Hindu/Indian but also Westernised boys name

My partner is Indian and I am British and are expecting our first baby boy in a few weeks. His sister has come up with the only name so far that we can agree on; Aayan. As much as I like it I'm not feeling that it's 'the one'. So any suggestions please ladies, it doesn't have to be 100% Indian but I would like it to have some connection if possible. And neither do I want a completley British name such as James etc. We both want something unusual without it being weird...

The majority of Indian/Hindu names originate from Sanskrit which is arguably theoldest language in the world. It's silly to say that any of these names are westernized. They are all of purely Sanskrit/eastern origin although many have alternative spellings.

Briefly went out with a Mohan as a teenager, he was mostly called Mo at the time.

Again a HUGE thank you, my mind is boggling with all the choices. I'm thinking of getting a Hindu translation book so I can get the true meanings and also pick a meaning that is close to us... If such a book exists please do tel. I have Wikipedia searched the name Rafi and didn't realise there were so many connections with Indian/Pakistan. And I was also told that Rafiki means friends in swahili- language spoken in Kenya. And DP mother is from Kenya. So I might have a keeper.

I gave all my sons middle names that were Indian as that's my side of the family - to add some balance to them not having my surname. They are Hari, Arun and the least English-sounding one - Indra - because there was a rainbow on the morning he was born - and that is the god with a rainbow as his bow so I liked that. I was conscious of teasing at school in South London in the late 70s for those kids that had very 'different' names so also wanted to stick to those that sound more English - but let's hope those narrow minded days are gone.

Another vote for Kiran. I have a Ciaran, and my Irish HV told me she and her Indian husband called their son Ciaran because Kiran also means "sunbeam" in Hindi!

The frankly amazing George Harrison called his son Dhani - prounounced 'Danny' but also means the 6th and 7th notes of the Indian musical scale (apparently - thank you wikipedia!).

Always loved the name.

Wow thank you for all your help ladies, have really given us something to think about. We've just had Raffy/Rafi thrown into the mix which i believe is Arabic origin? But is quite sweet sounding. My DP has also suggested Dylan and a few others listed. I will go over them tonight with him and will cone back with the outcome. Girls names seem so much easier!

Seth - which is an Indian second name, as in Vikram Seth etc.

called there son Jaiesh but he is always known as Jai. Pronounced Jay.
