Does it matter if initials spell out a word?

Only have one first name that we both like. Want middle name to be from the family. Only one that sounds right leaves the 3 initials spelling out a word. Does that matter?

I've never ever heard anyone taking the piss out of someone for their initials. I don't even remember knowing the initials of anyone I went to school with.

trixymalixy · 02/08/2011 09:22

BRA for a boy is definitely not ok!!

DS has 2 middle names because of a similar issue.

notso · 02/08/2011 09:16

I would go with two middle names, I have two and you do get the greedy/mouthful comments but it's never bothered me.

Our first girls name choice for DC3 gave the initials MOFO, didn't think anything of it until my Sister pointed it out, luckily we had a DS anyway.

I went to school with boy who was called BJ as his given name and no-one ever called him Blow Job, his school nickname was Beej.
There was an NOB Edwards who got NOB ED though.

Eskarina · 02/08/2011 08:48

I do think that initials BRA for a boy would be a bit much for a boy.

And of course if child were to be a DD then there's the potential for changing name on marriage to give an unfortunate set of initials. I'm F. A. Surname. There was potential for being FAT, FAG, FAX. Fortunately DH has an unoffensive surname initial Grin

Muckyhighchair · 31/07/2011 19:46

Dp has MAP as his

And of course he got called map at school

I'd go for 2 middle names.

We all have 2 in my family and it's fine, I dropped the first middle one on non official paperwork and just keep using the second, but I'm glad I was given the choice.

bruffin · 31/07/2011 19:25

My DD is RMW but if she uses her nickname it is BMW, which she is rather pleased with.

MsChanandlerBong · 31/07/2011 19:05

OP - you say you want to avoid 2 middle names... but surely 2 middle names is better than BRA or BJ type initials?
So I back up the suggestions of BRJA.

I tend not to get too fixated on initials, but when they spell out something rude (or potentially rude) I think you would be silly not to seriously consider other options.

vickibee · 30/07/2011 16:56

b4 i got married my initials were VD how unfortunate and the result of a lot of bullying at school

A1980 · 30/07/2011 16:54

I know a FAG and an ASS.

The FAG is female, the ASS is male.

Poor kid had ASS embroidered on his towels. Oops.

Inspirachion · 27/07/2011 14:46

I do wonder when a middle initial is a vowel I am RAC fine, ds MAC not too bad DD REC not so sure about that one wish I had considered before we chose it though it's not a word in itself it's not an attractive syllable keep thinking rectum - doh Blush

BRA not the best to be honest definitely worth swapping round if possible Wink

glittershoes · 27/07/2011 14:27

I'd avoid BRA and BJA for the reasons about but could you perhaps combine and have BRJA?

Or keep the R or J and add in another middle name, maybe from your side of the family?

So Ben Robert William Anderson or Ben Charles Joseph Anderson (guessing at names obviously).

That way you get the first name, the family middle name, an additional middle name and no unfortunate initials!

seeker · 27/07/2011 14:19

Can I just ask, is anyone who thinks that BRA is OK as a set of initials the parent of an 8/9/10 year old boy?

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 27/07/2011 13:13

This was something we had to be careful of. We have a double barrelled last name (E-E) so we couldn't have any names beginning with P or W (Pee or Wee)

Kids can be cruel.

Kveta · 27/07/2011 12:51

I should add, my sister's initials were something like DVR, and she was nicknamed DVD throughout school - not an obvious link, but some boys in her class discovered it and exploited it. So sometimes, you can't win - but it's obviously best to avoid ridiculous initials if you can!! (we had a name for a girl which would have given her the initials KKK, which would have been very bad indeed!!).

Olivesandfeta · 27/07/2011 12:49

My dds are LEB and DEB :)
I think BRA is fine, don't remember ever ribbing someone because of initials.

Mibby · 27/07/2011 12:28

Our first choice of names for DD would have left her with ASS or SAS? Neither is good although one is clearly worse! I think BRA is a bad idea. We went through various middle names to end up with ALS

down2earthwithabump · 27/07/2011 11:32

DD initials ABO, we deliberately left out an S so she didn't have her first ASBO Blush at birth (though we were part tempted too as I had been working in partnership with the criminal justice system Wink ). I think initials do need to be thought through... it is not just through primary school that being made fun of happens... it is in wedding speeches, in an office etc.
But maybe adding an initial is the answer.

My best friend was pregnant with a dd and was going to use the middle name Allison after her sister. Last name started with G. We had lots of fun thinking of names...my favorite was Violet Allison G but she said no. :o

Her DD's initials ended up being GAG.

seeker · 27/07/2011 08:05

Primary school children are always experimenting with their names, seeing what they sound like backwards and so on. BRA would be a disaster. honestly.
Probably the only time you regularly use your full name is in Primary school!

iWILLdothis · 27/07/2011 07:58

thanks for all the replies. I think T as a middle name is also out, although I like Thomas/Tom for a middle name..... as Ben is the 1st name we want, don't want him getting letters addressed to Mr Ben T. Anderson*
(*changed surname)

My brothers name is *Benjamin and his initials are BEN he was told of constantly at school for writing his name on work instead of his initials he got fed up of pointing out they were his initials.

Mum and dad say they didn't even realise for a long time after he was born.

Initials are used quite a bit at school, all of DD's work is initialed when it's sent home

*changed the name so not to identify myself.

BikeRunSki · 26/07/2011 18:37

My uncle was going to be ARM, but GPs thought that was a bit silly, so they changed him to RAM Hmm.

JoleneTheNunsnetter · 26/07/2011 18:29

As long as it's not cunt you'll be fine.

Continuum · 26/07/2011 16:51

There are some obvious ones it would be too cruel to inflict, BRA would be one of those.

I am having a bit of a similar issue in that the initials of our next child would be the same as the shortened form of his name, this isn't it, but for example, Dan, and his initials spell out DAN. Is that too much, I really really love the middle name too.
