.....our names are now officially sorted..........I think.

I did have a wobble earlier today due to an article being in a paper, but I think we're happy

Girl - Eidith Lily (Eidi for short)
Boy - Seth Lucas

I'm hoping that I should be safe from other children in the class having the same name........???

The spelling doesnt make sense though 'ei' make an eye sounds, not an eee.

fivegomadindorset · 08/07/2011 20:36

DD is Edith/Edie
Sorry your DD will forever have to explain the spelling if you do it differently, but if that is what you want then hey ho.

woollyideas · 08/07/2011 20:34

I'm with all the other people who think Eidith is just a pretentious daft way of spelling Edith. Why the need to be so 'unusual'? Edith is a lovely name, as is its shortened version (usually spelt Edy). Why saddle the poor child with a name that will constantly be misspelt and mispronounced just to be different? I mean, what IS the point?

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion · 08/07/2011 20:33

I'm not bothered about the annoyance factor for 'everyone' though, anyone she would know would know how its spelt, anyone that doesn't know her then I'm not bothered about. I accept the comments re her being annoyed by it though which are fair and I'll have to speak to DH about it. I do genuinly think there are names and spelling that are weirder though.

I don't think you can put Edith in the same camp as Ethel, Enid or Edna - they will always be grim!

FellatioNelson · 08/07/2011 20:30

I love the name Edith, I think it's beautiful - really classy. However:

  1. when I first read your OP I didn't even realise the Eidith or Eidi was supposed to be the same as Edith and Edie. I had no idea how to pronounce it and thought it was some complicated gaelic name, like Aoife, or Siobhan!

  2. You will spend your life having to correct the spelling, put up with everyone getting it wrong, and having to pronounce it for people, who will then look bewildered when they realise it is just Edith.

Don't mess with spellings. Simplicity is always best. You will regret putting that superfluous 'i' in forever more, and a few years down the line you'll feel a bit silly about it.

Seth also very nice BTW. I do think both of them will become increasing popular (if not common exactly) in the next few years though.

MugglesandLuna · 08/07/2011 20:30

People will call her eyedith. It looks like a typo.

I know a lovely little girl called Edith, she gets called Edie and its a very pretty name.

ShoutyHamster · 08/07/2011 20:26

Eidith sounds like it should be Heidi with the H dropped - 'Ello 'Eidi !!

Sorry! If it's pronounced Edith SPELL IT EDITH. Your DD will thank you for it! Edith is lovely.

Seth very nice. I wouldn't describe it as popular.

SloganLogan · 08/07/2011 20:25

Lovely names :) But I'd use the Edith spelling to avoid having to constantly correct Eye-dee and Eye-dith.

deemented · 08/07/2011 20:22

Not so keen on Eidith, but love Seth.

Would like Seth for this one if it's a boy, but can't as i already have a Tate and people would think we're Emmerdale fans Grin

PaisleyLeaf · 08/07/2011 20:21

I would say 'eye' dith with that spelling.

It's funny, I worked in a nursing home about 20 yrs ago and we used to talk about the name fashions. Just couldn't imagine a baby called Edith/Ethel/Enid etc at the time ....and here we are, they've come round again.

SherlockHolmes · 08/07/2011 20:20

Eidi surely rhymes with Heidi? Spell it properly and it will be lovely. Made up spellings are judged harshly I think you'll find. And not just on MN.

Rhubarbgarden · 08/07/2011 20:19

Edith is a beautiful name.

razzlebathbone · 08/07/2011 20:18

I have an Edie. Never met another or an Edith.

The Eidith/Eidi spelling just looks stupid. Sorry.

littlemisslozza · 08/07/2011 20:16

I like them both but my first thought about 'Eidith' was that it was pronounced 'Eye-dith' and therefore 'Eidi' would be like Heidi but without the H. I imagine that a lot of people would also assume that so personally if you want to call her Edith I would spell it the traditional way.

I know two baby Seths but it's not ridiculously popular, just growing in popularity compared to recent years.

elah11 · 08/07/2011 20:15

Both Seth and Edith are lovely but Eidith just looks made up, sorry!! People will think you didnt know how to spell it properly when you named her Hmm

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 08/07/2011 20:15

Seth here too he's 3.

Agree with the spelling and pronunication issues you really will be making life difficult for her. Love Edith though!

SwearyMary · 08/07/2011 20:12

What do you mean safe? For goodness sake call your children what you like but please do consider confusing spellings. Not so much the correction that it will take but the annoyance factor for everyone.

Eidith is Eyedith. Eidi is Eyedee.

catsareevil · 08/07/2011 20:12

If you really want to be sure that there wont be any children with the same name at school then I think that you need to look for something more unusual. I think that Edith is fairly unusual, but givent the trend in baby names I expect that it will become popular, and you might find that someone else will have had the same idea as you (ie trying to go for something a little unusual, but within the trend, if that makes sense)

Catsu · 08/07/2011 20:12

Love edith and Seth but eidith def looks odd. If I saw it I'd call her eye-dith
much prefer edith. Esp if you've got ei in your surname too!

Tw1nkle · 08/07/2011 20:11

I love the name Seth - I hope it doesn't get too popular, as I'd love it if we ever have a boy!!!

My DD is called 'Sienna' - that was about 125th on the list - there are 3 at the same nursery!!!

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion · 08/07/2011 20:09

Really whether they are popular I guess - I thought I was quite safe but 2 Seth's in one toddler group is quite a big surprise!! Shock :(

NurseSunshine · 08/07/2011 20:09

IMO Eidith looks like EYEdith and Eidi looks like EYEdi. Just spell it properly!

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion · 08/07/2011 20:07

Thisisyesterday - you think Eidith/Edith is popular too - really??

Don't get me wrong, I don't want a crazy name like 'apple' or something celeb like, but after being one of at least 3 people of the same name in my class when I was at school, I really don't want to end up with a name where there's another one in the class.
