I don't normally bitch about names, but this one really took my breath away

this little girl is called...... Phalia

pronounced "failure"

[struck dumb]

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Not a Pakistani name, as far as I know. But DO have a friend who has a half chinese step sister with this name.

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2011 19:20

Well, it is a bit of a cross between phallic and genitalia.

Brender, not Brenda, LaVitaBellissima? The youngest Brenda is know is 24.

superjobeespecs · 06/07/2011 19:16

sounds phallic to me Shock imagine naming your kid after a cock!!

Hulababy · 06/07/2011 19:04

I would have assumed Fal-ia or Fay-lia

But if you say the last one quickish then yes, it does sound like failure.

LaVitaBellissima · 06/07/2011 18:57

I came across a Brender this week Shock

allhailtheaubergine · 06/07/2011 18:39

I would have assumed it was pronounced 'FAL-ia' which sounds a bit phallic. Or maybe 'FAR-lia'. But then I~ pronounce Dahlia 'DAR-lia' too.

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2011 18:32

Recently I've come across little girls called Terra (Terror Hmm) and Candy-Lou (who was wearing a fetching pair of hoop earnings), but her mother was totally lovely.

NotJoiningIn · 06/07/2011 18:28

At the swimming pool the other day there was a little girl called Alfresco.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 05/07/2011 22:56

Oh dear, some right odd names eh? Accents can really change a name, (even though I don't honestly get adding an R into names when it isn't in there lol).

CassandraD · 05/07/2011 19:51

My husband is a teacher and comes across some very interesting names...
Two sisters: Candydarling and Bunnylove
I feel sorry for their brother: Joe.

Rhubarbgarden · 05/07/2011 16:19

I met a baby Nia-Mia yesterday. Kept wanting to call her Near Miss.

barafundlecds · 05/07/2011 14:43

I think it's a name from Pakistan?

TryLikingClarity · 05/07/2011 14:06
Confused

It must be an accent thing, but I have an Ulster accent, so would pronounce 'failure' and emphasise the R sound, therefore I don't see Phalia as being pronounced in a similar way.

Phalia? Is that not just too close to being another term for penis? I suppose they might want it pronounced like "Fa-lia". Is still quite bad.

I am Shock at some of the other names mentioned!

mumonahottinroof · 05/07/2011 11:55

Anyone here read Antonia Forest?

Fifis25StottieCakes · 05/07/2011 11:44

my friend has stated when she has kids she is calling her dd Beyonce as there are non about. I seriously believe she will as well.

purplepidjin · 05/07/2011 11:38

I know twins called Karma and Chakra. No word of a lie.

Blackcoffeeandcigarettes · 05/07/2011 11:34

Tinkerbella. I shit you not. I know a baby Tinkerbella. Tink for short.

tammy234 · 05/07/2011 11:32

Agree - there are worse names than Phalia (also like Thalia).

YaMaYaMa · 05/07/2011 11:31

Haha 'peekaboui moon'! That's the first name that's ever me do an actual lol!

Is your friend a mad hippy? I feel like I might like her if she's prepared to call her child peekaboui moon Grin

Urban is just grim though, isnt it?

JanMorrow · 05/07/2011 11:27

I would assume it is pronounced Far-lee-a. Could be worse..

meditrina · 04/07/2011 22:20

I've never seen it before, and would rhyme it with Thalia. (But might, perhaps, think she was very overdue and they'd had non-stop hot curries to get her moving).

Fifis25StottieCakes · 04/07/2011 22:12

Im a Geordie and would pronounce it

Phalia - fal ley a
Falilure - fail ya

Must depend what accent you have and how you pronounce it.

Ive seen worse.

HerRoyalNotness · 04/07/2011 22:02

Well it's not bad. On the other hand, I give you........

Mc Cart ne y, girl

{spaces inserted in case they search}

cheesesarnie · 04/07/2011 21:59

i thought thalia was prounouced tar lia?am i being snobby?

squeak2392 · 04/07/2011 21:56

Yeah, I wouldn't have noticed 'Failure' either if you hadn't pointed it out!
I think Phalia's really pretty, but if that's how it's pn in some places, then I think that makes it a NO.
