Crisis! Name wobble-baby 11 days old. Please help!

our daughter is now 11 days old and we're worried we may have chosen the wrong name. Don't know what to do!
I think We have two options:

  • change it and face short term embarrassment/criticism
  • keep the name as it is, have courage in our convictions and learn to live with the fact that we may have made the wrong decision

So we chose the name Madeleine instead of Miranda. I'm now worried that Madeleine is a bit popular and also it's caused so many problems spelling-wise and it's only been a week. My DH couldn't even remember how to spell it when telling the health visitor! We decided that Madeleine was better for a newborn but when I have my sensible hat on I realise that babies/children grow into their names.

Wwyd? I'm feeling very stressed about it as well as hormonal and exhausted! Please help!

I remember a friend changed their baby name at over a week. We had a little giggle then that was it. It's def not too late to change.

havalina1 · 21/04/2016 12:21

Bendy, Yep I have no idea how the original resurrection occurs either Smile maybe through using Search in the app? I dunno!

mrsschu · 20/04/2016 09:23

OMG didn't spot it was a zombie thread and I'm usually good at spotting them Shock! How do they get dug out again?? It is a little bit funny though that some people get soooooo annoyed about zombie threads Smile.

1horatio · 20/04/2016 09:04

ooops!! Blush
sry! But at least I now realised how much I realy like the name Miranda and bumped it up on my list.... Grin

1horatio · 20/04/2016 09:02

I think you should go with the name you love.

If that requires changing the name then go for it. You could also tell people that she "just isn't a Madeleine" or something, I think most people will understand. You are going to use and hear her name very often and I was told that babyname regrets can be fairly awful.
I don't think that the reaction of other people should matter, what should matter is which name you want for your daughter.

I personally prefer Miranda. It's pretty, plucky and still unusual, I like that it's feminine but not frilly. Plus Miranda means "admirable, wonderful". It's also on my name list, so I am most likely really biased here....

But Madeleine is also sweet & pretty and some people may love the biblical connection.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 20/04/2016 07:58

But how do they end up on an ages old thread anyway? Confused gotta delve pretty deep to find a thread from 5 years ago. Anyway! Really has no effect on my life I was clearly just swept up in the Zombie outrage yesterday 😂

havalina1 · 20/04/2016 07:36

Bendy, probably because there are no images or warnings visible if you're viewing via the mumsnet app. It appears just like any other thread with current posts.

I do have a lovely image of piss boiling now though.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 19/04/2016 12:50

I am loath to add to the zombie resurrectiness but it boils my piss. There is a MASSIVE FUCKOFF NOTICE and even a cartoon of a zombie, warning the resurrecter that it's a zombie thread. Why do people do it???? Angry

LadyAntonella · 19/04/2016 12:15

Grr Zombie thread! How annoying.

LadyAntonella · 19/04/2016 12:14

It sounds like you both prefer Miranda so I would probably change it now before it becomes too hard to unlearn her name iyswim.

FWIW I like Miranda better too, but they're both nice names.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 19/04/2016 11:51
Grin Borh lovely names, whichever she ended up with.
GoldPlatedBacon · 19/04/2016 11:46

This is ancient! How do these threads get resurrected?!

havalina1 · 19/04/2016 06:49

Ha yes!

kelda · 19/04/2016 06:23

Little Miranda/Madeleine will be nearly five years old.

mrsschu · 19/04/2016 06:20

Madeleine is lovely, I don't like Miranda but it sounds like you prefer it. I would change it if you're very unsure. Friends of ours did this recently when their baby was a couple of weeks old and yes it seemed a little strange at first but now most people have forgotten that the baby was called anything else to begin with.

Lillipuddlian · 18/04/2016 20:58

that is so sad.... I changed all of my baby's names, lol, I'm very indecisive. I don't care what people think, I pushed them out and I don't want to live with regret. Thank you for sharing. I get a lot of flak about my naming wobbles.

nizlopi · 17/03/2012 09:11

Keep Madeleine in my opinion

zumm · 16/03/2012 18:48

Oh yeh, dur, I hope she comes back and lets us know!

I much prefer Madeleine to Miranda, its so much nicer a name! I'd say Miranda is much more used than Madeleine too - I know no little Madeleines but 3 Mirandas. Maddy is a lovely nn too. But your call.

I'd give it more than 11 days, you might just be a bit up in the air from the whole having a baby! I agree with zumm, often the issue isn't really the name. If its not right though, change it, screw what other people think! People will accept it, and if they don't, and are rude enough to comment, then their opinion is probably not worth much anyway!

If you're sure, change it definitely. You could also change it unofficially or just use it at home for a few weeks, and if you realise you didn;t want to change it, change it back and say 'No, we never changed her name, what are you talking about?'

My DP can't spell my name half the time, the poor dear has only had a week, give him a chance!

SpangledPandemonium · 14/03/2012 21:17

It also depends where you are. Not loads of Madeleines around here. Could pick Miranda and find lots of them turning up! It seems to work out that way. Go for it if you want to change it though. Better now than regret it

Badgerina · 14/03/2012 21:01

If the only thing holding you back from changing it is the embarrassment, I say CHANGE IT! I like both names, but agree that Miranda is more unusual. Can you be lighthearted about the name-change faff? I bet in a year or so, you'll just laugh about it Smile

MeconiumHappens · 14/03/2012 20:47

Change it. Loads of people do, and who cares what other people think. Just tell them you got to know her and she suits it better. Be happy in your long ter choice or regret it! xx

zumm · 14/03/2012 13:09

OP - I had wobbles too - I think they tend to be about issues other than the name - (such as the huge responsibility or something about worrying about others' opinions of you/the child).
Both names are equally delightful. FWIW, I'd stick with Madeleine. And Maddy is a cool nickname too - reminds me of a chic American (was this a character from Moonlighting perchance?)
Good luck to you.

BelleStar · 14/03/2012 10:22

Madeleine is a beautiful name. I prefer it to Miranda, but it's your call! Spelling shmelling...that doesn't really matter - speaks someone who has always had to spell their name.

Also, don't worry about dh forgetting the spelling. My first outing with my dd someone asked me her name and I couldn't remember! Such a panic! Dh jumped to my rescue. I cried, obviously!
