Which names are would you consider 'too posh/try-hard/odd' to be used?

Having seen a few names pop up which, when read out to my office colleagues, have caused great hilarity, I was wondering which names poeple on MN generally consider too posh/try hard/odd to be passed off in RL. I absolutely love Arabella but have been told that DH and I aren't posh enough to use it :( Ditto Lucinda.

I have to admit I did laugh at Mungo. Sorry to any Mungos/parents of Mungos out there!

Yes, Red ! My son is Samuel but always gets Sam and we've had the odd "dog's name" comment. Really?! Sam?

oh and when I lived at home we had a dog called Sam and a cat called Oscar. They're just names, people!

And..there was a post earlier with Timothy on it!!!! wtf is wrong with Timothy?? Is Tim not a really common name?

Plus, Rex is nice. I like it. Like Max but not so popular. My dogs growing up were Hannah, Maggie, Lucy, Little Anne, Emma, and Jack. Right now my parents have Emmett and Gabby. It's not like lockets named her son Fluffy or something! Hmm

I have a Samuel. Common?

Wow I'm shocked at some of the posts on this thread! lockets I love Rex it's an awesome name I've been trying to get my DH to agree to for some time. We've vetoed Ben off our list along with Jess as I cannot see these as anything but dog names....it's all down to your families choice of pet names isn't it? I've never met a dog called Rex.
Hmm Did have a dog called Misty once and now know a girl called Misty..... I would never be so rude as to tell her it's a dogs name and now it seems completely normal. [wanders off to add half the names on here to her list....] Grin

I did comment above how unconsidered I think this thread is (both my sons names have been criticised). It has declined further since I commented. It was one thing to say that you don't like a name, but to keep on making fun of a persons choice is just bullying.

We all have different tastes but I would rather choice a "marmite" name and be criticised by a few than a really popular name.

However I would never say hurtful repeatedly spiteful comments.

All of my kids names have been slagged of on mumsnet. I have a ciaran, shannon, elinor (ellie) and a jessica. Chav names apparantly

Rex is lovely, very regal, and i also love rufus, so i really dont think there is anything wrong with a human-canine cross over!

i wouldnt be fussed if someone said 'oh thats a dogs name', as the split doesnt make much sense to me and doesn;t seem much of an insult... its the thought behind it that is the rude bit i.e. why say something deliberately trying to be rude?!

thinking of which, why are lots of 'dogs' names coming back into vogue... isn't that a bit cat-ist? i think in the next 10 yrs we'll have a swing back to kitty, tiger, midnight, garfield, lucky and sheba...

hum, thinking about it, i love some of those names!

Kay is beautiful,though I picture a boy when I hear it,because of The Snow Queen,but it's a lovely girl's name too.

I can be overly honest re names,but this is ridiculous. This seems to be about being as unpleasant as possible,and not the name,which if you ask me is a gorgeous and strong name that works beautifully for a baby,toddler,child,teen and man.

I'll admit that I didn't really like it before,until I met one, a lovely seven year old Rex who suited it perfectly,now it's one of my favourites,and most definitely a people name imho.I've yet to meet a canine version.

Rex Harrison was all suave and gentlemanly, but had the most tempestuous, hot, sexy romance with Kay Kendall... one of the truly great loves, it was amazing... am I the only one who saw my fair lady and thought he was a bit phwoar?

I have tried to convince DH that Kay is due for a revival (would work v well with long surname too) but he's not convinced yet.
