Is Lyra May a good girls name?

I just spotted Lyra on another thread, and it suddenly reminded me of the Philip Pullman books....and I thought...is that such a crazy name...? We are having difficulties choosing a girls name, (May as the second name is a given, but the first name is causing probs) and in my hormonal state this is seeming quite nice....

what you all think?

I don't like it - it's not that easy to pronounce, ie Lie-ra becomes Liar-ra. The point was made in the books that Lyra's name suited her as she was such a good liar.

Grin @ piglet

Yes but Futurama is somewhat dated now, I don't think it's being made anymore? I also like L names, DS is a Lucas but our shortlist of girl's names included Lydia, Lyla, Leila, Layla, Lola .etc Grin

muminthemiddle · 25/07/2011 11:23

Lyra May sounds very good. Don't know any other Lyras either.

Ephiny · 25/07/2011 11:16

I don't think it's a 'crazy' name, but don't think it's very nice either (same goes for Myra). Have never met anyone with it in real life, though maybe it's starting to get popular because of those children's books?

I like L names generally - but Leila or Lara would be nicer in my opinion. Or even Laura, though this now feels very dated to me having been so popular when I was young!

redheadbedhead · 25/07/2011 11:11

say it how you feel it everlong!!!! jesus... Grin

and Leela is the one eyed woman out of Futurama, so that's out!!

Just found out my friends cat is called Lyra so it's put me off a little bit.... might just give up until I know what sex the piglet is...

I also read Lycra - sorry!

Lyra isn't for me I'm afraid. Have you considered Lyla or Lila / Leela?

As for May as a middle name, I think it is rapidly becoming the 'Louise' of the 90s (my middle name!) but I can't say it's ever done me any harm having such a 'common' middle name for my age group.

I have a 20 month old Lyra Emily and it really suits her, she is such a funny little kid and she calls herself LyLy. Most people are very complementary on her name. No-one has ever said it is horrible to my face! But you can tell if people think it's odd because you get 'Oh...That's unusual'. I've met one other Lyra (on holiday) and seen 2 in magazines so there are at least 4 little Lyra's running around, and they have all been little blond girls. You should definately use it, I'm so glad I did, and I think it's lovelywith Mae/May.

redheadbedhead · 23/07/2011 05:31

ooooooh Ivy Tabitha..... what a pretty name.....

wrigglerstea · 22/07/2011 22:48

I think it is absolutely lovely and the stresses go just right that have 2 syllables. And it doesn't even slightly relate to Myra.

pestroid · 22/07/2011 22:27

Lyra is to close to Myra imo

Pelvicflooragogo · 22/07/2011 21:54

Love it! Considered Lyra and May for ours. Went with Ivy Tabitha!

redheadbedhead · 22/07/2011 20:26

Grin mamagool love your post!!

yomellomo our surname is 2 syllables as well, so I think that would be 2-syllable-overkill.... but thanks for the suggestion!

Interesting that you know a Lyra bebe - I wonder how many there are out there....? will have a look at popular names lists.... like the idea of having a slightly unusual name and not one that everyone else has Smile

yomellamoHelly · 22/07/2011 20:22

Love Lyra. But doesn't go with May. You need 2 syllables or more I think.

mamaGool · 22/07/2011 20:20

I love Lyra, but i don't think you should use it because I want to keep it for my as yet unconceived daughter I fear it could be VERY popular in a few years time...

bebejones · 22/07/2011 20:18

I know a 2 year old Lyra & she is the most adorable little girl. I think the name is beautiful & sounds really nice with May (although I do know lots of little girls with May/Mae as a middle name, but as a middle name that's not really a problem). :)

redheadbedhead · 22/07/2011 20:17

minicorrect just texted my DH the name as an idea and he's not retching or anything, so I may be on to a winner! Wink yay!

thanks youwiththeface but I meant my husbands first name is Lawrence!Blush sorry I wasn't clear!!

minicorrect · 22/07/2011 20:10

Might have been my thread you saw and I love Lyra - also from the Pullman trilogy. And I think it sounds lovely with May. Even DP agrees and can't be persuaded on Lyra!

YouWithTheFace · 22/07/2011 20:05

Lyra May Lawrence sounds lovely, I think :) I don't know any Mays, but I suspect it'll start coming into fashion again now that Maisies and Mabels are popping up everywhere.

plonker · 22/07/2011 20:04

No, it's a naughty girls name.

(Sorry, bad joke I know, but I couldn't resist Wink )

redheadbedhead · 22/07/2011 19:59

I guess the other alternative is a double-barreled first name, Lyra-May. Or is that too much like the Waltons? I think I prefer it separated....

is it passe nowadays??? blimey. i don't know anyone with that middle name apart from myself!
