybody ... and 17 years later I still bitterly regret it and am upset by his horrible name! So sad.

You may well choose Madeleine (beautiful name btw) but give yourself more to decide so that you can be happy about your decision in future. Miranda is pretty too - more unusual and a lovely meaning.

levantine · 26/07/2011 22:09

I prefer Miranda too, but that really is irrelevant, you must change if it is what you prefer, no one will remember this time next year.

Madeleine.. If you can handle her being called Maddy, which she will be.

Don't worry your DH: I spelt my own name wrong on the wedding register.

I think Madeleine is lovely. When i hear Miranda, I think of the comedienne but if you really think you have chosen the wrong name , change it. Have you registered her, i can't remember how long you have in the UK.

cantpooinpeace · 26/07/2011 21:55

love Miranda - unusual, feminine......loads of Madys out there x

ThePrincessRoyalFiggyrolls · 26/07/2011 21:48

Don't worry, they are both lovely and I wanted to let you know that I still have to check ds's birth certificate to see how I spelt his middle name Blush
